What is GATE PH?
PH is the Physics paper of GATE, written mostly by B.Sc., integrated M.Sc., B.S. and M.Sc. physics students, along with some engineering physics graduates. A valid score is accepted for M.Tech, MS and PhD admission at the IITs, IISc, NITs and other institutes, and some public sector organisations use GATE scores when they recruit.
It covers the whole university curriculum, down to the lab skill of measuring resistivity by the four-probe method.
Speed with standard results separates good PH scores from average ones. Know the hydrogen ground-state energy and the free-electron Fermi energy before you enter the hall, and spend exam time on what the question does with them.

How GATE PH is marked
Sixty-five questions, three hours, 100 marks, and each question worth either 1 or 2.
General Aptitude accounts for 10 questions and 15 marks. The other 55 questions and 85 marks are all physics, spread over the eleven sections. No split between sections is published, so skipping one is a blind gamble.
Question formats differ in how they punish error. In an MCQ, one option is right, and a wrong pick costs 1/3 of a mark on a 1-mark question or 2/3 on a 2-mark question. An MSQ may have several correct options; it pays only when you select exactly that set, with nothing for a partial match and nothing deducted for a miss. A NAT asks for a number and carries no penalty either.
Recent GATE exams have offered an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and have not allowed physical ones. The GATE 2027 information brochure will confirm the rules. Practise with a virtual calculator anyway, especially for anything with exponentials or powers of ten, such as Boltzmann factors and nuclear Q-values.
The right order for GATE PH topics
Physics courses lean on one another, so order matters.
Mathematical Physics goes first. Eigenvalue problems, Fourier series, contour integrals and second-order ODEs return in quantum mechanics, electrodynamics and optics, and weak mathematics drags every later chapter.
Classical Mechanics is second, because Hamiltonians, Poisson brackets and normal modes are the language that quantum and statistical mechanics are written in.
Quantum Mechanics then opens the atomic, molecular and solid state sections. Spin, addition of angular momenta and perturbation theory are exactly what fine structure, the Zeeman effect and band theory call for.
Electromagnetic Theory has to precede Optical Physics. Boundary conditions and polarisation carry over directly into Fresnel coefficients, interference and Jones matrices.
Statistical Mechanics comes before Solid State, since Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics underpin free electrons, carrier concentrations and lattice heat capacity.
Nuclear and Particle Physics, Electronics and Measurements stand more on their own, so they can come last. General Aptitude runs in the background from week one, a few short sessions a week.
A 14-week GATE PH study plan
Assumes four or five focused hours a day and a B.Sc.-level grounding. If you have less time, lengthen the blocks without reordering them.
| Weeks | Focus | Finish the block with |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mathematical Physics: vector spaces, matrices, differential equations | Eigenvalue and ODE questions from past papers |
| 2 | Mathematical Physics: complex analysis, Fourier analysis, tensors | Residue theorem integrals until quick and clean |
| 3 | Classical Mechanics: Lagrangian, Hamiltonian, central force, small oscillations | Normal-mode and Kepler problems |
| 4 | Classical Mechanics: rigid bodies, canonical transformations, special relativity | A timed mixed test on Sections 2 and 3 |
| 5 | Quantum Mechanics: postulates, 1D potentials, harmonic oscillator | Bound-state and tunnelling questions |
| 6 | Quantum Mechanics: angular momentum, hydrogen atom, perturbation, variational method, scattering | Spin and perturbation questions |
| 7 | Electromagnetic Theory: electrostatics, magnetostatics, images, multipoles | Boundary value problems |
| 8 | Electromagnetic Theory: Maxwell's equations, waves, reflection, Poynting theorem; Optical Physics | Fresnel equations and interference questions |
| 9 | Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics | Partition-function and quantum-statistics questions |
| 10 | Atomic and Molecular Physics | Term symbols, Zeeman and spectra questions |
| 11 | Solid State Physics | Diffraction, band theory and semiconductor questions |
| 12 | Nuclear and Particle Physics; Electronics; Measurements and Error Analysis | Op-amp, logic and error-propagation questions |
| 13 | Full-length mocks (3) and weak-topic repair | Your error log, sorted by section |
| 14 | Mocks (3), formula sheets, light revision | A calm last week |
Quantum gets two full weeks because four later sections depend on it. Starting in week 4, spend one session a week revisiting older sections.
