What GATE CH tests

CH is the Chemical Engineering paper of GATE. Its score opens M.Tech, MS and PhD admissions in chemical engineering and allied fields, and some public sector organisations use GATE scores when they recruit.

The paper behaves like one long flow sheet. A reactor question often needs a material balance first and an equilibrium constant second. An economics question may ask you to size an exchanger before you can cost it.

Most of the 72 subject marks come from computing something: a conversion, a heat duty, a number of stages, a payback period. Memory helps only in Chemical Technology.

How the GATE CH paper is put together

Ten of the 65 questions are General Aptitude and 55 come from the CH syllabus, each worth 1 or 2 marks. By weight, that is 15 marks of aptitude, 13 of Engineering Mathematics and 72 of core chemical engineering. The maths questions are written for the CH paper, so expect them to sound like chemical engineering: a Laplace transform that is really a tank response, or a regression on rate data.

Three formats appear. An MCQ has one right option. An MSQ may have several, and you score only if your selection matches the key exactly, with no partial credit. A NAT asks you to type a value, and it carries no penalty. Only MCQs are negatively marked, at 1/3 of a mark for a wrong 1-mark question and 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark one.

On calculators, recent GATE exams have given candidates an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and have not let them bring their own. The GATE 2027 information brochure will settle the rule for this cycle. Practise on a virtual calculator anyway. Evaluating an Antoine equation with a mouse is slower than you expect.

Where to start with GATE CH

Start with Process Calculations. It is small, but choosing a basis and counting degrees of freedom carry into reactors, separations and costing.

Thermodynamics comes next, because fugacity, activity coefficients and VLE are the input to distillation and absorption, while reaction equilibrium feeds the reactor chapters.

For transport, go momentum, heat, mass. Fluid Mechanics and Mechanical Operations is the broadest section by syllabus length. Do its flow half first, since boundary layers reappear in Heat Transfer. Take Heat and Mass Transfer back to back so the Chilton–Colburn analogy clicks. Budget extra days for the separation operations.

CRE is then quick work. Revise Laplace transforms before Process Control. Leave Plant Design and Economics and Chemical Technology for the closing weeks; one is formula practice, the other daily reading.

Pair each maths topic with the subject that needs it: ODEs with CRE, Laplace with control, eigenvalues with state-space models. Give General Aptitude about half an hour, three or four days a week, from week one.

A 14-week GATE CH timetable

Built for four to five focused hours a day.

Weeks Subjects You are ready to move on when you can
1 Process Calculations; linear algebra Set up a recycle-with-purge problem and solve it without looking at notes
2–3 Thermodynamics; calculus Find a bubble point from Antoine constants and an equilibrium conversion from ΔG°
4–5 Fluid Mechanics, then Mechanical Operations; ODEs Size a pump and get a filtration time from constant-pressure data
6 Heat Transfer Rate an exchanger by both LMTD and ε–NTU and balance a double-effect evaporator
7–8 Mass Transfer: diffusion and coefficients, then the operations Step off McCabe–Thiele stages, find minimum reflux, compute NTU for an absorber
9 CRE: kinetics, ideal reactors, multiple reactions Compare CSTR and PFR volumes for the same conversion and judge selectivity
10 CRE: RTD, non-isothermal reactors, catalysis; Laplace transforms Read an E-curve and calculate an effectiveness factor from a Thiele modulus
11 Instrumentation and Process Control Get a closed-loop response, apply Routh, read a gain margin off a Bode plot
12 Plant Design and Economics; Chemical Technology; probability, AI/ML, numerical methods Work out a discounted payback and sketch the ammonia–urea flow from memory
13 Three full mocks; repair weak topics Sort your error log by subject
14 Two or three mocks, formula sheets, light revision Sit three hours without fading

From week 3 on, keep one evening a week for old subjects. Balances and thermodynamics fade quietly if you leave them.

Fitting GATE CH around college or plant work

On two or three hours a weekday, stretch the plan to roughly 24–28 weeks.

Work one subject at a time during the week and keep weekends for mixed numericals. A fixed 90-minute daily slot does more than one long Sunday.

Use what is fresh. Just sat a semester exam in mass transfer? Do that GATE topic now. If you work in a plant, start with control loops, pumps and exchangers, which you see every day.

GATE CH subject-wise strategy

Engineering Mathematics

Thirteen marks, written for chemical engineers. Practise eigenvalues, ODEs solved by Laplace transforms, the standard distributions, and numerical methods such as Newton–Raphson, the trapezoidal and Simpson's rules and Euler's method. The 2027 syllabus adds fundamentals of AI/ML: linear regression and principal component analysis. Learn least squares and PCA as an eigenvalue problem.

Process Calculations

Draw the block diagram first. Pick a basis, count unknowns against independent equations, then choose the tie component. Repeat recycle, bypass and purge problems until the setup is automatic.

Thermodynamics

The pure-component side is property relations, cubic equations of state, residual properties and fugacity. For mixtures you need partial molar properties, Gibbs–Duhem, activity coefficient models and bubble and dew point calculations. Don't stop before reaction equilibrium; van 't Hoff and equilibrium conversion are short chapters.

