What is GATE EE?
EE is the Electrical Engineering paper of GATE. Its score is accepted for M.Tech, MS and PhD admission across the IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs and many other institutes, and some public sector organisations read it during recruitment.
Think of it as a calculation paper. A typical question hands you a two-winding transformer's test data and asks for full-load efficiency, or a single-line diagram and asks for the fault current in per unit. Others want a gain crossover frequency off a Bode plot, or a bridge rectifier's average output at a given firing angle. So solve forty problems from a chapter rather than reading it twice.

Aptitude tests verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial reasoning. Print the official EE syllabus PDF and tick each phrase once you can solve a problem on it, not when you have merely read it.
How the GATE EE paper is scored
Ten aptitude questions bring 15 marks. The other 55 questions bring 85, and 13 of those 85 are reserved for Engineering Mathematics set specifically for electrical students. That leaves 72 marks for the nine electrical subjects, with no fixed share for any one of them. Each question is worth either 1 or 2 marks.
An MCQ has one correct option. An MSQ may have one or several, and you score only by picking exactly the right set, with no partial credit. A NAT wants a typed number.
Wrong MCQs cost you: 1/3 of a mark on a 1-mark question, 2/3 on a 2-mark one. MSQs and NATs carry no penalty at all.
Recent GATE exams supplied an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and did not allow physical ones. The GATE 2027 information brochure will set this year's rules, but practise on a virtual calculator anyway: a per-unit fault calculation on it is slower than you expect.
Most EE questions are two or three reasoning steps ending in a number. On a NAT, a correct method with one slipped decimal still scores zero.
What to study first for GATE EE
EE subjects stack on one another, so order them by what each one borrows.
- Electric Circuits comes first. Phasors, Thevenin equivalents, RL and RLC transients and balanced three-phase power reappear in machines, power systems and power electronics.
- Run Engineering Mathematics next to it. Transients need differential equations and complex algebra; control and state space need Laplace transforms and eigenvalues.
- Signals and Systems follows. Its Laplace and Fourier work is the vocabulary of control, and its RMS and average values feed converter harmonics.
- Electrical Machines is large, but its numericals repeat in shape. Begin once magnetic circuits feel easy.
- Power Systems has the longest topic list and leans on three-phase circuits, per-unit values and machine models.
- Control Systems is nearly self-contained once Laplace is solid.
- Power Electronics wants circuits plus waveform averaging.
- Analog and Digital Electronics, Measurements and Electromagnetic Fields are smaller. Keep them moving without crowding out the core four.
Aptitude runs alongside from week one: half an hour, three or four days a week.
A 14-week GATE EE plan
This assumes five or six focused hours a day. With fewer, stretch the blocks and keep the order.
| Weeks | Focus | Finish the block with |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Electric Circuits: theorems, transients, AC steady state, resonance, two-ports, three-phase | Circuit questions from two recent official papers |
| 3 | Engineering Mathematics: linear algebra, differential equations, complex variables | A timed 25-question maths test |
| 4 | Signals and Systems; RMS and average values | Transform and sampling problems, error-free |
| 5–6 | Electrical Machines: transformers, DC machines, induction and synchronous machines | Equivalent-circuit and efficiency numericals |
| 7–8 | Power Systems: lines, per-unit, load flow, faults, protection, stability, dispatch | Fault and equal area numericals |
| 9 | Control Systems | Routh, root locus, Bode and Nyquist problems |
| 10 | Power Electronics | Converter and inverter waveform questions |
| 11 | Analog and Digital Electronics | Op-amp, amplifier and logic circuit questions |
| 12 | Measurements; Electromagnetic Fields; calculus, vector calculus, probability | One mixed test across the three |
| 13 | Full-length mocks (3) and weak-topic repair | Your error log, sorted by subject |
| 14 | Mocks (3), formula sheets, light revision | A calm last week |
From week 3, give one session a week to older subjects, or September's circuits will be shaky by February.
Preparing for GATE EE alongside college or a job
With two or three hours on weekdays and more at weekends, stretch the plan to 24–28 weeks.
On weekdays, stay with one subject. Save Saturday for a mixed set that pulls in two older subjects as well, say ten machines questions with ten control questions.
If your current semester has power systems or control, take that GATE section now. Lectures and lab reports are already doing half the revision for you.
Spend short sessions solving. Ten transformer or load-flow numericals teach more than an hour of reading.
Subject-wise strategy for GATE EE
Engineering Mathematics
These 13 marks are written for electrical students. Expect eigenvalues of a small matrix, a second-order ODE with constant coefficients, a contour integral solved with residues, a divergence or curl, and a probability question with an engineering setting. Each should take you two to three minutes.
Electric Circuits
Drill node and mesh analysis with dependent sources, Thevenin and Norton, and first and second-order transients with switching at t = 0. In AC work, be quick with complex power, power factor correction and three-phase line and phase relations. Two-ports and resonance are short once practised.
Electromagnetic Fields
Keep one page of standard results: field and potential of point, line, sheet and spherical charges, and capacitance of parallel-plate, coaxial and spherical geometries. Magnetic circuits lead straight into machines.
Signals and Systems
Learn LTI properties, Fourier series and transform pairs, sampling and aliasing, and Laplace and Z transforms with their regions of convergence. The syllabus names RMS and average values of periodic waveforms explicitly, and they return in power electronics.
