What is GATE DA?

GATE DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) is the newest GATE paper. It was first held in 2024 and is aimed at students who want an M.Tech, MS or PhD in data science, machine learning or AI at the IITs, IISc and other institutes that accept GATE scores.

Unlike GATE CSE, which tests the whole of core computer science, DA concentrates on the mathematics and computing behind data science: probability and statistics, linear algebra, calculus and optimization, programming and data structures, databases and warehousing, machine learning and AI.

It suits you if you enjoy maths-heavy problem solving and want to work in ML or AI. If you prefer systems topics such as operating systems, networks and compilers, GATE CSE may fit you better. You can also look at taking both (see the FAQ below).

GATE DA vs GATE CSE: which should you take?

Many students weigh up DA against CSE. Both share General Aptitude and some maths and programming, but they test quite different skills. Based on the official GATE 2027 syllabi:

GATE DAGATE CSE
Subjects7, focused on maths, ML and AI10, covering core computer science
Marks split15 General Aptitude + 85 subject (maths is part of the subjects)15 General Aptitude + 13 Engineering Mathematics + 72 subject
ProgrammingPythonC
Unique to this paperStatistics and hypothesis testing, machine learning, AI, data warehousingDigital logic, computer organization, theory of computation, compilers, operating systems, networks
In bothProbability, linear algebra, calculus, data structures, algorithms, databases

Pick DA if you enjoy mathematics and want to work in ML or AI. Pick CSE if you prefer systems and theory, or want the widest range of M.Tech programmes. Because some subjects overlap, it is possible to prepare for both, but check the official two-paper combination list before you register. Compare the full lists on the GATE DA syllabus and GATE CSE syllabus pages.

GATE DA 2027 syllabus at a glance

The official GATE 2027 DA syllabus has seven subjects and is unchanged from 2026. Here is what each one is really testing. Each subject links to its full topic list.

  • Probability and Statistics: counting, conditional probability and Bayes' theorem, random variables and the standard distributions, the central limit theorem, and hypothesis tests (z, t and chi-squared).
  • Linear Algebra: vector spaces, special matrices, solving linear systems, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, rank and nullity, and the LU and singular value decompositions.
  • Calculus and Optimization: single-variable calculus, Taylor series, and finding maxima and minima.
  • Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms: Python, core data structures, searching and sorting, divide and conquer, and basic graph algorithms.
  • Database Management and Warehousing: the relational model, SQL and normal forms, plus data preparation and data warehouse modelling.
  • Machine Learning: regression and classification models, model validation, neural networks, clustering and PCA.
  • Artificial Intelligence: search, logic, and reasoning under uncertainty.

General Aptitude (verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial) is common to every GATE paper. See the complete GATE DA syllabus for every topic and the marks split.

How the GATE DA paper is built

Knowing the layout of the paper helps you plan your time. The official GATE DA 2025 paper (organised by IIT Roorkee) followed this structure:

QuestionsSectionMarks eachTotal
Q.1 – Q.5General Aptitude15
Q.6 – Q.10General Aptitude210
Q.11 – Q.35Data Science and AI125
Q.36 – Q.65Data Science and AI260

Three things stand out from that paper:

  • Two-mark questions are worth 70 of the 100 marks. Speed on easy one-mark questions matters, but the multi-step two-mark problems decide your rank.
  • Around a dozen questions were numerical (NAT). There are no options to guess from, but also no negative marking, so always attempt them.
  • Questions mix subjects. A single question can combine probability with linear algebra, or an algorithm with its time complexity. Strong fundamentals beat memorised formulas.

Which subjects to study first

The DA subjects build on each other. Studying them in the right order means you learn each topic once instead of going back to fix gaps.