Studying for GATE PH during an M.Sc., B.Sc. or job
On two or three hours a weekday, around a project, lab hours or a teaching job, spread the plan over 24 to 28 weeks.
The lab is underrated preparation. Error propagation, four-probe resistivity, op-amp circuits and power supplies are things you have already built or measured, and the Measurements and Electronics sections ask about exactly those.
Match GATE sections to your semester. If you are sitting a solid state or nuclear course this term, do those sections now. Keep weekends for mixed past-paper sets.
Section-by-section strategy for GATE PH
Measurements and Error Analysis
Short and practical. Be solid on error propagation, significant figures and dimensions, and be able to explain why four-probe measurement removes contact resistance, where ground loops come from, how a regulated DC supply is put together and what a lock-in amplifier extracts.
Mathematical Physics
Diagonalise matrices quickly, spot Hermitian and unitary ones, solve the standard ODEs, and evaluate real integrals by residues. Fourier series and transforms resurface throughout. Tensor transformation rules need only a brief pass.
Classical Mechanics
Write the Lagrangian, spot cyclic coordinates, read off conserved quantities. Drill coupled-oscillator normal modes, effective potentials for central forces, Poisson brackets, and Lorentz transformations with relativistic kinematics.
Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics
Everything flows from the partition function. Compute it, then get energy, entropy, free energy and heat capacity from it. Know the Fermi and Bose distributions, black body results, and first versus second order transitions. Lost factors of k_B and degeneracy are common.
Electromagnetic Theory
Image charges and multipole expansions reward careful setup. For waves, know skin depth, Fresnel coefficients at normal and oblique incidence, the Brewster angle and the Poynting vector.
Optical Physics
Fringe width, Newton's rings, resolving power and grating dispersion are direct numericals. Jones and ray-transfer matrices are compact. For lasers, know the Einstein coefficients and why a two-level system cannot sustain inversion.
Quantum Mechanics
Be quick with infinite and finite wells, delta potentials, the oscillator via ladder operators, degeneracy counting in 2D and 3D boxes, commutators, Clebsch-Gordan basics and first-order perturbation. Many questions test exact standard results.
Atomic and Molecular Physics
Term symbols, Hund's rules, the Lande g-factor, normal and anomalous Zeeman splitting, selection rules. Rotational constants, vibrational levels and Raman shifts are formula work. NMR, ESR and Mossbauer fit on short notes.
Solid State Physics
Reciprocal lattice, structure factor and systematic absences, Bragg diffraction, Debye and Einstein models, Fermi energy, carrier statistics and mobility, magnetism, superconductivity. Mostly formula-driven numericals.
Nuclear and Particle Physics
Terms of the semi-empirical mass formula, shell-model ground-state spin and parity, Q-values, decay kinematics. For particle reactions, check baryon number, lepton number, strangeness and isospin until deciding whether a reaction is allowed takes seconds.
Electronics
Biasing, ideal op-amp circuits, active filters, the Barkhausen condition, Boolean simplification, flip-flops and counters, ADC and DAC resolution. The same material is treated in more depth in the GATE EC preparation guide.
General Aptitude
Fifteen marks. Short timed sets, a few times a week.
Using GATE PH past papers well
Old official papers show how PH phrases questions. IIT Guwahati, organiser of GATE 2026, hosts recent PH papers with answer keys in the GATE 2026 download archive.
Solve them section by section as you finish each block of the plan, then switch to full timed papers in the last month. Mark against the official key. For each wrong answer, record whether it came from a concept gap, a misremembered standard result, an algebra slip or a misread question, and redo it a week later.