Electrical Machines
Transformers anchor it: equivalent circuit, OC and SC tests, regulation, and the load at which efficiency peaks. Then vector groups, DC machine speed control, the induction motor equivalent circuit and torque–slip curve, and synchronous machine regulation and parallel operation. Sketch the phasor diagram before calculating.
Power Systems
Work in per unit from day one. Cover line models, Y-bus formation, Gauss–Seidel and Newton–Raphson load flow, symmetrical components and unbalanced faults, economic dispatch, protection and the equal area criterion. A neat formula sheet pays off most here.
Control Systems
Block diagram and signal flow graph reduction come first. After that: time response of second-order systems, steady-state error constants, Routh–Hurwitz, root locus, Bode and Nyquist plots with gain and phase margin, lead and lag compensators, PID action, and finally state-space models and the state transition matrix.
Electrical and Electronic Measurements
Bridges, potentiometers, wattmeter and energy meter connections, CTs and PTs, oscilloscopes and error propagation. Compact; one careful pass plus regular revisits.
Analog and Digital Electronics
Clippers, clampers, biasing, amplifier frequency response, op-amps and active filters, timers and oscillators; then logic minimisation, counters and data converters. Ideal op-amp problems are among the fastest marks on the paper.
Power Electronics
Learn device behaviour, then draw the output waveform for every converter before solving anything: the three basic DC-DC converters, controlled and uncontrolled rectifiers, and inverters under sinusoidal PWM. Questions nearly always reduce to average and RMS values, harmonic content, and power or distortion factor taken from those sketches.
General Aptitude
Fifteen marks. Timed practice a few times a week is the whole method.
GATE EE past papers: where to find them and how to use them
Nothing predicts the real exam better than earlier official papers. IIT Guwahati, which ran GATE 2026, hosts EE question papers and answer keys in its GATE 2026 download archive.
Use them twice. Solve a subject's past questions right after you finish it, then sit complete papers in three-hour stretches in the final month.
Mark against the official key, including NAT ranges. Log each miss with the concept behind it and the cause: a sign error in a mesh equation, a wrong base in a per-unit problem, a misread root locus. Re-solve logged questions a week later without looking.
A topic missing from the 2027 syllabus PDF deserves little of your time.
GATE EE mock tests and exam-day technique
Sit six to eight full mocks in the last five weeks. Schedule them in the same session as your real paper, and use only an on-screen calculator.
Fix your order of attack in advance. Aptitude first, in about twenty minutes. Next, sweep the paper for anything solvable in under two minutes; these often sit in measurements, digital electronics and control. Then take on the 2-mark numericals you already know how to set up in machines, power systems and power electronics. Leave long work, such as a Newton–Raphson iteration or a messy state transition matrix, for the end.
Negative marking only touches MCQs. Guess on one only after you have struck out two options. A worked MSQ or NAT should never be left blank, since neither loses marks.
Before typing a NAT answer, check two things: whether the question wants kW or MW, per unit or amperes, and how many decimal places it asks for.

Circuits, signals, control and electronics overlap heavily with EC and IN. Still choosing? The GATE EC preparation guide and the GATE IN preparation guide show how those papers treat the shared material. Other papers are covered in our GATE preparation guides.
Where GATE EE candidates lose marks
Rushing circuits is the first. Shaky circuit analysis resurfaces later as wrong answers in machines, power systems and converters.
Mixed per-unit bases come next. Before any fault or load flow calculation, move every quantity onto one common base.
Line and phase values get swapped in three-phase circuits, transformers and induction motors. Write down which you are using at the top of the working.
In power electronics and measurements, students confuse peak, RMS and average values. A moving-iron meter reads RMS; a PMMC meter reads average. Know which one the question gives you.
Leaving Engineering Mathematics to the end throws away 13 learnable marks. Guessing MSQs is as costly: one wrong option voids the answer.
Your last 30 days before GATE EE
Four weeks out, stop opening new chapters.
Take two or three mocks a week and give each one as long for review as it took to write. Work through your error log again from the top.
Build one-page sheets for machines, power systems, control and power electronics: efficiency conditions, torque–slip relations, sequence-network fault formulas, second-order response terms, converter output expressions. Read them daily.
Do a short aptitude set daily and keep computing on a virtual calculator.
In the final week, sleep at fixed hours and keep your waking routine matched to your session time.
After GATE EE: admissions and jobs
A valid EE score lets you apply for M.Tech, MS by research and PhD programmes in electrical engineering and its specialisations: power systems, power electronics and drives, control, instrumentation. IIT M.Tech offers go through COAP. NITs, IIITs and many other institutes admit through CCMT. IISc and several IITs also run separate MS and PhD admissions.
Some public sector organisations use GATE scores when hiring; each publishes its own notification listing accepted papers, eligibility and selection steps. Qualifying guarantees neither admission nor a job.
A GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced, so a good result can still back an application two years later.
The official list lets an EE candidate add DA, EC, IN, PH or RA as a second paper. Physics students with an electrical bent might read how to prepare for GATE PH; control and drives people often look at GATE RA preparation; and the probability and linear algebra you already use make the GATE DA 2027 guide worth a look. You can compare all 30 GATE papers before deciding.
