How GATE XE differs from other papers
XE is Engineering Sciences. Most GATE papers are one branch, fixed. XE is a menu. Everyone answers XE0 Engineering Mathematics, and then each candidate picks two of nine optional sections that range from Fluid Mechanics to Textile Engineering and Fibre Science.
That suits anyone whose degree does not match a single core paper: a polymer technologist, a food engineer or an atmospheric science graduate can build a paper from what they studied. Mechanical and aerospace students can weigh it too, since two mechanics sections cover less ground than a whole branch paper.
Programmes that accept XE vary by institute, so read their admission pages before settling on a pair.

The GATE XE 2027 syllabus, section by section
One compulsory section, nine optional ones, and General Aptitude on top. The combined XE syllabus PDF holds all of them; print only XE0 and your two sections and use those pages as your checklist.

Section codes changed for 2027. The official papers page maps the GATE 2026 section letters A to I onto XE0 to XE8, and Textile Engineering and Fibre Science, a separate paper (TF) in GATE 2026, becomes XE9.
How the XE paper adds up to 100
Thirty marks are fixed for every XE candidate: 15 from ten General Aptitude questions and 15 from XE0. The other 70 come from your two optional sections at 35 each. All 65 questions carry 1 or 2 marks each.
Questions come as MCQs, MSQs or NATs. Only MCQs carry a penalty, 1/3 mark on a 1-mark question and 2/3 on a 2-mark one. MSQs have no partial credit; you need the exact set of correct options.
Recent GATE exams have given candidates an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and have not permitted physical ones. The 2027 information brochure will confirm what applies this time. Either way, the XE4 steam-table interpolations and XE1 friction-factor numericals are worth practising on a virtual calculator.
So 70 percent of your score rides on a choice you make.
Picking your two GATE XE sections
You click your two sections during the exam. Decide months before, and prepare exactly those two.
Begin with your degree:
| Background | Natural first choice | Sections that share ground with it |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical, aerospace, civil, naval | XE3 Solid Mechanics or XE1 Fluid Mechanics | XE4 Thermodynamics |
| Metallurgy, materials, ceramics | XE2 Materials Science | XE3 (stress, strain and failure) or XE4 (thermodynamics) |
| Chemical, polymer, plastics | XE5 Polymer Science and Engineering | XE2 (polymer structure, degradation), XE1, XE4 |
| Food technology, agricultural and dairy engineering | XE6 Food Technology | XE4 (psychrometry), XE1 (pipe flow) |
| Earth, atmospheric and ocean sciences, physics | XE7 Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences | XE1 (Navier-Stokes, vorticity), XE4 (gas laws, Clausius-Clapeyron) |
| Energy, electrical and mechanical with an energy focus | XE8 Energy Science | XE4 (cycles, efficiency, energy balances) |
| Textile technology | XE9 Textile Engineering and Fibre Science | XE5 (polymerisation, glass transition, thermal analysis) |
Then choose the partner section by overlap in the official syllabus, so that one set of ideas pays twice.
Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics both run on control volumes, conservation of mass and energy, and property relations. Fluid Mechanics and Solid Mechanics share equilibrium and momentum thinking. Materials Science and Polymer Science overlap on crystallinity, glass transition and characterisation by XRD and microscopy. Polymer Science and Textiles share fibre-forming polymers, melt and solution spinning, and DSC, DMA and TGA. Thermodynamics pairs with Food Technology through psychrometry, with Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences through adiabatic processes and Clausius-Clapeyron, and with Energy Science through cycles and efficiency.
Never pick a section because its past questions look short. Pick one whose textbook you could finish twice.
Where to start in XE
XE0 starts on day one. Your sections lean on it: ODEs for vibrations, vector calculus for fluid kinematics, statistics for testing.
