Who GATE ES is for
ES stands for Environmental Science and Engineering. Few GATE papers mix disciplines this freely. One section asks about buffer solutions and redox, the next about the TCA cycle, the next about hydraulic jumps, and later ones about Gaussian plumes, landfills and the National Green Tribunal Act.
So nobody walks in strong everywhere. Civil and chemical engineers usually know hydraulics and treatment units already. Graduates in biotechnology, microbiology or chemistry tend to be stronger in the science sections and weaker at fluid mechanics. Before planning, mark which of the nine sections are new to you. That map decides your timetable.

Nine sections in the GATE ES 2027 syllabus
ES has nine sections for 2027, and General Aptitude sits on top as in every paper. Keep the official ES syllabus PDF open while planning; it is the checklist that counts.
- Mathematics Foundation: linear algebra (matrices, linear systems, eigenvalues), calculus up to first order ODEs, numerical methods (roots, interpolation and least squares, trapezoidal and Simpson's rules, numerical ODEs), and probability and statistics including risk and reliability, regression and t, F and chi-square tests.
- Environmental Chemistry: bonding, equilibria, thermodynamics and kinetics; water chemistry (quality parameters, acid-base and carbonate equilibria, buffers, gas solubility, complexation, precipitation, redox, contaminants); soil chemistry (NPK, cation exchange capacity, base saturation, sodium absorption ratio); atmospheric chemistry and ozone formation.
- Environmental Microbiology: groups and classification of microorganisms and their role in treatment and bioremediation; cell chemistry and structure, antimicrobial resistance, quorum sensing; metabolism (glycolysis, TCA cycle, electron transport, fermentation, enzyme kinetics); growth and Monod's model, batch and continuous culture; pathogens, indicator organisms, MPN and membrane filtration.
- Water Resources and Environmental Hydraulics: global water resources and conservation; hydrological cycle, hydrographs, unit hydrographs, reservoir capacity, rainwater harvesting; aquifers, Darcy's law and steady well hydraulics; fluid properties, hydrostatics, pipe flow and networks, flow measurement, continuity, momentum and energy equations, and open channel flow including hydraulic jump and lined channel design.
- Water & Wastewater Treatment and Management: quality parameters, eutrophication, oxygen sag curve; water treatment from screening to disinfection, distribution and storage; population forecasting, sewer design, primary to tertiary treatment, sludge and sewage farming; industrial effluents, CETPs, recycling and zero liquid discharge; mass balance and batch, CMFR and plug flow reactors.
- Air and Noise Pollution: atmospheric processes, indoor air, criteria pollutants, standards and air quality indices; particulate control (settling chambers, cyclones, wet scrubbers, baghouses, ESPs); gaseous control, Fick's law and vehicular emission control; meteorology, stability, mixing height, wind roses and Gaussian plume modelling; noise levels (Leq, Ldn), standards and control.
- Solid and Hazardous Waste Management: integrated solid waste management, waste hierarchy and Indian rules; municipal solid waste from generation to landfill, waste-to-energy, circular economy and urban metabolism; hazardous waste and soil and groundwater contamination; biomedical, plastic, energy-sector, C&D and e-waste.
- Global and Regional Environmental Issues: greenhouse gases, radiative forcing, GWP, climate change, urban heat islands, acid rain, the ozone hole; ecology, ecosystems, biodiversity and drivers of environmental degradation.
- Environmental Management and Sustainable Development: EMS and ISO 14000, auditing, EIA, life cycle assessment, health risk assessment and occupational hygiene; environmental law (Water and Air Acts, EPA 1986, NGT Act 2010, National Environment Policy, international law and treaties); energy and environment; sustainable development, SDGs, carbon pricing, emission trading and ESG.
Read the PDF line by line once; quorum sensing, urban metabolism and ESG frameworks are easy to overlook.
Marks, question types and penalties
Sixty-five questions in three hours. Ten General Aptitude questions give 15 marks; the 55 subject questions give 85. Every question is worth either 1 or 2 marks.
Inside those 85 marks, 13 come from engineering mathematics written specifically for ES, which in this syllabus is Section 1, Mathematics Foundation. The other 72 marks are spread over Sections 2 to 9. GATE publishes no fixed split between them.
You will see MCQs (one correct option), MSQs (one or more correct options, no partial credit) and NATs (type the number). Only MCQs are penalised: 1/3 mark for a wrong 1-mark answer, 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark answer.
Recent GATE exams have provided an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and have not allowed physical ones. The 2027 information brochure will confirm the rules; practise on a virtual calculator either way.
