What GATE MT covers
MT is the Metallurgical Engineering paper. People use its score for M.Tech, MS and PhD admissions in metallurgy and materials at the IITs, IISc, NITs and elsewhere, and some public sector organisations also look at GATE scores when hiring.
Its scope is the whole undergraduate metallurgy course, from thermodynamics and kinetics through extraction and steelmaking to physical metallurgy, manufacturing and non-metallic materials.
Because the paper borrows from physics, chemistry and process engineering at once, the questions favour a student who can say why a slag desulphurises, or why a fine-grained steel is stronger. A description of the plant layout will rarely be enough.

Inside the GATE MT question paper
Each of the 65 questions is worth 1 or 2 marks. General Aptitude supplies 10 questions and 15 marks, and it is identical in style across GATE papers. The remaining 85 marks belong to MT. Thirteen of them come from Engineering Mathematics questions written for this paper, which leaves 72 marks across the seven metallurgy sections.
You will see MCQs with a single right option, MSQs where one or more options can be right, and NATs where you key in a number. Penalties apply to MCQs only (1/3 for a wrong 1-mark answer, 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark one). MSQs give nothing unless your set of choices is exactly right.
Recent GATE exams have supplied an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and kept physical ones out. The 2027 information brochure will confirm the rule. Practise on a virtual one anyway; a Nernst log term is clumsy on it at first.
Conceptual questions ask about microstructures, mechanisms and process routes. Numerical ones ask for a free energy change, a phase fraction from the lever rule, a diffusion depth, a heat balance or a critical crack length. MSQs tend to sit on the conceptual side, so vague familiarity with a topic will not be enough.
Order of study for GATE MT
Thermodynamics goes first, paired with Engineering Mathematics. Free energy, activity and equilibrium constants feed phase diagrams, Ellingham diagrams, extraction, slag chemistry and corrosion. The maths is a fixed 13 marks.
Phase diagrams lead naturally into Physical Metallurgy. Once G–x curves make sense, nucleation, precipitation and heat treatment stop feeling like separate chapters.
Read crystal defects and dislocations before Mechanical Behaviour. Dislocation theory is the bridge between the microstructure and strengthening, creep and fracture.
Transport and rate processes come next. Diffusion, conduction and kinetics show up again in solidification, carburising, continuous casting and refining.
Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy, one of the broadest sections in the official syllabus, runs from beneficiation to secondary steelmaking and needs steady reading over several weeks.
Save the compact Manufacturing Processes and Non-Metallic Materials sections for nearer the exam. Start General Aptitude in week one, a few short sessions a week.
Fourteen weeks to GATE MT
Written for four to five focused hours daily, assuming you met these subjects in college. Short on time? Lengthen each row.
| Week | Read | Prove it by solving |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Laws, free energies, Maxwell's relations; linear algebra | First and second law past-paper questions |
| 2 | Solutions, phase rule, binary diagrams, lever rule, G–x curves | Phase-fraction numericals on Fe–C and isomorphous systems |
| 3 | Equilibrium constant, activity, Ellingham and stability diagrams, electrochemistry; calculus | Which oxide reduces which, and Nernst potentials |
| 4 | Defects, XRD, microscopy, SEM, diffusion in solids | Indexing a cubic pattern; a carburising depth from Fick's second law |
| 5 | Nucleation and solidification; ODEs | Critical radius and barrier; constitutional supercooling criteria |
| 6 | Solid-state transformations, heat treatment, TTT and CCT, corrosion | A timed mixed test on Sections 2 and 5 |
| 7 | Elasticity, yield criteria, dislocations, strengthening | Mohr's circle, Tresca versus von Mises, Hall-Petch |
| 8 | Fracture, fatigue, creep; probability and statistics | Critical crack size from K_IC; creep activation energy |
| 9 | Transport and rate processes; vector calculus | Conduction, mass transfer coefficients, Arrhenius plots |
| 10 | Mineral processing; pyro, hydro and electrometallurgy of Al, Cu, Ti, Zn | Heat and material balances |
| 11 | Ironmaking, steelmaking, ladle work, continuous casting; numerical methods | Blast furnace balances and slag basicity |
| 12 | Manufacturing; polymers, ceramics, composites, electronic and magnetic properties | Isostrain modulus, radius ratio, molecular weight averages |
| 13 | Three full mocks and repairs | An error log sorted by section |
| 14 | Three more mocks, formula sheets | A quiet final week |
From week 3, set one session a week aside for older sections. Eight sections fade fast without it.
GATE MT with a final-year project or a plant job
On two or three hours a weekday plus longer weekends, spread the plan over 24 to 28 weeks.
Keep weekdays for one section and weekends for mixed past-paper questions. A fixed 90-minute daily slot beats a marathon Sunday.
A semester course on phase transformations is the right moment for those GATE topics. If you work near a blast furnace, converter, ladle furnace or caster, tie each syllabus line to the equipment you see, and the process section becomes much easier to recall.
Section-by-section approach to GATE MT
Engineering Mathematics
Linear algebra, calculus, ODEs and probability are dependable marks. The MT list also has analysis of experimental data and linear least squares, so fit a straight line by hand a few times. Do the numerical methods on a virtual calculator.
