What GATE PE covers

GATE PE is the Petroleum Engineering paper, and its syllabus reads like the life of an upstream field. Rocks and traps first. Then drilling the well, logging it, testing it, completing it and producing from it, onshore and offshore, followed by safety, enhanced recovery and unconventional resources.

Graduates of petroleum, petrochemical and chemical engineering are the usual candidates, along with applied geology and geophysics students who like reservoir work. A lot of the syllabus is descriptive: tool names, rig systems, offshore structures, safety systems. The rest is numerical and fairly formula-driven. Both halves need attention; a plan built only around numericals leaves the descriptive marks on the table.

The official GA syllabus covers verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial aptitude.

Inside the PE question paper

General Aptitude contributes ten questions and 15 marks. The petroleum part contributes fifty-five questions and 85 marks, of which PE-specific Engineering Mathematics makes up 13. That leaves 72 marks for Sections 2 to 11, with no official split among them. All 65 questions are worth 1 or 2 marks each, and you have 3 hours.

MCQs have one correct option and lose 1/3 or 2/3 of a mark when wrong, depending on whether they carry 1 or 2 marks. MSQs may have several correct options, carry no penalty, and give nothing unless your selection is exactly right. NATs need a typed number and carry no penalty either.

About calculators: recent GATE exams have offered an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and have not allowed physical ones. The GATE 2027 information brochure will settle the rules for this year. Train on a virtual calculator regardless, especially for log-heavy well test numericals.

Numerical questions in PE tend to be compact. Find the permeability from a semi-log drawdown slope. Find water saturation from Archie's equation given porosity and resistivities. Find the mud weight needed to balance a given formation pressure at depth. Alongside these sit factual questions on logging tools, rig systems, offshore units and safety systems.

Order of study for GATE PE

Engineering Mathematics comes first, studied with one eye on the diffusivity equation. The PE syllabus names the one-dimensional diffusivity and Laplace equations outright, and regression and numerical integration show up again in well test and reservoir work.

Reservoir Engineering follows. It is the broadest numerical section, and its vocabulary (porosity, saturation, formation volume factor, Darcy flow, material balance) is used everywhere else.

Do Well Testing immediately after, while radial flow is fresh. Formation Evaluation fits next, because log interpretation is mostly about porosity and saturation.

Drilling and Production Operations are long and mix equipment with calculation. Hydrostatics and casing loads anchor drilling; IPR and nodal analysis anchor production.

Exploration, Offshore, HSE, EOR and Latest Trends are shorter and more descriptive. Place EOR after Reservoir Engineering, since mobility ratio and displacement efficiency build on it. Give General Aptitude 20 minutes on alternate days throughout.

A 14-week GATE PE study plan

The table assumes you put in four to five hours daily and met most sections at college. Less time means longer blocks, not fewer sections.

Weeks Focus Finish the block with
1 Linear algebra, calculus, differential equations; Petroleum Exploration Past-paper questions on maths and reservoir rocks
2 Reservoir rock and fluid properties, core analysis, phase behaviour PVT and porosity-permeability numericals
3 Flow through porous media, coning, drives, material balance, reserves Material balance and recovery questions
4 Geomechanics, simulation basics; probability, statistics and numerical methods A timed mixed test
5 Oil and Gas Well Testing Drawdown, build-up and Horner plot questions
6 Petroleum Formation Evaluation Archie and log-reading questions until error-free
7 Drilling: rigs, systems, fluids, hydraulics, bits, cementing Mud weight and hydraulics numericals
8 Drilling: casing and drill string design, problems, directional and special drilling Well control and directional survey questions
9 Production: completion, workover, formation damage, stimulation, artificial lift Questions on lift selection and stimulation
10 Production: IPR, nodal analysis, multiphase flow, flow assurance, processing and equipment Nodal analysis and separator questions
11 Enhanced Oil Recovery; Latest Trends Displacement efficiency questions
12 Offshore Drilling and Production; HSE Short notes for both, then past-paper questions
13 Full-length mocks (3) and weak-topic repair Your error log, sorted by section
14 Mocks (3), formula sheets, light revision A calm last week

Eleven sections will not stay in your head unaided. Every Saturday from week 3, reopen something you finished earlier.

Studying while on rotation or in final year

Plenty of PE candidates are in final year with a project due, or working field rotations. Stretch the plan to 24 to 28 weeks if you have two or three hours on weekdays plus longer weekends.

Weekdays: one section at a time. Weekends: mixed past-paper questions.

Field time can help. If you have watched a cementing job, a wireline run or a workover, link the syllabus line to it. On rotation, when solving problems is impractical, carry short notes for HSE, offshore practice and logging tools and read them in the gaps.

How to prepare each GATE PE section

Engineering Mathematics

Thirteen predictable marks. Spend extra time on differential equations, since the diffusivity and Laplace equations are named, and on numerical integration and linear regression.

Petroleum Exploration

Sandstone and carbonate reservoirs, source rock, migration, traps and seals, exploration methods, and resource classification terms. One page of notes covers it.

Oil and Gas Well Drilling Technology

Know the five rig systems (hoisting, rotating, circulating, power, well control), mud properties and hydrostatic pressure, bit types, cementing, casing design loads, and drilling problems such as stuck pipe, lost circulation and kicks. Kill mud weight and equivalent circulating density are favourite numericals. Practise one directional survey calculation and know what managed pressure and underbalanced drilling are meant to achieve.