  1. Probability and Statistics, and Linear Algebra. These are the language of machine learning. Regression, PCA, naive Bayes and most of ML are applications of these two subjects.
  2. Calculus and Optimization. Short, and it gives you the tools for gradient-based ideas used later.
  3. Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms. Independent of the maths, so you can run it in parallel. Practise reading Python code and tracing its output by hand.
  4. Machine Learning. Much easier once the maths is in place.
  5. Database Management and Warehousing, and Artificial Intelligence. Both are fairly self-contained and work well in the second half of your plan.

Keep General Aptitude running alongside everything: 20–30 minutes a few times a week is enough for most students.

A 14-week plan for GATE DA 2027

If you are reading this in late October 2026, the first exam day (6 February 2027) is roughly 14 weeks away. This is an example plan, not an official timetable. Adjust it to what you already know: if you have studied ML at college, shorten that block and give the time to your weakest subject.

WeeksFocusGoal by the end
1–3Probability and Statistics; Linear AlgebraSolve standard problems without notes
4Calculus and Optimization; start Programming and DSAMaxima and minima, Taylor series, basic Python tracing
5–6Programming, Data Structures and AlgorithmsSorting, searching and graph algorithms with their complexity
7–8Machine LearningEvery model in the syllabus: how it works, its assumptions, how to evaluate it
9Database Management and WarehousingSQL queries, normal forms, warehouse schemas
10Artificial IntelligenceSearch, logic and inference under uncertainty
11–12Previous year questions, subject by subjectEvery DA PYQ attempted and reviewed
13–14Full-length mock tests and revisionAt least 4–6 timed mocks, each reviewed the same day

If you are starting for GATE 2028 instead, stretch the same order over 6–9 months and add a second round of revision before the PYQ phase.

Preparing alongside college or a job

Most GATE DA aspirants are final-year students or early in their careers, so time is the real constraint. A few habits make a big difference:

  • Fix a daily slot. Two focused hours at the same time every day beat a long session once a week. Protect that slot as you would a class or meeting.
  • Use weekends for depth. Keep weekdays for new concepts and short practice sets; use weekends for longer problem sets, revision and, later, full mocks.
  • Work in small units. Break each subject into topics from the syllabus and tick them off. Seeing steady progress keeps motivation up over months.
  • Reuse what you already study. If your coursework covers probability, linear algebra, databases or ML, solve GATE-style questions on those topics while they are fresh.
  • Look after your sleep. Tired study is slow study. A rested hour is worth more than a late-night two.

Subject-by-subject strategy

Probability and Statistics

Get completely comfortable with conditional probability and Bayes' theorem, and know each standard distribution's mean, variance and when it applies. For the statistics part, understand what a confidence interval and each test actually measure, not just the formula. Many questions are short calculations where a clear method saves minutes.

Linear Algebra

Focus on rank, null space, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and properties of special matrices (projection, orthogonal, idempotent). Know how eigenvalues relate to the trace and determinant, and what the SVD tells you about a matrix. Practise by hand with small matrices: there is no software in the exam.

Calculus and Optimization

The syllabus is only single-variable calculus, so aim for full marks here. Practise limits, derivatives, Taylor expansions and finding maxima and minima quickly and accurately.

Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms

Expect to read Python code and predict its output, and to reason about data structures and algorithm complexity. Trace code line by line on paper, including edge cases such as empty lists and recursion depth. Know the best, average and worst cases of every sorting and searching algorithm in the syllabus.

Database Management and Warehousing

Write SQL by hand until joins, grouping and nested queries feel natural. Learn functional dependencies and normal forms carefully: they are precise and easy to get wrong. The warehousing part (star and snowflake schemas, concept hierarchies, measures) is short and scoring once you learn the vocabulary.

Machine Learning

For every model in the syllabus, be able to answer: what problem it solves, how it is trained, what its assumptions are, and how it fails. Understand the bias–variance trade-off and cross-validation well, because they connect many questions. Work small numerical examples (one step of k-means, a tiny decision tree, a 2D PCA) by hand.

Artificial Intelligence

Practise search algorithms on small graphs, converting statements into propositional and predicate logic, and simple Bayesian network inference. These questions reward careful, step-by-step working.

