What is GATE AE?
AE is the Aerospace Engineering paper. It tests the four things an aerospace undergraduate spends four years on: how air moves over a wing, how an aircraft flies and stays stable, how a thin-skinned structure carries its loads, and how engines and rockets make thrust. Space dynamics sits alongside flight mechanics.
Those topics feed each other. A drag polar becomes the start of a range calculation; shock relations reappear in intakes and nozzles.
Aerospace and aeronautical students are the obvious takers. Mechanical students who liked fluids, thermodynamics and vibrations also sit AE, because the base is shared; they mostly need to add airfoil theory, stability and thin-walled structures.

The GATE AE 2027 syllabus and its Core Topics
Five sections make up the 2027 AE syllabus, with General Aptitude added as in every paper. Keep the official AE syllabus PDF open while you plan.
One feature sets AE apart. Every section is divided into Core Topics and Special Topics, and the official note says each section of the paper will draw at least 90% of its questions from Core Topics and at most 10% from Special Topics.
Section 1: Engineering Mathematics
Core: linear algebra (vectors, matrices, rank, eigenvalues), calculus (single and several variables, gradient, divergence and curl, line, surface and volume integrals, Stokes, Gauss and Green theorems), differential equations (first order and constant-coefficient linear ODEs, wave, Laplace and heat equations by separation of variables) and numerical methods (bisection, Newton-Raphson, trapezoidal and Simpson's rules, least squares, interpolation).
Special: Fourier series, complex numbers, analytic functions and Cauchy-Riemann equations, and basic probability and statistics.
Section 2: Flight Mechanics & Space Dynamics
Core: standard atmosphere; aircraft classification and parts; pressure altitude and equivalent, calibrated and indicated airspeeds; primary flight instruments; aerodynamic forces and moments, angle of attack, sideslip; high-lift devices and controls; airplane performance (drag polar, take-off and landing, climb, ceilings, range and endurance, turning flight, V-n diagram, winds); static stability and control derivatives, stick-fixed and stick-free stability, tail sizing, dihedral and sweep, hinge moments; rigid-body momentum balance; central force motion, Kepler's laws and escape velocity.

Special: turbine blade cooling and compressor-turbine matching.
Inside the GATE AE question paper
Sixty-five questions, 100 marks, three hours. Each question is worth 1 or 2 marks.
General Aptitude supplies 10 questions and 15 marks. The remaining 85 marks belong to the subject, and 13 of them are Engineering Mathematics written for AE, so expect a PDE or a vector field framed around flow. GATE publishes no fixed split among the four aerospace sections. Within each section, though, the 90% Core rule holds.
MCQs carry one right option. MSQs may carry several, and only the exact correct set scores, with no partial credit. NATs want a number typed in. Only MCQs are penalised: 1/3 mark for a wrong 1-mark MCQ, 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark one.
In recent GATE exams, candidates got an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and could not bring a physical one. The GATE 2027 information brochure will confirm the rules. Train on a virtual calculator regardless; fumbling with an unfamiliar keypad mid-shock-problem costs minutes.
A typical AE NAT wants the Mach number behind a normal shock, a propeller aircraft's endurance, or the shear flow in one wall of a box section.
What to study first for GATE AE
Follow the dependencies. In AE they are unusually clear.
Mathematics and basic fluid mechanics go together at the start; conservation laws underpin both Aerodynamics and Propulsion.
Within Aerodynamics, do incompressible flow before compressible. Potential flow and thin airfoil theory come first. Shocks come next, and you will reuse them in intakes and nozzles.
Flight Mechanics should wait until you have finite wings. Lift curve slope, the drag polar and induced drag are the raw inputs to every performance and stability calculation.
Revise thermodynamics before Propulsion.
For Structures, make strength of materials solid before thin-walled sections. Shear flow in a closed cell only makes sense after Mohr's circle, bending and torsion feel easy.
Leave Special Topics until a section's Core is secure.
Start General Aptitude in week one: half an hour, most days.