Reservoir Engineering

The centre of the paper. Be quick with porosity, saturation, relative permeability, capillary pressure, oil and gas formation volume factors, and gas compressibility. Practise linear and radial Darcy flow, the general material balance equation with drive indices, and volumetric reserves. Students often mix up reservoir barrels and stock tank barrels; write the units on every line. Simulation basics (finite differences, grids, black oil models, history matching) need concept-level reading only.

Petroleum Production Operations

Long and practical. Focus on IPR curves and productivity index, tubing performance and nodal analysis, choosing an artificial lift method, acidising and fracturing, skin and formation damage, and flow assurance problems: wax, hydrates, asphaltenes and scale. Know what each surface item does, from separators to heat exchangers.

Offshore Drilling and Production Practices

Mostly descriptive. Platform and mobile unit types, buoyancy and stability, mooring and dynamic positioning, risers, subsea systems, SPM and SBM.

Petroleum Formation Evaluation

For every log, learn what it measures, where it works and where it fails. Archie's equation, shale volume from gamma ray, porosity from density, neutron and sonic logs, and cross-plots are the calculation core. The density-neutron gas effect is a classic conceptual question. Cement bond, casing inspection and production logs are also listed.

Oil and Gas Well Testing

The most numerical section after reservoir engineering. Derive the line-source solution once, then practise semi-log analysis, Horner plots, skin, wellbore storage, radius of investigation, superposition and derivative-plot shapes. Drawdown and build-up use different time functions, and confusing them is an easy slip. Gas well testing and interference tests round it off.

Health Safety and Environment

Treat the syllabus list as your checklist: hazards and sour gas, shutdown and blowdown, gas and fire detection, protective equipment, policy, disaster management, environmental impact and oil-spill control.

Enhanced Oil Recovery Techniques

Mobility ratio, microscopic and macroscopic displacement efficiency, sweep efficiency and screening criteria first. Then how each chemical, miscible, thermal, microbial and low salinity method raises recovery.

Latest Trends in Petroleum Engineering

For coal bed methane, shale gas, oil shale, gas hydrates, heavy oil and CO2 trapping, know what the resource is and the main idea behind producing or storing it.

General Aptitude

Fifteen marks in roughly twenty minutes, earned by timed practice.

Working through past GATE PE papers

The GATE 2026 archive at IIT Guwahati has recent PE question papers with official answer keys. Earlier years are on their own official sites.

Use them by section first. Finish well testing, say, then pull every well testing question from the last several PE papers. In the last month, switch to full papers in a three-hour sitting and check against the official key.

For each mistake, note the concept and why it happened: a concept gap, a formula slip, a unit error or a misread. Re-solve it a week later.

Field units versus SI units are an easy place to lose marks. Note the unit system of every question as you check your answer. When a 2027 syllabus line hardly appears in past papers, prepare it from the textbook anyway.

Mock tests and timing in GATE PE

Six to eight full-length mocks is a reasonable target for the closing weeks, each started at the hour your real session begins.

A running order that suits PE's mix:

  1. General Aptitude, about 20 minutes.
  2. A fast pass through factual questions on HSE, offshore, logging tools and latest trends.
  3. Numericals you recognise: material balance, well testing, Archie, hydrostatics, nodal analysis.
  4. Long calculations last.

Because MCQs carry a penalty, guess only when two options are clearly wrong. NATs and MSQs carry none, so enter every answer you have worked out. Before submitting a NAT, check whether it asks for psi or kPa, md or m², and how many decimals.

Offshore, HSE and Latest Trends are better served by college notes and lectures than by a single book. NPTEL has free courses from IIT faculty on many petroleum, chemical and mathematics topics.

Where GATE PE candidates slip

Reading HSE, Offshore and Latest Trends once and calling them done. Descriptive sections need several passes.

Mixing field and SI units in reservoir, drilling and well test work.

Learning well testing as a list of formulas. You should be able to look at a derivative plot and say which part is wellbore storage, which is radial flow and which is a boundary.

Leaving Engineering Mathematics until the end, when it is 13 fixed marks.

Ticking extra MSQ options on a hunch.

Working from an old syllabus. The 2027 PDF names reservoir simulation, geomechanics, low salinity flooding and CO2 trapping, so check each line.

Adding CH as a second paper

PE has a single permitted partner in the official 2027 two-paper list: CH, Chemical Engineering. The overlap is real. Fluid flow, heat exchangers, pumps and compressors, phase behaviour and field processing all have counterparts in CH, and chemical engineers often already know them.

CH is still a complete paper with its own mass transfer, reaction engineering and process control. Read how to prepare for GATE CH and judge whether you can cover it without weakening PE.

Last month before GATE PE

About four weeks out, close the syllabus.

Two or three mocks a week is enough if each is followed by a proper post-mortem. Clear your error log twice before the exam.

Make one-page formula sheets for Reservoir Engineering, Well Testing, Formation Evaluation and Drilling, and read the descriptive sections (Exploration, Offshore, HSE, EOR methods, Latest Trends) every few days. A ten-minute General Aptitude set each morning keeps that section sharp. During the final week, go to bed and wake up as you will on exam day.

What GATE PE leads to

A GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced. A PE score from March 2027 can therefore back applications in more than one admission year.

For postgraduate study, IIT M.Tech offers are made on COAP, and NITs, IIITs and many others fill seats through CCMT. Several IITs admit MS by research and PhD students through their own process. Public sector recruiters that use GATE each publish a notification; only that document tells you whether PE qualifies.