Expect calculation and recall side by side. One question wants the BOD exerted in five days at a given rate constant or the overflow rate of a settling tank; the next asks which Act set up the NGT.
Choosing a starting point for ES
Start with chemistry and mathematics together. Alkalinity, hardness, carbonate equilibrium and redox underlie coagulation, softening and disinfection later. First order ODEs in the maths section reappear as BOD decay and reactor kinetics.
Hydraulics comes before distribution systems and sewers, which are pipe networks and open channels in disguise.
Microbiology goes before secondary treatment. Activated sludge and anaerobic digestion are applied Monod kinetics, and they make far more sense once you have seen specific growth rate and substrate utilisation in their pure form.
Air and noise, then solid and hazardous waste, are largely self-contained. Either order works.
Global issues, management and law come last but should never get one long push. They fade fast.
Fourteen weeks to GATE ES
Built for four to five focused hours a day with some earlier exposure to most sections. Science graduates should add a week to hydraulics. Civil graduates should add one to microbiology.
| Weeks | Focus | Finish the block with |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Linear algebra and calculus; chemistry fundamentals | Past-paper mathematics questions |
| 2 | Water chemistry: equilibria, carbonate system, buffers, redox; soil chemistry | Alkalinity and pH numericals |
| 3 | Fluid properties, hydrostatics, pipe flow and networks; probability and statistics | Pipe flow and head loss questions |
| 4 | Open channel flow; surface water hydrology; groundwater and well hydraulics | Unit hydrograph and Darcy's law questions |
| 5 | Microorganisms, cell biology and metabolism | A short concept test from your notes |
| 6 | Microbial growth, Monod's model, microbiology and health; reactor kinetics | Growth rate and reactor sizing numericals |
| 7 | Water quality, lakes and rivers, oxygen sag; water treatment and distribution | Settling, filtration and disinfection questions |
| 8 | Sewage, sewers, treatment, sludge; industrial effluents; numerical methods | Activated sludge and population forecast questions |
| 9 | Atmosphere and atmospheric chemistry; air quality standards; particulate control | Cyclone and ESP efficiency questions |
| 10 | Gaseous control, vehicular emissions; meteorology and dispersion; noise | Gaussian plume and decibel addition questions |
| 11 | Solid waste, hazardous waste and special waste streams | Waste generation and landfill questions |
| 12 | Global issues and ecology; EMS, EIA, LCA, law, energy and sustainability | One-page notes for each Act and concept |
| 13 | Full-length mocks (3) and weak-topic repair | Your error log, sorted by section |
| 14 | Mocks (3), formula and fact sheets, light revision | A calm last week |
From week 3, give one session a week to earlier sections, or October's chemistry will be hazy by January.
If you are studying part-time
Many ES candidates are final-year students with a dissertation, or graduates working in consultancies and treatment plants. With two or three hours on weekdays and longer weekends, stretch the plan above to 24 to 28 weeks.
Take one section at a time on weekdays and keep weekends for mixed past-paper questions. Ninety minutes every evening holds better than a single long Sunday.
Your work can carry part of the load. Someone sampling effluent already knows BOD and COD; an EIA consultant already reads the Acts.
How to approach each ES section
Mathematics Foundation
The ES list leans applied: numerical integration, least squares, regression, and t, F and chi-square tests. Aim for two to three minutes per question.
Environmental Chemistry
Water chemistry is the core. Be quick with pH and alkalinity from carbonate species, hardness expressed as mg/L of CaCO3, Henry's law for dissolved oxygen, and balancing redox reactions. Soil indices such as CEC, base saturation and SAR are definitions plus one-line calculations.
Environmental Microbiology
Partly memory, partly numbers. Learn the pathways, cell structures and why coliforms serve as indicators behind MPN testing. Then practise specific growth rate, doubling time and Monod's equation as numericals, because they return in activated sludge questions.
Water Resources and Environmental Hydraulics
The widest numerical section. Hydrostatic force on a plane, Bernoulli with losses, head loss in pipes, specific energy and the depth after a hydraulic jump, unit hydrograph ordinates, Darcy velocity, and steady flow to a well in confined and unconfined aquifers. Students mix up the confined and unconfined well equations, so derive both once side by side.
Water & Wastewater Treatment and Management
The applied heart of ES. For every unit, know the governing equation and the design parameter: settling velocity and overflow rate, filtration rate, chlorine contact, BOD exertion, the oxygen sag critical deficit, and F/M ratio, sludge age and sludge volume index for activated sludge. Learn arithmetic, geometric and incremental population forecasts by working one example each. Then compare a CMFR and a plug flow reactor for the same first-order removal; that comparison is a favourite kind of NAT.
