Who GATE BT is for

BT is the Biotechnology paper, taken by students of biotechnology, biochemical engineering and the life sciences. A valid score is used for M.Tech, MS and PhD admissions at the IITs, IISc, NITs and other institutes.

The paper straddles two disciplines. Roughly half the syllabus reads like a biology degree: biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, genetics, cell and molecular biology. The rest is engineering: reactor design, sterilisation, chromatography, process control, cloning and sequence alignment. B.Sc. and M.Sc. students usually need extra hours on mathematics and bioreaction engineering, while B.Tech biotechnology students tend to be thinner on immunology, genetics and plant and animal biotechnology.

Life-science students weighing a second paper should read the GATE XL (life sciences) preparation guide, whose biochemistry and microbiology sections overlap with BT's General Biology. If evolution and population genetics are what you enjoy most, how to prepare for GATE EY covers the ecology and evolution paper.

Inside the GATE BT question paper

Part Questions Marks
General Aptitude 10 15
BT subject questions 55 85 (13 Engineering Mathematics, 72 biotechnology)
Total 65 100

You get three hours, and each question is worth 1 or 2 marks. MCQs have a single correct option. MSQs can have one or more, and nothing is awarded unless your selection matches the key exactly. NAT questions want a typed number, for instance a specific growth rate, the dilution rate at which a chemostat washes out, or a map distance in centimorgans.

Negative marking applies to MCQs alone: lose 1/3 mark for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark one. Neither MSQs nor NATs lose marks for a wrong answer.

Recent GATE exams have offered an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and have not permitted physical calculators. Confirm the 2027 position in the GATE 2027 information brochure, and practise with a virtual calculator in the meantime. Logarithms in sterilisation kinetics and exponentials in growth problems are slower on screen than on a handheld.

A sensible order for BT subjects

Start where later topics borrow from.

Biochemistry comes first, because Michaelis-Menten kinetics and metabolic pathways return in bioreaction engineering and microbial production. Molecular Biology and Genetics follow; replication, transcription, translation and gene regulation underpin cloning, molecular tools and every transgenic organism in Section 5.

Run Engineering Mathematics alongside from week one. Apart from its own 13 marks, differential equations drive growth kinetics and control, and statistics turns up in data questions.

Then take the engineering block in order: rate laws and reactors, then separations, then process control. Recombinant DNA technology and the analytical and computational tools are much easier once molecular biology is secure. Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology are broad and descriptive, so read them steadily rather than in one burst. Plant, animal and microbial biotechnology goes last. It draws on almost everything above.

General Aptitude needs only 20 to 30 minutes, three or four times a week, from the start.

GATE BT in 14 weeks

Written for about 4 to 5 focused hours a day; with fewer, spread each row over more weeks.

Weeks Focus Finish the block with
1 Biochemistry: biomolecules, membranes, enzymes and enzyme kinetics; linear algebra Michaelis-Menten and inhibition numericals
2 Biochemistry: metabolism, photosynthesis and respiration; calculus Pathway and ATP-yield questions
3 Molecular Biology: replication, transcription, translation, regulation, RNAi, repair A timed mixed test
4 Genetics and Evolutionary Biology; probability and statistics Mapping, pedigree and population genetics problems
5 Bioreaction Engineering: rate laws, ideal reactors, growth kinetics; differential equations Reactor and Monod-type numericals
6 Immobilisation, diffusion effects, fed-batch and continuous culture, scale-up; numerical methods Thiele modulus and chemostat questions
7 Media, sterilisation, filtration, centrifugation, chromatography Sterilisation and separation numericals
8 Extraction, adsorption, drying, measurement, controllers Control and separation questions
9 Recombinant DNA technology and molecular tools Cloning strategy and PCR questions
10 Microbiology and Cell Biology Operon and signalling questions
11 Immunology; analytical and computational tools Immunoassay and alignment questions
12 Plant, Animal and Microbial Biotechnology Tissue culture and production questions
13 Three full mocks; weak-topic repair An error log sorted by subject
14 Three mocks, equation sheets, light revision A calm last week

Keep one revision session a week from week 3 onwards. Immunology terms fade quickly if you leave them for six weeks.

Preparing around lab work, a project or a research job

Final-year B.Tech and M.Sc. students have practicals and a dissertation; others already work in labs or industry. With two to three weekday hours plus longer weekends, stretch the timetable to 24 to 28 weeks.

Give weekdays to one subject. Use weekends for mixed questions from past papers, so you switch between a reactor problem and a genetics cross the way the real paper makes you.

Bench work can double as revision. Each time you run a PCR, a Western blot or a column, ask what the principle is, what each reagent does and what would fail if you changed one step.

Subject-by-subject strategy for GATE BT

Engineering Mathematics

Thirteen fixed marks, and the part B.Sc. graduates fear most. Start in week one. Typical drills: eigenvalues of a 2 x 2 or 3 x 3 matrix, a first-order ODE for exponential growth, a Laplace transform, a Poisson or normal probability, a regression line, and Simpson's rule on tabulated data.

