What is GATE CSE?
GATE CSE (paper code CS, Computer Science and Information Technology) is the most popular GATE paper. A good score opens M.Tech, MS and PhD admissions at the IITs, IISc, NITs and IIITs, and some public sector companies also use GATE CS scores in recruitment.
The paper tests the whole of core computer science at undergraduate level: discrete maths and the rest of engineering mathematics, digital logic, computer organization, programming and data structures, algorithms, theory of computation, compilers, operating systems, databases and computer networks.
It suits you if you enjoy systems and theory alike. If your interest is mostly probability, linear algebra and machine learning, also look at GATE DA, the newer data science paper.
GATE CSE 2027: key facts
These details come from the official GATE 2027 website run by IIT Madras, the organising institute this year. Always re-check them there before you act.
| Organising institute | IIT Madras |
| Exam dates | 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 (forenoon and afternoon sessions) |
| Result | 19 March 2027 |
| Mode | Computer-based test, English only |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Questions and marks | 65 questions, 100 marks |

Subject-wise weightage from previous papers
GATE does not publish a fixed mark split per subject beyond General Aptitude, so the best guide is what past papers actually asked. We tagged every question in the 11 official GATE CSE papers from 2020 to 2026 (715 questions) by subject. Average marks per paper:
| Subject | Average marks | Range across papers |
|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 | 15 every year |
| Engineering Mathematics | 14.0 | 11–19 |
| Programming and Data Structures | 10.3 | 7–13 |
| Computer Organization and Architecture | 9.1 | 6–12 |
| Operating System | 8.5 | 6–10 |
| Computer Networks | 8.1 | 6–10 |
| Algorithms | 7.8 | 5–11 |
| Theory of Computation | 7.5 | 6–9 |
| Databases | 7.4 | 5–9 |
| Compiler Design | 6.5 | 4–8 |
| Digital Logic | 5.8 | 3–8 |
Three things stand out. Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude together are close to 30 marks every time. No core subject drops below about 4 marks, so skipping a whole subject is risky. And Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms overlap heavily in practice: together they are worth about 18 marks a paper.
Treat these as tendencies, not promises: the split moves by a few marks each year. You can see every question behind these numbers in GATE CSE previous year questions.
How the paper is built
- 65 questions, 100 marks, 3 hours. Questions 1–5 and 11–35 carry 1 mark; 6–10 and 36–65 carry 2 marks.
- General Aptitude: the first 10 questions, 15 marks, the same style in every GATE paper.
- Three question types. MCQs have one correct option. MSQs can have one or more correct options. NATs ask you to type a number, sometimes accepted within a range.
- Negative marking only for MCQs: a wrong 1-mark MCQ costs 1/3 mark and a wrong 2-mark MCQ costs 2/3. MSQs and NATs have no negative marking.
- No partial credit for MSQs: you must select exactly the right set of options.
- Practise with the virtual calculator. Recent GATE exams have provided an on-screen calculator and have not allowed physical ones; the GATE 2027 information brochure will confirm the rules.
Recent CSE papers lean on MSQ and NAT questions, so accuracy matters more than guessing. A wrong MSQ costs nothing, but a half-right MSQ earns nothing either.
What to study first
Order your preparation by marks per hour of effort and by what later subjects need:
- Programming and Data Structures, then Algorithms. They carry about 18 marks together, and the same skills (tracing code, recursion, complexity) show up in Operating Systems, Compiler Design and even Databases questions.
- Discrete Mathematics (logic, sets and relations, combinatorics, graph theory). It is the largest part of Engineering Mathematics and the foundation for Theory of Computation.
- Computer Organization and Digital Logic together. Number representation and circuits lead naturally into caches, pipelining and addressing modes.
- Operating Systems and Databases. Both are concept-heavy but very predictable: scheduling, paging, synchronisation, normalisation, SQL and transactions recur every year.
- Theory of Computation and Compiler Design together. Automata and grammars feed straight into lexing and parsing.