Metallurgical Thermodynamics
This section holds the paper together. Move freely between enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy, handle ideal and regular solutions, and convert between activity and concentration. Read Ellingham diagrams until you can say at a glance which oxide is more stable, what reduces what, and at what temperature the lines cross. Apply the lever rule to every phase diagram you meet.
Transport Phenomena and Rate Processes
Split it into momentum, heat and mass. Learn shell balances, 1-D steady conduction, Stefan-Boltzmann and Fick's laws, and the physical meaning of each dimensionless number. For kinetics, draw Arrhenius plots and link oxidation kinetics to parabolic scale growth.
Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy
Treat every metal as a chain from ore to cast product: beneficiation, reduction, refining, casting. Learn the main steps and chemistry for aluminium, copper, titanium and zinc. In iron and steel, put your effort into blast furnace thermodynamics, heat and material balance, slag basicity, and the job of each refining step (deoxidation, degassing, desulphurisation, inclusion control). Redraw flowsheets from memory.
Physical Metallurgy
The most concept-dense part of MT. You need nucleation theory (critical radius and energy barrier), solidification and constitutional supercooling, precipitation and coarsening, martensite, and the link from TTT and CCT diagrams to the microstructure you would see. Practise Bragg's law and indexing of cubic patterns. Corrosion ties back to the electrochemistry in Section 2.
Mechanical Behaviour of Materials
Mohr's circle, Tresca and von Mises, dislocation types and reactions, Burgers vectors, Hall-Petch, Griffith and LEFM, fatigue crack growth, and creep with stress exponent and activation energy. Once the idea is clear, most questions are short calculations.
Manufacturing Processes
Gating and riser design, forming defects, welding metallurgy (the heat-affected zone, defects in steels and aluminium alloys), compaction and sintering, and how each NDT method works and where it is used. A one-page comparison of the six NDT methods saves a lot of rereading.
Materials Science and Non-Metallic Materials
Bonding, radius ratio rules, Schottky and Frenkel defects, number and weight average molecular weight, isostrain and isostress rules, band gaps and magnetic behaviour. Small and formula-based; one revision sheet covers it.
General Aptitude
Fifteen marks of verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial questions, to be finished in about 20 minutes. Practise against a clock.
Working through GATE MT past papers
For a sense of how MT questions are phrased, use the official papers. Recent MT papers and answer keys are in the GATE 2026 official download archive at IIT Guwahati.
After each block of the plan, solve that section's questions from several recent papers. Keep whole papers for the last month, sat in one three-hour stretch.
Grade yourself against the official key, log every miss with its reason, and redo those questions a week later. If a 2027 syllabus line has hardly appeared in past papers, prepare it from the textbook anyway.
GATE MT mocks and time management
Aim for six to eight full mocks over the final five weeks, sat at the hour your session will run.
In the paper itself, General Aptitude first takes about 20 minutes and gets 15 marks banked. Then sweep for one-minute conceptual questions: microstructure identification, process routes, NDT, polymers and ceramics. On the next pass, do numericals whose method you know straight away, such as lever rule, Fick's law, Nernst, heat balance or fracture toughness. Long calculations wait for the end.
Wrong MCQs cost marks, so guess only after eliminating two options. NATs carry no penalty; type in every answer you have reached. Watch kJ against J and K against °C, and round as instructed.

Taking XE alongside GATE MT
MT candidates have one second-paper option on the official list: XE, Engineering Sciences. XE has a compulsory Engineering Mathematics section, XE0, and you answer two optional sections from a list that includes Materials Science (XE2), Solid Mechanics (XE3) and Thermodynamics (XE4). Those three overlap with Sections 8, 6 and 2 of MT, so a metallurgy student can often pick sections that reuse most of the work already done. Read the GATE XE 2027 preparation guide to see how the sections are marked before you decide.
Habits that cost GATE MT marks
Learning extractive metallurgy as a list of plant facts is the most common one. Blast furnace and steelmaking questions frequently turn on a free energy or a heat balance.
Slow Ellingham and phase diagram reading costs time. Drill it.
Some students skip Section 8 because polymers and ceramics feel outside metallurgy, but it is on the syllabus and quick to learn. Others leave Engineering Mathematics to the end and then rush 13 very gettable marks.
On MSQs, a single wrong tick sinks the question. And five books per subject usually means finishing none.
The final four weeks before GATE MT
About four weeks out, stop opening new topics.
Sit two or three full mocks each week and give each one an equal block of review time afterwards. Clear your error log by solving every question in it again.
Make one formula sheet per section. Redraw the iron-carbon diagram, a TTT curve, an Ellingham diagram and a steelmaking flowsheet from memory every few days. Do timed General Aptitude daily. In the final week, keep regular sleep and study at the hours your session will run.
What a GATE MT score leads to
A GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced, so you can use it in later admission or recruitment rounds too.
For M.Tech, the IITs make offers through COAP, while NITs, IIITs and many other institutes admit through CCMT. IISc and several IITs run their own MS and PhD admissions. Some public sector organisations recruit using GATE scores and publish separate notifications stating eligible papers, cut-offs and process; read each one yourself.
If you are weighing MT against a neighbouring discipline, look through all 30 GATE papers or browse the other GATE preparation guides.