A 14-week GATE AE timetable
Built for 4 to 5 focused hours a day and some college exposure to the subjects. With fewer hours, stretch each block and keep the sequence.
| Weeks | Focus | Finish the block with |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Linear algebra, calculus and vector calculus; fluid kinematics | Mixed mathematics questions from past AE papers |
| 2 | Conservation laws, dimensional analysis, viscous flows and boundary layers; ODEs and PDEs | Couette and Poiseuille flow problems |
| 3 | Potential flow, airfoil nomenclature, Kutta-Joukowski, thin airfoil theory | Lift and moment coefficient questions |
| 4 | Finite wings, lifting line, induced drag; numerical methods | Induced drag and lift slope numericals |
| 5 | Compressible flow: isentropic flow, normal and oblique shocks, Prandtl-Meyer, nozzles | Shock and nozzle questions until error-free |
| 6 | Atmosphere, airspeeds, instruments; airplane performance | Range, endurance, climb and turn questions |
| 7 | Static stability and control; space dynamics | Neutral point, tail sizing and orbit questions |
| 8 | Strength of materials: stress, strain, Mohr's circle, beams, shafts, buckling | Combined loading questions |
| 9 | Energy methods, Castigliano; thin-walled sections and shear flow | Shear centre and closed-section torsion questions |
| 10 | Structural dynamics; thermodynamics revision | SDOF and 2-DOF vibration questions |
| 11 | Engine cycles and performance, intakes, nozzles, combustors | Turbojet and turbofan numericals |
| 12 | Turbomachinery and rockets; all Special Topics | Velocity triangle and specific impulse questions |
| 13 | Full-length mocks (3) and weak-topic repair | Your error log, sorted by section |
| 14 | Mocks (3), formula sheets, light revision | A calm last week |
From week 3, keep one weekly session to revisit old material. Compressible flow relations are the first thing to fade, so revisit them most.
GATE AE alongside a semester or a job
Final-year students juggle projects and placements; engineers in design, MRO or testing have shifts. Either way, plan on 2 to 3 hours on weekdays plus longer weekends, and stretch the timetable to 24 to 28 weeks.
Weekdays suit one subject; weekends, mixed past-paper questions. Line GATE up with your courses: if this semester has Aircraft Stability or Gas Dynamics, do those GATE blocks now while lectures reinforce them. Working on airframes or engines makes control surfaces and compressor stages easier to remember.
Short daily sessions beat a weekend marathon.
How to prepare each GATE AE section
Engineering Mathematics
Core means vector calculus, eigenvalues, ODEs and the wave, heat and Laplace equations by separation of variables. Drill each until it takes two or three minutes. Fourier series, complex variables and probability are only Special Topics in AE, so they get less time than they would in, say, a mechanical paper.
Aerodynamics
This section ties the paper together. Superpose a uniform stream, a doublet and a vortex until the Kutta-Joukowski result feels obvious. Know what thin airfoil theory says about lift slope and the quarter-chord moment, and what lifting line theory says about induced drag and elliptic loading. Then compressible flow: isentropic tables, normal and oblique shocks, Prandtl-Meyer expansion, and when a convergent-divergent nozzle chokes. Students often mix up which side of a shock a ratio refers to. Label every station.
Flight Mechanics & Space Dynamics
Get the atmosphere and the airspeeds exactly right first. Performance revolves around the drag polar: conditions for minimum drag and minimum power, range and endurance for jet and propeller aircraft, rate of climb, ceilings, turns and the V-n diagram. Stability asks about the neutral point, static margin, stick-fixed versus stick-free behaviour, and what dihedral and sweep do. Space dynamics in the Core means central force motion, Kepler's laws, orbital energy and escape velocity.
Structures
Clean free-body diagrams and one consistent sign convention win most strength of materials questions. The aerospace-specific weight falls on thin-walled sections: shear flow, the shear centre, and torsion of open versus closed sections, unsymmetric ones included. In structural dynamics, know natural frequency, damping ratio and SDOF response, and the mode shapes of an undamped 2-DOF system.
Propulsion
Start from the Brayton cycle and the three efficiencies: thermal, propulsive and overall. Compare ramjet, turbojet, turbofan, turboprop and turboshaft, with and without afterburning. Velocity triangles, stage work and degree of reaction cover axial compressors and turbines; add the centrifugal stage. Rockets are dependable numerical material: the thrust equation, specific impulse and staging.
General Aptitude
Fifteen marks in about twenty minutes. Timed sets suffice.
