What GATE RA is, and what it isn't

RA stands for Robotics and Automation, and the official GATE 2027 papers page marks it as new. Like other GATE scores, an RA score is used for M.Tech, MS and PhD admissions, and some public sector organisations use GATE scores when they recruit.

The paper crosses at least four branches: circuits and sensors, mechanics, Python and data structures, and robot kinematics with factory automation on top. Few degrees teach all of that, so every RA candidate has a gap. Find yours in the first fortnight.

The 2027 syllabus has no AI or ML topics at all. If probability, linear algebra and machine learning are what draw you, the GATE DA 2027 preparation guide describes the paper built on them. DA is also one of the allowed second papers with RA, and the two share probability, linear algebra and Python.

How the GATE RA paper is marked

Each of the 65 questions carries 1 or 2 marks. General Aptitude contributes 10 questions and 15 marks.

Part A is worth 60 marks and is compulsory for everyone. Engineering Mathematics lives inside it as A.1. On the pattern page, RA is grouped with the papers whose 85 subject marks have no separate 13-mark Engineering Mathematics share. So don't build a plan around a fixed maths figure.

Part B is worth 25. You choose Electrical (B1) or Mechanical (B2) during the exam and answer that part only.

MCQs have one right option and are the only questions with a penalty: 1/3 of a mark for a wrong 1-mark answer, 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark answer. MSQs can have several right options and pay only when your selection is exactly right. NATs ask for a typed number and have no penalty.

Recent GATE exams have given candidates an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and have not permitted physical ones. The 2027 information brochure will confirm the rules. Practise kinematics numericals on a virtual calculator anyway; a 3D rotation by mouse is slow.

With 60 of 85 subject marks, Part A decides your result.

B1 or B2: picking your GATE RA optional part

You are allowed to pick B1 or B2 in the exam hall. Pick it in your planner instead, months earlier. Half-preparing both is the one choice that reliably costs marks.

Electrical, electronics, instrumentation and mechatronics students usually belong in B1, since op-amps, sampling and Bode plots grow out of Part A circuits.

Mechanical, production and automobile students usually belong in B2, where beams, gear trains and machine elements extend Part A mechanics.

Still unsure after a week? Take ten recent questions from each side of the EE and ME papers in the official archive, time yourself, and go with the side where you scored better.

Where to begin your GATE RA preparation

Start with linear algebra and engineering mechanics in the same fortnight. Matrices and rotations are the language of robot kinematics; free-body diagrams and plane rigid-body motion support both A.3 and B2.

Move to robot kinematics straight away while the matrices are fresh. Rotation matrices, homogeneous transformations and forward kinematics are what the paper is named for.

Circuits, digital logic, sensors and actuators come next, the biggest block in Part A by breadth. Mechanical students should budget extra weeks.

Python and data structures are the topics non-computing students postpone and regret. Hand-tracing a recursive function or a heap insertion is a skill built over many short sessions.

Automation and CIM (PLCs, AS/RS, CNC, positioning systems) is mostly conceptual and sits well after kinematics. Your Part B goes last, with a firm three to four weeks.

General Aptitude starts in week one: half an hour, three or four days a week.

A 14-week GATE RA schedule

Assumes four to five focused hours a day.

Weeks Topics Check yourself with
1 Linear algebra, calculus; engineering mechanics Equilibrium, friction and truss problems
2 Rotation matrices, homogeneous transformations, forward kinematics, robot classification End-effector position of a 2- and 3-link planar arm, by hand
3 Network elements, theorems, DC transients Thevenin equivalents and RC/RL time constants
4 AC steady state, resonance, two-port and three-phase; differential equations A timed mixed test on circuits and maths
5 Digital circuits; sensors and signal conditioning Counters, multiplexers, Wheatstone bridge outputs
6 Actuators; rigid-body dynamics; probability and statistics DC motor torque-speed and plane dynamics
7 Python and data structures Output of short programs; BST, heap and graph traversal questions
8 Robot applications; PLCs, CNC, material handling, AS/RS, positioning A full Part A revision test
9 Numerical methods; first Part B subject (B1.1 or B2.1) Op-amp or beam questions from past EE or ME papers
10 Second Part B subject (B1.2 or B2.2) Transforms or mechanisms
11 Third Part B subject (B1.3 or B2.3) Control or machine design
12 Part A repairs, Part B revision A list of mistakes grouped by Part A, B1 or B2
13 Three full mocks with analysis A short list of topics still leaking marks
14 Two or three mocks, formula sheets A steady final week

Keep one weekly session from week 3 for older topics. Kinematics in particular gets rusty.

Preparing for GATE RA with a job or final-year load

With two or three hours on weekdays and longer weekends, run the same sequence over 24 to 28 weeks.

Give weekdays to a single topic and weekends to mixed questions.

If your project or job touches PLC ladder logic, CNC programming or a robot arm, start A.3 there. Topics you have handled physically stay in memory far longer.

GATE RA subject-wise strategy

Engineering Mathematics

Linear algebra counts for more here because matrix work returns in every kinematics question. Hypothesis testing appears in the RA list, so do not stop probability at distributions.