Some 2027 topics, such as lock-in amplifiers, may appear rarely in older papers. Prepare them from the textbook all the same.
GATE PH mocks and exam technique
Six to eight full mocks in the last five weeks is a sensible target, sat at the same hour as your real session. Use the same order of attack every time:
| Pass | What to answer |
|---|---|
| First, about 20 minutes | General Aptitude |
| Second | One-step physics: standard results, selection rules, logic gates, conservation laws |
| Third | Problems you can set up at once: partition functions, perturbation, op-amp circuits, diffraction |
| Last | Long multi-step derivations you skipped |
Guess an MCQ only after eliminating two options. MSQ and NAT answers you have worked out should always go in. For NATs, recheck powers of ten and the unit asked for, since eV against joules or nm against metres is an easy way to lose a correct answer.
GATE PH books and resources
The standard university texts are all you need, one per subject.
| Subject | Widely used texts |
|---|---|

| Mathematical Physics | Arfken, Weber and Harris, Mathematical Methods for Physicists; Mary L. Boas, Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences |
| Classical Mechanics | Herbert Goldstein, Classical Mechanics; John R. Taylor, Classical Mechanics |
| Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics | F. Reif, Fundamentals of Statistical and Thermal Physics; R. K. Pathria, Statistical Mechanics |
| Electromagnetic Theory | David J. Griffiths, Introduction to Electrodynamics |
| Optical Physics | Eugene Hecht, Optics; Ajoy Ghatak, Optics |
| Quantum Mechanics | David J. Griffiths, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics; R. Shankar, Principles of Quantum Mechanics |
| Atomic and Molecular Physics | C. N. Banwell and E. M. McCash, Fundamentals of Molecular Spectroscopy |

| Nuclear and Particle Physics | Kenneth S. Krane, Introductory Nuclear Physics; David J. Griffiths, Introduction to Elementary Particles |
| Electronics | Paul Horowitz and Winfield Hill, The Art of Electronics; M. Morris Mano, Digital Design |
IIT and IISc faculty teach most of these subjects in free NPTEL courses, which work well as lectures beside the books.
Common GATE PH mistakes
- Reading Griffiths cover to cover without solving its problems. PH rewards solved problems.
- Skipping Measurements and Electronics because they feel less like physics. Both are listed sections.
- Starting quantum mechanics with shaky residues and eigenvalue problems.
- Dropping a degeneracy, a factor of 2 from spin, a k_B or an ħ, or a power of ten in a NAT.
- Ticking an extra MSQ option on a hunch; one wrong pick zeroes the question.
Your final month before GATE PH
Four weeks before the exam, nothing new.
Two or three full mocks each week, each one reviewed for as long as it took to sit. Rework every question in your error log.
Condense standard results onto single sheets: energy levels, common partition functions, Fresnel coefficients, term symbols, semiconductor relations, nuclear models. Revisit lasers, spectroscopy and particle symmetries weekly.
Daily timed aptitude. In the last week, keep your sleep matched to your session.
After GATE PH: admissions, jobs and a second paper
A valid PH score supports applications to M.Tech, MS by research and PhD programmes, including the many IIT and IISc physics PhD routes. IIT M.Tech offers go through COAP, and NITs, IIITs and many other institutes use CCMT. IISc and several IITs run their own MS and PhD admissions. Confirm that each programme accepts the PH paper. Some public sector organisations recruit through GATE scores and name the papers they accept in their own notifications.
A GATE 2027 score remains valid for three years from the date the result is announced, which suits students who plan a research assistantship first.
PH pairs with six papers. Strong mathematicians can look at the GATE MA preparation guide. If you liked computational physics or statistics, see how to prepare for GATE DA and GATE CSE preparation. Electronics-minded physicists can try the GATE EE preparation guide, and the GATE XE guide covers engineering sciences. To weigh them all, see all 30 GATE papers or the full list of GATE preparation guides.
