GATE 2027 in Nagpur: Exam City, IIT Bombay Zone and Nearby Institutes

The official exam-city page has one entry, "Nagpur", under Maharashtra in the IIT Bombay zone. You choose the city; GATE chooses the centre inside it.

The district administration describes Nagpur as the winter capital of Maharashtra and a major centre of the Vidarbha region, with 14 talukas. None of those talukas has a separate exam-city name, and nor do Bhandara, Gondia, Yavatmal or Gadchiroli. If you are from one of them, your realistic picks are Nagpur and the other eastern Maharashtra names below.

GATE calls the list tentative. It may add or remove a city, and may allot one you did not choose. GATE 2027 has no centres outside India.

All six options have to come from one zone. The IIT Bombay zone covers 22 Maharashtra cities, seven in Gujarat and Goa, so a Nagpur student has plenty to choose from.

The closest same-zone names to Nagpur are Wardha, Chandrapur, Amravati and Akola. Further west come Nanded, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad) and Jalgaon. A practical form:

5. Akola
6. Pune or Mumbai - Thane, if you have somewhere to stay there

The last slot is worth some thought. If a job or internship will have you in Pune or Mumbai in February, move that city up the list. The Pune page and Mumbai page explain the entries on that side.

Nagpur is unusual. Cities on the list in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana that a Vidarbha student might call nearby fall into four different zones, and none can be combined with Nagpur:

Chhindwara and Balaghat are not on the list at all.

The trap is the student from Raipur, Jabalpur or Adilabad who studies at a Nagpur college and wants both home and hostel on one form. GATE will not accept that. Decide where you will be in February, then build all six choices in that zone. The Bhopal, Hyderabad and Warangal pages show the lists on those sides.

According to the important dates page, scrutiny-defect rectification closes on 3 November 2026 and the date of the paid data correction window is still TBA. Do not count on changing your cities before then.

The six exam days are 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, all weekends. The city allotment notification is due on 4 January 2027. Admit cards follow on a date still TBA, and the admit card carries your centre and reporting time.

The Nagpur district site lists several railway stations in the area, among them Nagpur Junction, Ajni, Itwari and Kalamna. That helps if GATE sends you to Wardha or Chandrapur and you go by train the evening before.

For a Nagpur centre, look it up the day your admit card appears and check the route from wherever you will sleep the night before. Aim to reach well before the reporting time.

If you are writing DA and CS together, the two-paper page says the second paper can be at a different centre in the same city. Take the printed admit card, the original photo ID entered in your application, and anything else the admit card asks for.

VNIT Nagpur is in the city, and its page lays out the GATE routes for DA and CSE candidates. IIT Bombay, in Mumbai, is the other Maharashtra institute with a GATEiit page.

Outside the state, pages worth reading include IIT Hyderabad, IIIT Hyderabad and NIT Warangal in Telangana, and IIT Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The institutes list has the rest.

Where you write GATE does not affect where you can apply. Pick the exam city for convenience and the institute for its programme.