If you add a second paper
AE can be paired with CE, ME or XE. ME is the natural partner for many: its fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, strength of materials and vibrations overlap with AE's base, as how to prepare for GATE ME shows. XE lets you pick two optional sections after its common mathematics section, and its fluid mechanics option sits close to AE aerodynamics; see the GATE XE preparation guide. CE is a bigger stretch, though structural analysis carries over; the GATE CE study plan sets out what else it demands. Commit to a second paper only after AE is on track.
GATE AE past papers
IIT Guwahati's official GATE 2026 download page holds recent AE question papers with answer keys.
Work them by subject while the plan is running. When you finish the compressible flow block, pull every shock and nozzle question from several years and solve them in one sitting. In the last month, switch to complete papers in a three-hour slot and mark them against the official key.
Keep an error log and name each cause: concept gap, wrong formula, a knots-to-m/s slip, or misreading. Each needs a different fix.
Some 2027 Core Topics may barely show up in past papers. Prepare them from the textbook all the same.
Mocks and exam-day order for GATE AE
Sit at least 6 to 8 full mocks in the last five weeks, timed to match your session.
Decide your order in advance. A sensible one: General Aptitude first, for about 20 minutes. Next, a quick sweep of conceptual questions on aircraft parts, instruments, controls, engine types and stability definitions. Then the numericals you are confident about, such as shocks, nozzles, performance, beams and cycles. Long multi-step problems like closed-section shear flow go to the end.
Guess an MCQ only after ruling out two options. Always submit a worked NAT or MSQ, since neither is penalised. In flight questions, convert knots and feet to SI before you start.
Textbooks and NPTEL for GATE AE
Standard textbooks cover everything. One per subject is plenty.
| Subject | Widely used texts |
|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics | Erwin Kreyszig, Advanced Engineering Mathematics |
| Aerodynamics | John D. Anderson, Fundamentals of Aerodynamics; Houghton and Carpenter, Aerodynamics for Engineering Students |
| Compressible flow | John D. Anderson, Modern Compressible Flow |
| Fluid mechanics basics | Fox and McDonald, Introduction to Fluid Mechanics |
| Flight mechanics | John D. Anderson, Introduction to Flight; Robert C. Nelson, Flight Stability and Automatic Control |
| Space dynamics | Howard D. Curtis, Orbital Mechanics for Engineering Students |
| Structures | T. H. G. Megson, Aircraft Structures for Engineering Students; Gere and Timoshenko, Mechanics of Materials |
| Structural dynamics | W. T. Thomson, Theory of Vibration with Applications |
| Propulsion | Hill and Peterson, Mechanics and Thermodynamics of Propulsion; Saravanamuttoo, Rogers and Cohen, Gas Turbine Theory |
| Rockets | Sutton and Biblarz, Rocket Propulsion Elements |
NPTEL offers free IIT and IISc lectures on aerodynamics, flight mechanics, aircraft structures and propulsion, and pair well with the books. Read Megson on closed sections slowly, pencil in hand.
Common GATE AE mistakes
Over-studying Special Topics is the classic one: a week on Rayleigh flow while closed-section torsion is shaky.
Airspeeds catch people out; indicated, calibrated, equivalent and true each differ.
In shock and nozzle work, the usual slips are using upstream values where downstream ones are needed and forgetting to check whether the nozzle has choked.
Plenty of students handle beam bending well yet freeze on shear flow in a closed cell. Practise it until it bores you.
Guessing MSQs and collecting too many books round out the list.
The last month before GATE AE
Four weeks before your paper, close the syllabus. New topics now cost more than they return.
Spend the month on two or three full mocks a week with equal time spent analysing them, and on re-solving your error log. Build one-page sheets for compressible flow, aircraft performance, stability, thin-walled sections, engine cycles and rockets. Keep timed General Aptitude daily.
In the final week, sleep on a fixed schedule and revise at the hour your session will run.
After GATE AE: admissions and jobs
A valid AE score opens M.Tech, MS (by research) and PhD applications in aerospace and allied fields. IITs make M.Tech offers through COAP. CCMT handles NIT, IIIT and many other admissions, while IISc and several IITs select MS and PhD students themselves.
Some public sector organisations use GATE scores when recruiting, each with its own notification naming eligible papers and the process. Read those notices yourself. A GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced, so a score this February still counts if you apply a year or two later.
To see how AE sits beside the other codes, look through all 30 GATE papers, and the full set of GATE preparation guides covers every one of them.