Fluid Mechanics and Mechanical Operations

For flow: Bernoulli with losses, friction factors, pipes in series and parallel, pump power, orifice and venturi meters, Ergun and minimum fluidisation velocity. For particles, practise terminal settling velocity in the Stokes regime, the constant-pressure filtration equation, Rittinger's, Kick's and Bond's laws, and cyclone separation.

Heat Transfer

Composite walls and cylinders, critical insulation radius, convection correlations, view factors and grey-body radiation, LMTD with correction factors, ε–NTU, and multiple-effect evaporators. Write the energy balance before choosing a correlation.

Mass Transfer

Begin by separating diffusion through a stagnant film from equimolar counter-diffusion, a pair students confuse. Then coefficients and analogies, then the operations on paper: McCabe–Thiele stages, minimum reflux and the q-line, absorber NTU, extraction on triangular diagrams, drying rate curves, psychrometric problems.

Chemical Reaction Engineering

Rate laws and the integral and differential methods come first. Then batch, CSTR and PFR design equations, reactors in series, Levenspiel plots, selectivity in parallel and series reactions, RTD with tanks-in-series and dispersion models, adiabatic operation, and the Thiele modulus with effectiveness factor. A typical NAT asks for a reactor volume or exit conversion.

Instrumentation and Process Control

First- and second-order responses, dead time and Padé approximation, inverse response, block diagram reduction, Routh–Hurwitz, Bode plots with gain and phase margins, and Ziegler–Nichols and Cohen–Coon tuning. Know what integral action removes and what derivative action adds.

Plant Design and Economics

Straight-line and declining-balance depreciation, present worth, discounted cash flow, rate of return, payback, cost indices and the six-tenths rule, plus optimum pipe diameter and optimum insulation thickness. One A4 sheet holds all of it.

Chemical Technology

For every industry in the syllabus, put feedstock, main reaction, catalyst, conditions and products on a card. Read ten minutes of cards a day.

General Aptitude

Fifteen marks of verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial reasoning. Always practise it timed.

GATE CH past papers: how to use them

Nothing shows the style and depth of CH questions better than the official papers. Past question papers and answer keys are published by the organising institutes, and the GATE 2026 set is in the official GATE 2026 archive.

Use them in two rounds. Solve a subject's questions from several years as soon as you finish it, to see how a distillation or control question is framed. In the final month, sit complete papers in one three-hour block on a virtual calculator.

Mark every answer against the official key. Log each miss with its reason (setup, units, arithmetic, misread) and re-solve it a week later. Check older questions against the 2027 syllabus before you spend time on them.

Mocks and exam-hall technique for GATE CH

Start mocks about five weeks out, in the same three-hour window as your session.

A sequence that works well in CH: clear General Aptitude in roughly 20 minutes. Then sweep the paper for anything under two minutes, such as conceptual MCQs on control modes, Chemical Technology recall or a one-line Bernoulli. Return for 2-mark numericals whose setup you can see at once. Leave the long ones (multi-effect evaporators, stage-by-stage separations, coupled reactor and energy balances) for the end.

With negative marking on MCQs, guess only after you have struck out two options. NATs cost nothing if wrong, so enter every value you have worked out. Before you submit one, check the unit asked for (kW or W, kmol or mol) and the decimal places.

Choosing a second paper with GATE CH

The official two-paper list lets a CH candidate add ES, PE or XE. Take one only if it costs little extra study.

XE fits most naturally. Its Engineering Mathematics section XE0 is compulsory, and you pick two optional sections, where Fluid Mechanics (XE1) and Thermodynamics (XE4) sit close to your CH preparation, while Polymer Science and Engineering (XE5) links to the polymers in Chemical Technology. The GATE XE preparation guide explains how its sections are chosen.

Environmental Science and Engineering suits students drawn to water and wastewater treatment or air pollution control, where your reactor and mass transfer thinking applies, though its environmental chemistry and microbiology are new ground. Read how to prepare for GATE ES before deciding.

Petroleum Engineering shares the fluid flow and thermodynamics base, then moves into reservoir engineering, drilling, well testing and enhanced oil recovery. The GATE PE 2027 strategy guide covers that syllabus.

Where GATE CH aspirants lose marks

Re-reading chapters instead of solving problems is the biggest leak.

A shaky Process Calculations base later shows up as wrong reactor and separation answers. Unit and basis slips come next: mass versus mole basis, gauge versus absolute pressure, °C versus K in an Arrhenius term. Each of those turns a correct method into a wrong NAT.

Some people drop Plant Design and Economics or Chemical Technology because they are small, which is exactly why they are cheap marks. Linear regression and PCA need only a few hours too.

On MSQs, one doubtful tick throws away the whole question. And plans without a weekly revision slot lose October's subjects by February.

Your final month before GATE CH

Close the syllabus about four weeks before your exam.

Sit two or three full mocks a week and review each for as long as it took. Re-solve every entry in your error log. Build short formula sheets for transport, CRE, control and economics, and read the Chemical Technology cards daily.

Keep timed General Aptitude daily. In the last week, fix your sleep and shift study to your exam session's hours.

After GATE CH: admissions and jobs

A GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced, so one good CH score can serve more than one admission cycle.

IITs make M.Tech offers through COAP. NITs, IIITs and many other institutes admit through CCMT. IISc and several IITs run their own MS and PhD admissions. Some public sector organisations use GATE scores in recruitment, and each one publishes its own notification naming the papers it accepts, its eligibility and its process.