Alongside it, begin the foundation of your stronger section. In XE1 that means kinematics, control volumes and Bernoulli. In XE3, free-body diagrams and stress transformation. XE4 starts with properties and the two laws, XE2 with crystallography and phase diagrams. The more descriptive sections, XE5, XE6 and XE9, start with chemistry and structure, because processing and testing topics make sense only after them.
Bring in the second section around week four, beginning with whatever it shares with the first.
A 14-week GATE XE plan
About four hours a day. Section A is your stronger choice, Section B the second.
| Weeks | Focus | Finish the block with |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | XE0 linear algebra and calculus; Section A foundations | Past-paper XE0 questions on these topics |
| 2 | XE0 ODEs and vector calculus; Section A core topics | A short timed test on Section A |
| 3 | Section A core topics continued; XE0 complex variables | Section A past-paper questions |
| 4 | Section A remaining topics; start Section B foundations | First pass of Section A complete |
| 5 | Section B core topics; XE0 PDEs | Section B past-paper questions |
| 6 | Section B core topics continued; XE0 probability and statistics | A timed mixed test |
| 7 | Section B remaining topics; XE0 numerical methods | First pass of Section B complete |
| 8 | Section A second pass: numericals and weak areas | Error-free set of Section A numericals |
| 9 | Section B second pass: numericals and weak areas | Error-free set of Section B numericals |
| 10 | Shared topics between your sections; descriptive topics | One-page summary sheets |
| 11 | Full XE0 revision; past papers section by section | Error log sorted by section |
| 12 | Full past papers, timed (GA + XE0 + your two sections) | Two complete papers analysed |
| 13 | Full-length mocks (3) and weak-topic repair | Updated error log |
| 14 | Mocks (2 or 3), formula sheets, light revision | A calm last week |
Hold back one session a week from week 3 for older topics.
Fitting XE around a semester or a job
Working or still in classes? Spread the same blocks across 22 to 26 weeks. Evenings can rotate between XE0, Section A and Section B, and Saturdays can be a timed set from all three. If this semester's course happens to cover a section topic, such as heat treatment or polymer rheology, prepare that topic now while the lectures are fresh.
Preparing each GATE XE section
XE0 Engineering Mathematics
Standard question types, so aim for two or three minutes each. Eigenvalues, exact ODEs, Laplace-equation separation and a numerical integration rule on the calculator all recur.
XE1 Fluid Mechanics
Manometry and forces on submerged surfaces, Reynolds transport theorem, Bernoulli for venturi and Pitot tubes, Couette and Poiseuille flow, Buckingham Pi, Moody-chart losses, stream function and potential flow, and boundary layer thickness. A typical NAT gives pipe data and asks for the head loss or pumping power.
XE2 Materials Science
Miller indices and packing fractions, dislocations and Burgers vectors, the lever rule on a binary diagram, Fick's laws, TTT and CCT diagrams, strengthening mechanisms, band theory, Bragg's law with structure factor, and the Nernst equation. Students confuse TTT and CCT readings; practise both on the same steel.
XE3 Solid Mechanics
Free-body diagrams, friction, trusses, Mohr's circle, failure theories, bending and shear stress, deflection, one-degree indeterminacy with Castigliano, torsion, Euler buckling and single-degree-of-freedom vibration. Principal stresses and a damped natural frequency are standard NATs.
XE4 Thermodynamics
Fluency with steam tables decides this section. Practise the first law for closed systems and control volumes, entropy generation and isentropic efficiency, Maxwell relations and Clapeyron, every listed cycle, and psychrometric processes on the chart.
XE5 Polymer Science and Engineering
Polymerisation kinetics and reactivity ratios, number- and weight-average molecular weight, crystallinity and transitions, named polymers and rubbers, blends, compounding, rheology with viscoelastic models, processing and test standards. Tabulate the named polymers with structure and use.
XE6 Food Technology
Carbohydrate, protein and lipid chemistry, nutrition, D, Z and F values, spoilage organisms and pathogens, commodity processing, packaging, food standards and unit operations. Thermal process time from D and Z values and mass balances in drying or evaporation are the common numericals.
