What is GATE NM?
NM is the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering paper. It is the GATE route into M.Tech, MS and PhD programmes in naval architecture, ocean engineering and related areas.
Part of it is a mechanical engineer's toolkit: statics, strength of materials, vibrations, machine design and thermodynamics. Part is naval architecture proper, from hydrostatics and stability through resistance, propellers, manoeuvring, seakeeping, hull structures and offshore platforms. The rest is marine engineering, meaning diesel engines, steam and gas turbines, boilers and the auxiliary systems that keep a ship running.
Naval architecture, ocean and marine engineering students are the natural takers.

How the GATE NM paper is structured
Sixty-five questions for 100 marks in three hours, each worth 1 or 2 marks. General Aptitude gives 10 questions and 15 marks. The other 55 questions carry 85 marks, and the 13 marks of Engineering Mathematics among them are set specifically for NM, so a numerical integration question may well ask for a waterplane area.
Everyone answers the same paper. NM has no optional sections, so nothing is chosen at registration or in the hall. GATE does not say how subject marks divide among the five sections.
Formats are MCQ (one right option), MSQ (one or more right options, scored only when your selection is exactly right) and NAT (type a number). A wrong MCQ costs 1/3 mark if it is worth 1 mark and 2/3 if worth 2. Wrong MSQ and NAT answers cost nothing.
Physical calculators have not been allowed in recent GATE exams, which supplied a virtual scientific calculator on screen instead. Expect the GATE 2027 information brochure to confirm this year's rules, and practise on a virtual calculator meanwhile.
Where to begin with GATE NM
Naval architecture borrows heavily from mechanics and fluids, so those come first.
Mathematics runs alongside Engineering Mechanics in the opening weeks.
Hydrostatics leads to stability, because once buoyancy, the centre of buoyancy and the metacentre are clear, the step to trim, free surface effect and GZ curves is a short one.
Beam theory leads to hull strength. Bending, shear and torsion are exactly what the hull girder and stiffened plates need.
Boundary layers lead to resistance. Skin friction, dimensional analysis and aerofoil theory explain frictional resistance, the Froude extrapolation and propeller blade sections.
Potential flow and waves lead to seakeeping, since added mass and encounter frequency sit at the centre of ship motions.
Thermodynamics leads to marine engineering. Auxiliary machinery, being descriptive, can be read a little each week from early on.
General Aptitude wants a short timed set every other day, starting now.