Biochemistry

Draw glycolysis, the citric acid cycle and fatty acid oxidation from memory, with regulatory enzymes and ATP yields. Then enzyme kinetics: Km and Vmax from a Lineweaver-Burk plot, and how competitive, uncompetitive and mixed inhibition shift each one.

Microbiology

Cell walls, growth curves and generation-time calculations, antibiotics and resistance, viruses. For the lac, trp and ara operons, work through combinations of inducer, repressor and mutation until you can predict expression without looking.

Immunology

Heavy on terms. Build comparison tables: innate versus adaptive cells, antibody classes, MHC class I versus class II, the four hypersensitivity types. Antibody diversity and hybridomas also lead into animal biotechnology and immunoassays.

Genetics and Evolutionary Biology

Numbers live here too. Practise dihybrid crosses, epistatic ratios, recombination frequency and map distance, and Hardy-Weinberg frequencies. Learn drift, selection and speciation definitions precisely.

Cell Biology and Molecular Biology

Cell cycle checkpoints, signal transduction, protein trafficking, and the central dogma with its regulation. Lay prokaryotic and eukaryotic replication, transcription and translation side by side and note every difference.

Bioreaction Engineering

The most numerical subject on the paper. Learn the design equations for batch, mixed flow and plug flow reactors, Monod growth kinetics, yield coefficients, chemostat balances including washout, and the Thiele modulus and effectiveness factor for immobilised enzymes. Check units in every line.

Upstream and Downstream Processing

Del factor and sterilisation time, filtration and centrifugation, extraction and drying, and the separating principle behind ion exchange, gel filtration, hydrophobic interaction and affinity chromatography. Process control is listed too: first and second order systems, P, I and D action, and controller tuning. Treat it as a normal chapter.

Plant, Animal and Microbial Biotechnology

Short notes per technique: tissue culture and regeneration, protoplast fusion, gene transfer into plants, anchorage-dependent culture, hybridomas, transgenic and knock-out animals, and industrial production of enzymes, antibiotics and biofuels. The GATE ES preparation guide is worth a look if bioremediation and environmental microbiology appeal to you as a second subject.

Recombinant DNA Technology and Tools

Vectors from plasmids to YACs, libraries, cloning strategies, PCR, sequencing, blotting and CRISPR-Cas, then the principle of each microscopy and spectroscopy method. In bioinformatics, know how a scoring matrix drives an alignment. Biosensors, imaging and tissue engineering connect BT with biomedical work, which the how to prepare for GATE BM guide explores.

General Aptitude

Fifteen marks in roughly 20 minutes. Practise against a clock.

Using official GATE BT past papers

Recent BT question papers and answer keys are on the official GATE 2026 download page, hosted by IIT Guwahati.

Go topic-wise first: after week 6, for example, solve every chemostat and immobilised-enzyme question you can find. In the last month, change to complete papers in a three-hour sitting, marked against the official key.

Log every error with its cause (missing concept, arithmetic, units, misreading) and reattempt the log after a week.

A revised 2027 topic can be rare in older papers. Two-component systems, ChIP sequencing and controller tuning still need a textbook chapter each.

Mock tests and timing for BT

Sit six to eight full mocks in the last five weeks, at the clock time of your actual session.

On exam day, take General Aptitude first and aim to bank its 15 marks in about 20 minutes. Next, sweep through the factual biology questions you can settle in under a minute. Then do the calculations you are confident about: enzyme and growth kinetics, reactors, sterilisation, genetics, mathematics. Anything long or unfamiliar gets flagged for the end.

Guess an MCQ only if you have ruled out two options. Enter every NAT you have worked out, since a wrong one costs nothing. In an MSQ, tick only what you are sure of; a single wrong tick voids the answer.

Common BT preparation mistakes

  • Treating BT as a reading paper. Mathematics and bioreaction engineering need weekly problem practice.
  • Skipping process control as "chemical engineering". It is on the 2027 BT syllabus.
  • Memorising technique names without their principles.
  • Leaving immunology and plant and animal biotechnology to the final month.
  • Unit slips in kinetics, sterilisation and reactor questions.
  • Guessing on MSQs.
  • Owning five biochemistry books.

Four weeks before the exam

No new topics now.

Take two or three full mocks a week, spending as long on the analysis as on the test. Rework your error log. Condense each subject onto one page: kinetic and reactor equations, pathway summaries, immunology tables, vector features.

Short topics fit well into this month: microscopy and spectroscopy principles, immunoassays, bioinformatics databases and scoring matrices. Keep up a timed General Aptitude set every day, and in the final week settle into the sleep pattern your exam session needs.

After GATE BT: admissions and score validity

A GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced.

With it you can apply for M.Tech, MS (by research) and PhD places. IITs make M.Tech offers through COAP, and NITs, IIITs and many other institutes admit through CCMT; IISc and several IITs also run their own research admissions. Some public sector organisations recruit using GATE scores, and each notification states which papers it accepts, so read it before you assume BT qualifies.

To compare BT with neighbouring papers, look through all 30 GATE papers and the wider set of GATE preparation guides.