General Aptitude

Fifteen marks that need little new study. Practise reading-comprehension, grammar and simple numerical reasoning under time pressure, and aim to finish this section quickly and accurately.

The full GATE DA syllabus lists every topic for each subject.

How to use previous year questions

Previous year questions (PYQs) are the most reliable guide to what GATE actually asks. Because DA started in 2024, there are only a few DA papers so far, so use every one of them properly.

  • First pass, by subject. After finishing a subject, attempt all its DA PYQs without a time limit. Mark every question you got wrong or guessed.
  • Second pass, as full papers. In the last weeks, attempt each DA paper as a timed 3-hour test.
  • Borrow from related papers. For the maths subjects and programming, GATE CSE, Mathematics and Statistics papers contain good practice questions on the same topics.
  • Learn from every mistake. Write down why you got it wrong: a concept gap, a calculation slip or misreading the question. Each needs a different fix.

Official question papers and answer keys are published on each year's GATE website. GATEiit is adding solved GATE DA PYQs topic by topic; you will find them linked from each GATE DA syllabus subject page.

Mock tests and exam-day technique

You have 180 minutes for 65 questions, a little under 3 minutes each. Mock tests train you to use that time well.

  • Use the GATE virtual calculator. Physical calculators are not allowed; the exam provides an on-screen scientific calculator. Practise with a similar one so it does not slow you down on the day.
  • Do two rounds. In round one, answer everything you can solve quickly and mark the rest. In round two, return to the marked questions.
  • Treat question types differently. NAT and MSQ have no negative marking, so attempt them. MSQs give no partial credit, so select only options you are sure of. For MCQs, guess only when you can eliminate options, because wrong answers cost marks.
  • Review each mock the same day. A mock you do not analyse teaches you very little.

Best resources for GATE DA 2027

You do not need many books. Pick one good source per subject and finish it. Widely used standard textbooks include:

  • Probability and Statistics: Introduction to Probability by Blitzstein and Hwang
  • Linear Algebra: Introduction to Linear Algebra by Gilbert Strang
  • Algorithms: Introduction to Algorithms by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest and Stein
  • Databases: Database System Concepts by Silberschatz, Korth and Sudarshan
  • Machine Learning: An Introduction to Statistical Learning by James, Witten, Hastie and Tibshirani
  • Artificial Intelligence: Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach by Russell and Norvig

Free NPTEL courses from IIT faculty cover most of these subjects and are useful if you prefer video lectures. Whatever you use, always check it against the official syllabus: books cover far more than GATE asks.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Collecting resources instead of finishing them. One book or course per subject, completed, beats five half-read.
  • Skipping the maths to start ML early. ML questions are mostly probability and linear algebra in disguise.
  • Watching solutions instead of solving. Attempt a question properly before you look at any solution.
  • Leaving General Aptitude to the end. It is 15 easy marks only if you have practised under time pressure.
  • Taking the first mock too late. Start full-length mocks at least four weeks before the exam.
  • Trusting unofficial dates or syllabus copies. Always confirm on the official GATE 2027 website.

The last 30 days and exam day

  • Stop starting new topics about three weeks before your exam date; revise instead.
  • Keep a one-page formula and mistakes sheet per subject and read it daily.
  • Take a timed mock every few days at the same time of day as your exam session.
  • Download your admit card as soon as it is released and check the centre location in advance.
  • On the day, carry your admit card and an original valid photo ID, and arrive early.

Follow the official instructions on the admit card; they override anything here.

What you can do after qualifying GATE DA

A good GATE DA score opens M.Tech, MS (by research) and PhD admissions in data science, AI and related areas. IITs make M.Tech offers through the COAP portal; NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes admit through CCMT counselling. IISc and some institutes run their own processes. Check each institute's admission page for the GATE papers it accepts.

Some organisations use GATE scores for recruitment. Each publishes its own list of accepted papers, so read every notification carefully.