Preparing for GATE NM around classes or shipyard work
Many NM candidates are in final year or at a shipyard, a classification society or a design office. Give it 2 to 3 hours on weekdays and longer stretches at weekends, and spread the 14-week plan over 24 to 28 weeks.
Weekdays get one subject each, and weekends get mixed past-paper questions drawn from several sections at once, which is how the real paper feels. If your semester includes ship resistance or hull structures, move those GATE blocks forward so lectures and revision reinforce each other. Having walked through an engine room makes bilge systems easier to recall than any diagram.
Subject-by-subject GATE NM strategy
Engineering Mathematics
These are dependable marks. Get each standard question type down to two or three minutes. Spend extra care on trapezoidal and Simpson's rules, because hydrostatic particulars are computed with exactly those methods.
Applied Mechanics and Structures
Draw a free-body diagram every time. Make SFD and BMD sign conventions, Mohr's circle, torsion and Euler buckling solid. In vibrations, natural frequency, damping ratio and multi degree of freedom response matter, since they return as hull and shaft vibration.
Fluid Mechanics and Marine Hydrodynamics
Cover control-volume analysis, Bernoulli, pipe flow and boundary layers, including displacement and momentum thickness and the conditions for separation. Then potential flow, Kutta-Joukowski lift, added mass, slender-body theory and linear waves. Froude and Reynolds scaling deserve particular attention. Why both cannot be matched in a towing tank explains all of model testing.
Stability and Trim
The heart of naval architecture. You should move fluently between KB, BM, KG and GM, correct for free surface, interpret the inclining experiment, read a GZ curve and recognise an angle of loll. Questions are usually short calculations, and a wrong reference point (keel, waterline or centre of gravity) is the commonest way to lose them.
Resistance and Propulsion
Learn the resistance components, form factor and model-to-ship extrapolation, then propeller geometry and theories, wake fraction, thrust deduction, and the chain of efficiencies from open-water to quasi-propulsive. Students regularly swap hull efficiency and relative rotative efficiency. Write each definition out until you cannot confuse them.
Ship Manoeuvring and Motions
Equations of motion, stability indexes, standard manoeuvres such as the turning circle and zig-zag, rudders, wave spectra, encounter frequency and the six degrees of freedom.
Ship Structures and Strength
Framing systems, loads in a seaway, hull girder bending using the midship section modulus, stiffened plates, ultimate strength and fatigue. Beam theory from Section 2 carries nearly all the arithmetic.
Oceanography, Offshore Structures and Ports
Mostly descriptive; one comparison table of platform types with mooring notes covers it.
Thermodynamics and Marine Engineering
First and second laws, entropy, air standard cycles, IC engine combustion, refrigeration and air conditioning supply the calculations. Marine diesels, turbines, boilers, engine dynamics and auxiliaries are largely descriptive, with some numericals on power and fuel consumption. Give each system a page and include MARPOL, EEDI and SEEMP, which the syllabus names.
General Aptitude
Fifteen marks; regular timed sets.
GATE NM previous year papers
Recent NM papers and their answer keys sit on the official GATE 2026 download page hosted by IIT Guwahati.
NM has a smaller pool of past papers than the big GATE papers, so treat each one as precious. During the plan, solve them by subject: all the stability questions after week 6, all the resistance questions after week 8. Keep at least two complete papers untouched for the final month and sit them in a three-hour slot.
Log each wrong answer with its cause and re-solve it a week later. Prepare rarely asked 2027 lines from the textbook anyway.
Timed practice and exam technique for GATE NM
Do 6 to 8 full timed papers in the last five weeks, at the hour your session runs. Since dedicated NM mocks are scarce, your saved past papers are the best mocks you have.
Settle on an order in advance: General Aptitude first, about 20 minutes, then a quick sweep of one-minute conceptual questions on offshore platforms, structures and marine machinery, and then the numericals you trust yourself on, such as GM and trim, resistance scaling, beams and cycles. Long problems wait for the end.
Guess an MCQ only after eliminating two options. Submit any MSQ or NAT you have worked through, because they cost nothing if wrong. In NAT answers, check tonnes against kilonewtons, metres against millimetres, and the number of decimal places asked for.

Mistakes that cost GATE NM marks
Thinking of NM as naval architecture alone. Mechanics, structures, fluids and thermodynamics fill a large part of the syllabus.
Skipping marine engineering because it reads like a catalogue. Each listed system can produce a quick question.
Losing track of reference points in stability, so that a height measured from the waterline gets treated as one from the keel.
Postponing Engineering Mathematics, which is a fixed 13 marks and very learnable.
Guessing on MSQs, and buying a shelf of books you never finish.
Final four weeks before GATE NM
No new topics in the last four weeks. Sit two or three full timed papers a week and give each one as much time again in review. Work through your error log. Condense stability, resistance and propulsion, hull girder strength, vibrations and thermodynamic cycles into one page each. Do a timed General Aptitude set every day.
Use the last week to settle your sleep and rehearse at your session time.
After GATE NM: M.Tech, research and second papers
A valid score lets you apply for M.Tech, MS (by research) and PhD programmes, including those in ocean engineering and naval architecture. IITs make M.Tech offers through COAP. For NITs, IIITs and many others the route is CCMT, and several institutes hold separate MS and PhD admissions. Each institute decides which GATE papers it accepts. Some public sector organisations also use GATE scores in recruitment, each through its own notification.
A GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced. That window matters if you plan a year at sea or in a yard before going back to study.
If you are weighing a second paper, NM pairs with CE, ME or XE. ME covers much of the mechanics, design and thermodynamics in Sections 2 and 5, and our GATE ME study plan shows what it adds. XE lets you combine its common mathematics section with optional sections such as Fluid Mechanics; the GATE XE section guide explains the choice. Offshore and port work leans towards civil, which makes preparing for GATE CE worth a look. To compare every code, browse all 30 GATE papers or the full list of GATE preparation guides.
