GATE 2027 in Chennai: Exam Cities, IIT Madras Zone Rules and Institutes
GATE 2027 in Chennai: Chennai North and Chennai South exam cities, IIT Madras zone back-ups, cities you cannot mix, and nearby institutes.
Updated 2 November 2026 · GATEiit Team
Chennai North and Chennai South
The official GATE 2027 list does not have a single "Chennai" entry. It splits the city into Chennai North and Chennai South, and both sit under Tamil Nadu in the IIT Madras zone. When you filled the form, these were two separate choices, so a Chennai student could use two of the six slots without leaving the city.
The list does not say which areas or colleges fall under North and which under South. Your actual centre address only appears on the admit card, so do not read the labels as a promise about which part of the city you will be sent to. Treat both as "somewhere in or around Chennai" until the admit card says otherwise.
The list is also marked tentative. GATE 2027 can add a city, remove one, or allot you a city that was not among your six options. That last point matters most in February, when you may find yourself travelling.
What the same-zone rule means from Chennai
The rule on the official exam-cities page is short: you choose six cities, and all six must be from the same GATE 2027 zone. For anyone in Chennai the natural zone is IIT Madras, and it happens to be a large one. It covers Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, part of Andhra Pradesh, part of Kerala and part of Telangana.
Back-ups in the IIT Madras zone, closest first
After Chennai North and Chennai South, the zone cities nearest the city are:
- Kanchipuram, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu
- Puducherry, and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu
- Tirupati, Chittoor and Nellore across the Andhra Pradesh border, which are in the IIT Madras zone too
- Krishnagiri, a longer trip but still in the zone
A typical Chennai set would be the two Chennai cities plus four from that list, ordered by how easily you can reach each one on an early February morning.
Nearby-looking cities you cannot combine
This is where people trip up. Several cities feel close to Chennai but belong to a different zone:
- Bengaluru North and Bengaluru South: IISc zone, along with Kolar and Chikkballapur on the Karnataka side.
- Hyderabad: IISc zone, even though Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam in Telangana are in the IIT Madras zone.
- Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam: IIT Kharagpur zone, while Guntur, Amaravati, Ongole and Nellore stay with IIT Madras.
- Palakkad: IISc zone, while Coimbatore and Pollachi in Tamil Nadu are IIT Madras.
Kerala is split too. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam and Aluva - Ernakulam are in the IIT Madras zone; Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kannur and Palakkad are in the IISc zone. If you study in Chennai but your family lives in Bengaluru or Kozhikode, you had to pick one zone for all six. You could not hedge across both.
The office that answers your exam-city questions
For most students the zone office and the organising institute are two different places. In Chennai they are the same. IIT Madras coordinates the zone and organises GATE 2027, so every query about your city, centre or admit card goes to one address:
IIT Madras, Chennai 600 036: helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in, 044-22578200.
The official site lists application-query hours as Monday to Friday, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Write from the email ID you registered with and quote your enrolment ID. Phone lines get busy around allotment and admit-card dates, so email gives you a written record.
One honest point on timing. Regular and extended registration and the special window for GATE 2027 closed in October 2026. The scrutiny-defect rectification window has been extended on the official dates page, most recently to 3 November 2026. The application data-correction window is listed as TBA. Watch the official site for it, and check there whether city choices can be changed in it before planning around that.
Planning the exam day from Chennai
The city allotment notification is due on 4 January 2027. That tells you which exam city you got. The admit card, whose download date is still TBA, gives the exact centre address and reporting time. Once you have the address, plan the trip that week and do not leave it for the night before.
Chennai Metro Rail's official site lists the Blue Line (Corridor 1) running from Wimco Nagar Depot to Chennai International Airport and the Green Line (Corridor 2) from Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central to St. Thomas Mount. If your centre is near one of those stations, check the operator's own timetable for first-train timings on your exam day, especially for a morning slot on a weekend. All six GATE 2027 exam dates fall on a Saturday or Sunday.
If you were allotted Kanchipuram, Vellore, Puducherry or Tirupati instead, treat it as a trip. Reach the town the evening before if the reporting time is early, and find the centre in daylight.
Carry a printed admit card and the photo ID you used in the application, and follow whatever else the admit card lists. Its instructions override anything you read on a forum or here.
Institutes a Chennai aspirant usually looks at
GATEiit has pages on these institutes. Each one sets out the GATE routes into its programmes, so check there before you shortlist.
- IIT Madras, in Chennai itself
- IIT Tirupati, in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh
- NIT Trichy, in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu
- IISc Bengaluru, in Bengaluru, Karnataka
- IIT Palakkad, in Palakkad, Kerala
- NIT Calicut, in Kozhikode, Kerala
The exam zone has nothing to do with where you can apply after the result. You can sit GATE in Chennai South and apply to IISc or NIT Calicut like anyone else. The full list is on /institutes.
Preparing from Chennai with free online resources
GATEiit is an online site. It has no centre, office or classroom in Chennai or anywhere else, and everything below works the same from a hostel room or from home.
- Start with the paper page: GATE DA or GATE CSE. Each has the syllabus and a link to the paper's WhatsApp group.
- Use previous year questions to see how topics are actually asked, then practice by topic.
- Read the plan for your paper: how to prepare for GATE DA 2027 or how to prepare for GATE CSE 2027. The rest are under guides.
With the first exam on 6 February 2027, the months from November onwards are for revision and full-length timed papers. If you sit GATE in a city that is new to you, a few mocks taken at the same time of day as your slot help more than another chapter of notes.
For the other two southern cities, see the Bengaluru and Hyderabad pages, or the full GATE 2027 exam cities list.

Frequently asked questions
Is Chennai one exam city or two for GATE 2027?
Two. The official tentative list has Chennai North and Chennai South as separate entries in the IIT Madras zone.
Can I put Chennai South first and Bengaluru North as a back-up?
No. Bengaluru North is in the IISc zone, and all six choices must be from one zone. From Chennai, back-ups such as Kanchipuram, Vellore, Puducherry or Tirupati stay inside the IIT Madras zone.
Is Tirupati in the same zone as Chennai?
Yes. Tirupati, Chittoor and Nellore are listed under Andhra Pradesh in the IIT Madras zone, so they can sit alongside Chennai North and Chennai South.
Will I definitely get a centre in Chennai if I chose it first?
No guarantee. GATE 2027 can allot a city outside your six options, and it can add or remove cities from the tentative list. The city allotment notification is due on 4 January 2027.
Which area of Chennai is my centre in?
The official list does not map areas to Chennai North or Chennai South. The exact centre address appears on your admit card.
Whom do I contact about my exam city?
The IIT Madras zone office, which is also the GATE 2027 organising institute: helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in or 044-22578200.
Can I still change my exam city?
Registration closed in October 2026, and the scrutiny-defect rectification window has been extended, most recently to 3 November 2026. The data-correction window is listed as TBA, so watch the official site and check there whether it allows a city change.
Does writing GATE in Chennai help my chances at IIT Madras?
No. Your exam city has no bearing on admissions. Each institute applies its own process to your GATE result.