XE7 Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
Hydrostatic equation, lapse rates and stability, radiation balance, geostrophic and gradient wind, vorticity, Ekman and Sverdrup transport, waves and tides, and ocean biogeochemistry.
XE8 Energy Science
Q-values and decay, solar geometry and collector efficiency, PV fill factor and system sizing, the Betz limit, hydro turbines, battery parameters, and the economics formulas: payback, NPV, IRR, capital recovery factor and levelised cost.
XE9 Textile Engineering and Fibre Science
Fibre structure and spinning, the yarn route from blowroom to ring and newer spinning systems, loom motions, knitting, Peirce's cloth geometry, testing, and dyeing and finishing.
General Aptitude
Fifteen marks for timed practice and little else.
Finding your section in past GATE XE papers
Official XE papers and answer keys are on the GATE 2026 archive at IIT Guwahati and on each earlier year's official site.
Solve only XE0 and your two sections. Older papers label sections by letter, not XE code, so match them by name. For textiles, use the separate TF paper from 2026 and earlier.
Go topic by topic first; in the final month, sit whole papers (GA, XE0 and your two sections) in three hours. Redo every mistake a week later.
Mocks and exam-day order for XE
Aim for six or more full mocks before the exam, each restricted to GA, XE0 and your two sections.
On the day, select the two sections you prepared. Never switch because another section's first question looks easy; the rest of it may not be. Do General Aptitude in about 20 minutes, then XE0, which is predictable and settles nerves. Take your sections in two passes, concept questions first and long numericals after.
Guess on MCQs only after ruling out two options. Always enter a worked NAT or MSQ answer. Check units and decimal places on every NAT before you move on.
Books for XE0 and each optional section
One book per section, read fully.

NPTEL has free IIT and IISc courses on most of these subjects.
Pairing XE with a second paper
Ten papers may sit beside XE in 2027: AE, CE, CH, CY, DA, ME, MT, NM, PH and PI. Choose one that reuses your two sections.
If you chose XE1 and XE3, the mechanics overlap with the GATE ME preparation guide is large, and the GATE AE preparation guide suits those leaning towards flight and structures. Naval architecture students can compare how to prepare for GATE NM, and production students how to prepare for GATE PI. Civil graduates using XE1 or XE3 should read the GATE CE preparation guide.
XE2 students have an obvious partner in the GATE MT preparation guide. With XE4 or XE5 from a chemical background, look at how to prepare for GATE CH. Science graduates have two more options: the GATE PH preparation guide for physics, especially alongside XE7, and the GATE CY preparation guide for chemistry.
Students who enjoy XE0's statistics and numerical methods sometimes add data science. The GATE DA preparation guide shows how much of that paper would be new to you.
Common GATE XE mistakes
Choosing sections late, or carrying three "just in case". The third one steals time from the two that count.
Working from an old syllabus. Codes changed for 2027, and textiles is now XE9 inside XE.
Neglecting XE0. Fifteen compulsory marks, very learnable.
Skipping the descriptive lines in your sections: standards, equipment, test methods and processes all appear.
Sign and unit slips in mechanics, fluids and thermodynamics numericals. Guessing MSQs, where one wrong tick costs the whole question.
Final month before XE
Close new topics about four weeks out.
Mocks now come two or three a week, and every question in your error log gets a second attempt. XE0 and each of your sections deserve a single-page sheet you can scan in ten minutes. Short GA sets daily. Match your waking hours to the session during the final week.
Using a GATE XE score
GATE 2027 scores are valid for three years from the date the result is announced. That window spans several admission rounds.
Which programmes accept XE differs by institute. IITs make M.Tech offers through COAP; NITs, IIITs and many others admit through CCMT; IISc and several IITs handle MS and PhD admissions themselves. Where a public sector organisation recruits through GATE, its own notification says whether XE is accepted.