Air and Noise Pollution
Keep ambient and emission standards apart, and primary and secondary pollutants apart. Practise collection efficiency for cyclones and ESPs, Gaussian plume concentration with stability classes and effective stack height, and decibel addition. Leq and Ldn are separate measures and easy to swap.
Solid and Hazardous Waste Management
Mostly descriptive, with numericals on generation rate, energy content and landfill volume. One table helps: waste stream, source, characteristics, management practice and the Indian rule that governs it.
Global and Regional Environmental Issues
Know radiative forcing and GWP precisely, and the chemistry of acid rain and ozone depletion.
Environmental Management and Sustainable Development
List each Act named in the syllabus with its year and purpose. Learn EIA and LCA as ordered steps. Polluter pays and the precautionary principle, the SDGs, carbon pricing, emission trading and ESG need crisp one-line definitions.
General Aptitude
Fifteen marks, about twenty minutes. Timed sets are the whole method.
Using official GATE ES question papers
Get past ES papers and answer keys from official sources such as the GATE 2026 archive at IIT Guwahati. They show which mix of calculation and recall the examiners actually set.
After each block of the plan, solve that section's questions from several recent papers before moving on. In the final month, switch to whole papers in a three-hour sitting.
Log each miss with its reason (concept, formula, units, misread, forgotten fact) and re-solve it a week later.
The 2027 syllabus has been revised, so past papers will not cover everything listed. If a 2027 topic barely appears in old papers, study it from the textbook anyway.
Some ES topics also appear in neighbouring papers. Treatment, hydrology and hydraulics questions in official CE papers are useful extra practice, and the GATE CE preparation guide explains how civil engineering students approach them.
Exam-day order and full-length mocks
Plan on six to eight full mocks across the last five weeks, sat at the same hour as your real session.
Rehearse one running order in every mock. This one suits ES's mix:
- General Aptitude first, about 20 minutes, to bank those marks while fresh.
- A fast sweep of factual questions on law, management, global issues, microbiology and waste that take under a minute each.
- The numericals you recognise: treatment units, reactors, hydraulics, dispersion, noise.
- Long multi-step calculations last, with whatever time remains.
Wrong MCQs cost marks, so guess only after eliminating two options. NATs and MSQs have no penalty; always enter an answer you have worked out. Most ES slips are unit slips: mg/L against kg/day, ppm against µg/m³, m³/s against MLD. Check the decimal places a NAT asks for.
Textbooks for environmental engineering and science
Standard texts cover everything. Choose one main book per area and finish it before adding a second.

A second paper alongside GATE ES
With ES as your primary paper, the official 2027 list allows BT, CE, CH or GE as the second paper.
CE suits civil graduates, since hydraulics, hydrology and environmental engineering overlap; see how to prepare for GATE CE. Chemical engineers share reactors and mass transfer with ES, and the GATE CH preparation guide covers that paper. Biotechnology graduates will find the microbiology and metabolism overlap in the GATE BT preparation guide. GE, the geomatics paper, suits those drawn to mapping and remote sensing work; read how to prepare for GATE GE before committing.
A second paper is a second full syllabus.
Traps in GATE ES preparation
Treating ES as a memory paper, or as a numbers paper. Hydraulics and reactors need weekly numericals; law and global issues need repeated revision.
Neglecting the discipline you never studied. Civil students skimp on chemistry and microbiology; science graduates skimp on hydraulics.
Converting units carelessly between mg/L and kg/day in treatment loads.
Pushing Mathematics Foundation to the end, when it is a fixed 13 marks.
Guessing on MSQs, where one wrong tick zeroes the question.
The four weeks before the exam
New topics stop about four weeks out. After that, the month is for consolidation.
Sit two or three full mocks a week and spend as long analysing each as you spent writing it. Re-solve every question in your error log.
Keep two kinds of sheet. Formula sheets for hydraulics, treatment, reactors, air pollution control and noise. Fact sheets for environmental law, management tools, global issues and waste rules, which you read every few days.
Do some General Aptitude daily, timed. Shift meals and sleep in the last week so your sharpest hours fall in your exam slot.
Admissions and jobs after GATE ES
Your GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced.
M.Tech, MS by research and PhD programmes in environmental engineering and related fields accept GATE scores. IITs make M.Tech offers through COAP. NITs, IIITs and many other institutes admit through CCMT, while IISc and several IITs run their own MS and PhD admissions. Each programme names the GATE papers it accepts, so read the admission notice.
Public sector recruitment through GATE is announced organisation by organisation, and each notification names the papers it will consider.