- Computer Networks. Leave it for the middle stretch, then revise it heavily: the numericals (IP addressing, sliding window, delays) reward recent practice.
- Linear Algebra, Calculus and Probability. Short topics with reliable questions; finish them early enough to practise.
Keep General Aptitude running in the background: 20–30 minutes, three or four days a week, from the first week.
A 14-week plan
This plan assumes about 4–5 focused hours a day. Stretch each block if you have less time; keep the order.
| Weeks | Focus | Finish the block with |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Programming in C, recursion, arrays, stacks, queues, linked lists | Every PDS question from two recent papers |
| 3 | Trees, BSTs, heaps, graphs; asymptotic analysis | A timed 30-question mixed test |
| 4–5 | Algorithms: sorting, hashing, greedy, dynamic programming, divide and conquer, graph algorithms | All algorithm PYQs from 2020–2026 |
| 6 | Discrete mathematics: logic, sets, relations, combinatorics, graph theory | One subject test on discrete maths |
| 7 | Digital logic and number representation; start Computer Organization | K-maps and floating point, until error-free |
| 8 | Computer Organization: caches, pipelining, addressing modes, I/O | COA PYQs, especially cache and pipeline numericals |
| 9 | Operating Systems | Scheduling, paging and synchronisation PYQs |
| 10 | Databases | SQL, normal forms, B+ trees and transactions PYQs |
| 11 | Theory of Computation and Compiler Design | Automata, grammars and parsing-table PYQs |
| 12 | Computer Networks; linear algebra, calculus, probability | IP addressing and sliding-window numericals |
| 13 | Full-length mocks (3) and weak-topic repair | Your error log, sorted by topic |
| 14 | Mocks (3), formula sheets, light revision | A calm last week |
From week 3 on, spend one session a week revising earlier subjects, or they will fade by February.
Preparing alongside college or a job
Most CSE aspirants are final-year students or working engineers. With 2–3 hours on weekdays and longer weekends, stretch the plan above to 24–28 weeks and protect three habits:
- One subject at a time on weekdays, with mixed PYQs at weekends.
- A fixed daily slot. Ninety focused minutes every day beats a six-hour Sunday.
- Your college syllabus is a head start. If you have just studied OS or DBMS in a semester, do those GATE topics now while they are fresh.
Subject-wise strategy
Engineering Mathematics
Discrete maths dominates: propositional and first-order logic, counting, recurrences and graph theory appear almost every year. Linear algebra (rank, eigenvalues, systems of equations) and probability (conditional probability, standard distributions) give quick marks. Practise until you can solve each type in two to three minutes.
Programming and Data Structures
Expect C code to trace: pointers, recursion, static variables and parameter passing. Draw memory and stacks on paper rather than reasoning in your head. For data structures, know the operations and costs on stacks, queues, linked lists, BSTs, heaps and hash tables cold.
Algorithms
Focus on recurrence solving, asymptotic comparison, and the classic algorithms: sorting, Dijkstra, Bellman–Ford, Prim, Kruskal, BFS, DFS and topological sort. For dynamic programming, practise writing the recurrence before computing anything.
Computer Organization and Architecture
Cache mapping and access-time numericals, pipeline speed-up and hazards, and addressing modes are the staples. Write the formula, then substitute: most mistakes are units (bits, bytes, words).
Operating System
CPU scheduling (draw the Gantt chart), page replacement, paging and TLB numericals, semaphores and classic synchronisation problems, deadlock and the banker's algorithm. Synchronisation questions are subtle: read every line of code given.
Databases
Functional dependencies, keys and normal forms; relational algebra and SQL output questions; B and B+ tree order and splits; serialisability and recoverability of schedules. For SQL, evaluate the query on the sample table step by step.
Computer Networks
IPv4 subnetting and CIDR, fragmentation, sliding window and efficiency, CRC, routing algorithms, TCP congestion control and the application layer. Keep a one-page formula sheet for delays and window sizes.
