GATE 2027 in Kochi: Aluva - Ernakulam Exam City and Zone Choices
Kochi's GATE 2027 exam city is Aluva - Ernakulam (IIT Madras zone), while Angamaly is IISc zone. Plan six same-zone cities, exam day and institutes.
Updated 2 November 2026 · GATEiit Team
Look for Aluva - Ernakulam, not Kochi
Scroll the Kerala rows of the official exam-city page and you will not find "Kochi" or "Cochin". The entry for us is written as Aluva - Ernakulam, and it is an IIT Madras-zone city. When you fill the form, that is the exact name to select.
The hyphen joins two places, so do not read it as a promise that your centre will be in Ernakulam town or in Aluva. GATE allots the centre, and the admit card tells you where it is.
Kerala is split between two zones, and the split does not follow north and south as neatly as you might expect:
| Zone (coordinating institute) | Kerala exam cities |
|---|---|
| IIT Madras, Chennai | Alappuzha, Aluva - Ernakulam, Attingal, Chengannur, Idukki, Kanjirapally, Kollam, Kothamangalam, Kottayam, Muvattupuzha, Thiruvananthapuram |
| IISc, Bengaluru | Angamaly, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Wayanad |
Pathanamthitta is the one most easily misread: it belongs to the IISc zone, while Chengannur, Kottayam and Kollam are all IIT Madras zone.
The whole list is tentative. GATE may add or drop a city, and may allot a city you did not choose. GATE 2027 is held only in India.
Angamaly or Aluva - Ernakulam: pick the zone before the cities
The Ernakulam district administration lists Aluva, Angamaly, Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam among its municipalities, and Kochi Corporation as its one corporation. So four GATE exam cities are in our own district. The catch is that they do not share a zone. Aluva - Ernakulam, Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam are IIT Madras zone. Angamaly is IISc zone.
All six choices must come from one zone, so you are choosing between two lists, not mixing the best of both.
The IIT Madras-zone list
This fits anyone who will be in Kochi itself in February, or south and east of it:
- Aluva - Ernakulam
- Muvattupuzha
- Kothamangalam
- Kottayam
- Alappuzha
- Idukki, Chengannur or Kanjirapally, whichever you can reach or stay in
Coimbatore and Pollachi are also IIT Madras zone, which is useful if you have family across the border in Tamil Nadu.
The IISc-zone list
If you live near Angamaly, or will be in Thrissur or Kozhikode in February for work or a hostel, start from Angamaly instead:
- Angamaly
- Thrissur
- Palakkad
- Kozhikode
- Kannur or Wayanad
- Bengaluru North or Bengaluru South, if you can stay there
Once Angamaly is in, none of Aluva - Ernakulam, Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam or Kottayam can be. The reverse holds too. Palakkad is the other trap: it is IISc zone, so it cannot sit next to Coimbatore on the same form.
Who answers exam-city questions for Kochi
With Aluva - Ernakulam as your first choice, your zone office is IIT Madras, which is also the organising institute for GATE 2027. One helpdesk covers both your city and the application:
- IIT Madras, Chennai – 600 036: helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in, 044-22578200
If you went with the Angamaly list, your zone office is IISc, Bengaluru instead: helpdesk.gate@iisc.ac.in, or 080-22932644, 080-22932392, 080-22933333.
Write from your registered email and quote your enrolment ID. The official dates page shows the application data correction window as TBA, so do not count on changing your cities later.
Planning the exam weekends from Kochi
GATE 2027 runs on Saturdays and Sundays: 6 and 7 February, 13 and 14 February, and 20 and 21 February 2027. The city allotment notification is due on 4 January 2027. The admit card date is still TBA, and the admit card will carry your exact centre and reporting time.
A few things worth doing once you have it:
- Look up the centre the same day and time the route from the place you will sleep the night before. A centre allotted under Aluva - Ernakulam can still be some distance from your house.
- If you were allotted a back-up such as Idukki, Kothamangalam or Kanjirapally, travel the previous day rather than on the morning of the exam.
- If you are writing two papers, the official two-paper page says the centre for the second paper may differ from the first, though it will be in the same city. Check both addresses.
Carry the printed admit card and the original photo ID you gave in the application, along with anything else the admit card asks for. What you may take inside is set by the admit card, so follow it rather than advice from friends.
Kerala institutes to look at
Two institutes in Kerala have GATEiit pages, and each one sets out its GATE routes for DA and CSE candidates:
- IIT Palakkad, at Kanjikode in Palakkad
- NIT Calicut, in Kozhikode
If you are open to leaving Kerala, IIT Madras, NIT Trichy, NITK Surathkal and IISc Bengaluru all have pages, and the rest are on /institutes.
The exam city plays no part in admission. Writing at an IISc-zone centre does not help with IISc, and writing in Palakkad does not help with IIT Palakkad. Choose your city for the exam morning, and your institutes on their own terms.
Preparing from Kochi with GATEiit
GATEiit is an online site with no centre or office in Kochi or anywhere else. Everything on it is free and works the same from a hostel room or a flat anywhere in the district.
Pick your paper first. GATE DA is Data Science and Artificial Intelligence; GATE CSE is Computer Science and Information Technology. Each page has the syllabus. DA and CS are an allowed two-paper combination in GATE 2027, if you want to write both.
Then:
- Solve previous papers year by year on /pyq, and use /practice for topic-wise sets.
- Follow the GATE DA 2027 preparation guide or the GATE CSE 2027 preparation guide, and browse the other guides.
- The DA and CSE paper pages link a WhatsApp group if you want to discuss problems with other aspirants.
Since every exam day falls on a weekend, sit your full mock tests on Saturday or Sunday mornings. For the national picture see GATE 2027 and the exam-city overview. The Thiruvananthapuram page covers the same zone further south, and the Coimbatore page is useful if Tamil Nadu is on your list.