Electric Circuits

Node and mesh analysis, the theorems, first-order transients, phasors, two-port parameters and balanced three-phase. Mechanical students should begin with DC resistor networks.

Digital Circuits

Boolean simplification, multiplexers, encoders and decoders, flip-flops and counters. The list is short. Go for zero errors.

Sensors and Actuators

Learn how each listed sensor works and how its signal is conditioned (bridges, amplifiers, filtering). For actuators, compare hydraulic, pneumatic and electric drives, then learn the torque-speed behaviour of DC, stepper and servo motors.

Engineering Mechanics

Draw a clean free-body diagram every time. Friction, belt-pulley, trusses and frames, and plane rigid-body kinematics and dynamics form the core.

Programming and Data Structures

Read Python and predict output, especially for loops, recursion, list slicing and dictionaries. Write small programs too. On paper, practise stack and queue operations, BST insertion and deletion, heap operations and BFS and DFS. The GATE CSE preparation guide treats data structures at greater depth than RA needs, which makes it useful for the harder questions.

Principles of Robotics

The centre of the paper. Get comfortable with coordinate frames, 2D and 3D rotation matrices, homogeneous transformations and forward kinematics of serial arms. A typical NAT gives link lengths and joint angles and asks for an end-effector coordinate. Learn manipulator classification, degrees of freedom, end-effectors, and the difference between accuracy and repeatability too.

Automation and Computer Integrated Manufacturing

PLCs, automated material handling and storage, automated identification, CNC, single and multi-axis positioning, and planning for automation. Keep short notes and revise often.

Part B1: Analog, Embedded, Signals and Control

Op-amp configurations, filters and data converters; microcontroller interrupts and interfacing; sampling and the Fourier, Laplace and Z transforms; then control through root locus, Bode, compensators and PID. Control links most closely to robot motion. The GATE EE 2027 study plan goes deeper into signals and control, and the GATE EC preparation guide into analog circuits.

Part B2: Materials, Mechanisms and Design

Mohr's circle, beams, torsion and columns; mechanisms, gear trains and single-degree vibrations; failure theories, fatigue and machine elements, plus CAD/CAM and additive manufacturing. These are core GATE ME syllabus topics and strategy as well.

General Aptitude

Fifteen marks in about 20 minutes. Practise only under a timer.

Past papers for a new paper like GATE RA

RA is new in 2027, so a long series of RA papers simply does not exist yet. Papers from related disciplines still show how GATE frames each topic. Download them, with answer keys, from the GATE 2026 official archive at IIT Guwahati.

Map each RA topic to a source paper. EE papers cover circuits, analog electronics, signals and control. IN papers are strong on sensors, transducers and signal conditioning, and the GATE IN preparation guide walks through that measurement side. ME papers cover mechanics, strength of materials, mechanisms, design and manufacturing. For Python, data structures and probability, use GATE DA previous year questions and GATE CSE previous year questions.

Solve only questions whose topic appears in the RA PDF. Grade against the official keys, write each mistake into an error log with its cause (frame mix-up, sign slip, units, misread), and redo it a week later. For topics found only in RA, such as manipulator kinematics and PLCs, use textbook worked examples.

GATE RA mocks and exam-day order

Plan at least six full mocks across the last five weeks, sat at your session time. Check any mock series against the 15–60–25 split; one that ignores B1/B2 or carries ML questions is testing a different paper.

On the day, General Aptitude first, in about 20 minutes. Then select your planned Part B and finish it while fresh. It is the smaller, well-defined block. Take Part A in two sweeps: quick conceptual questions on sensors, automation and robot classification, then the numericals in circuits, kinematics and maths. Long questions get marked and revisited.

Because MCQs carry a penalty, guess only after eliminating two options. A NAT costs nothing if wrong, so enter any value you have worked out. Recheck units and decimal places before moving on.

Mistakes specific to GATE RA

Preparing machine learning for this paper wastes weeks; the 2027 syllabus has none.

Splitting time between B1 and B2 is the next most expensive error, since you answer only one. Under-preparing Part A is close behind. It holds 60 of the 85 subject marks.

Mechanical students tend to dodge circuits and electrical students dodge mechanics. Both sit in compulsory Part A.

In kinematics, most wrong answers come from frames, not arithmetic. Write the frame of every vector before multiplying matrices, and check whether a rotation is about a fixed or a moving axis.

Python left to the final month rarely sticks. And on MSQs, one wrong tick voids the question.

The last month before GATE RA

Four weeks out, stop opening new chapters.

Two full mocks a week is enough if each gets equal review time. Re-solve every error-log entry.

Build one-page sheets for transformations and kinematics, network theorems, sensor and actuator principles, and your Part B formulas. Trace a couple of Python snippets every other day so the habit holds. Keep General Aptitude daily and timed. In the last week, settle your sleep and study at the hours your session will run.

After GATE RA: admissions and options

A GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced.

IITs make M.Tech offers through COAP, while NITs, IIITs and many other institutes admit through CCMT. IISc and several IITs run their own MS and PhD admissions as well. RA being new, check each programme's admission notice to confirm it accepts an RA score. Some public sector organisations recruit through GATE scores and publish their own notifications listing eligible papers and process; read each one.