Theory of Computation
Constructing and minimising DFAs, regular expressions, closure properties, identifying regular versus context-free languages, and decidability. Learn the standard counterexamples; they answer many MSQs quickly.
Compiler Design
Parsing (FIRST and FOLLOW sets, LL(1) and LR tables), syntax-directed translation, three-address code and basic data-flow analysis such as liveness. Most questions are mechanical once the method is practised.
Digital Logic
K-map minimisation, number systems and 2's complement, floating-point representation, multiplexers and counters. Small subject, quick marks.
General Aptitude
Verbal ability, numerical reasoning and spatial puzzles, 15 marks in about 20 minutes of the exam. Timed practice is the whole strategy.
Previous year questions
Previous year questions are the closest thing to the real exam. GATEiit has every question from the 11 official GATE CSE papers from 2020 to 2026 (715 questions), each with the answer from the official key, the concept tested and a first step.
- Work through GATE CSE PYQs subject by subject as you finish each topic.
- In the last month, take full papers under exam conditions.
- Practise CSE questions in learning mode to check answers instantly with GATE marking.
- Keep an error log: for each mistake, note the concept and why you got it wrong. Re-solve those questions a week later.
Mock tests and exam technique
Take at least 6–8 full-length mocks in the last five weeks, in the same three-hour slot as your exam. Then follow a fixed order on exam day:
- General Aptitude first (about 20 minutes) to bank 15 marks calmly.
- One pass for quick questions: anything you can solve in under two minutes.
- Second pass for 2-mark numericals you know how to do.
- Skip and return: mark long questions and come back with the time left.
Guess on MCQs only when you can eliminate two options, because of negative marking. Never leave an MSQ or NAT you have worked out, since they carry no penalty.
Best resources
Standard textbooks are enough; collect one good book per subject and stick to it.
| Subject | Widely used texts |
|---|---|
| Discrete Mathematics | Kenneth Rosen, Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications |
| Digital Logic | M. Morris Mano, Digital Design |
| Computer Organization | Hamacher et al., Computer Organization; Patterson and Hennessy, Computer Organization and Design |
| Programming in C | Kernighan and Ritchie, The C Programming Language |
| Algorithms | Cormen et al., Introduction to Algorithms |
| Theory of Computation | Hopcroft, Motwani and Ullman, Introduction to Automata Theory; Peter Linz, Formal Languages and Automata |
| Compiler Design | Aho, Lam, Sethi and Ullman, Compilers: Principles, Techniques and Tools |
| Operating System | Silberschatz, Galvin and Gagne, Operating System Concepts |
| Databases | Silberschatz, Korth and Sudarshan, Database System Concepts; Elmasri and Navathe |
| Computer Networks | Kurose and Ross, Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach; Forouzan |
NPTEL courses from IIT faculty cover every subject for free and are a good substitute for coaching lectures.
Common mistakes
- Reading without solving. Watching lectures feels productive; marks come from solving questions.
- Leaving Engineering Mathematics for the end. It is about 14 marks and very learnable.
- Ignoring units in COA and Networks numericals (bits versus bytes, ms versus µs).
- Guessing MSQs. One wrong option makes the whole answer wrong.
- Skipping revision. Subjects studied in October fade by February unless revisited weekly.
- Too many sources. One book and one set of PYQs per subject is enough.
The last 30 days
Stop starting new topics about four weeks before your exam. Use the month for:
- Two or three full mocks a week, each followed by an equal amount of time analysing mistakes.
- Re-solving every question in your error log.
- One-page formula sheets for COA, OS and Networks numericals.
- General Aptitude every day, timed.
- Sleep and a fixed routine in the final week, matched to your session time.
After GATE CSE
With a valid score you can apply for M.Tech, MS (by research) and PhD programmes. IITs make M.Tech offers through COAP; NITs, IIITs and many other institutes admit through CCMT; IISc and several IITs also run their own MS and PhD admissions. Some public sector companies recruit through GATE CS scores; check each organisation's notification for its cut-off and process. Your score stays valid for three years.
