Who GATE EY is for
EY, Ecology and Evolution, is meant for students of ecology, evolutionary biology, zoology, botany, wildlife science, environmental biology and neighbouring life sciences. It asks how organisms interact with each other and with their surroundings, and how populations change across generations.
Do not expect a memory test. A question might show a survivorship curve and ask which life history it suggests, give genotype counts and ask whether the population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, or offer a small table of species counts and ask for a diversity index. Phylogenetic trees, foraging models and conservation policy all appear, as does basic probability and statistics applied to biological data.

The GATE EY 2027 syllabus
Five sections, plus the General Aptitude section shared by all papers. Use the official EY syllabus PDF as your checklist; what follows is a reading guide to it.
Section 1: Ecology
Fundamental Concepts covers abiotic and biotic components, levels of organisation from individual to biome, niches and habitats, functional traits, and ecophysiology (adaptation, homeostasis, acclimation). Population Ecology deals with density-dependent and density-independent growth, meta-populations and age structure. Under Interactions come mutualism, symbiosis, commensalism, competition, parasitism and predation, Lotka-Volterra two-species models, trophic levels and direct and indirect effects. Community Ecology lists assembly, structure and succession, dispersal and environmental filtering, alpha, beta and gamma diversity, richness, evenness and diversity indices, species-area relationships, diversity gradients and island biogeography. Ecosystem Structure and Function covers productivity, food webs, energy flow, the carbon and nitrogen cycles, stability and resilience, global biomes and biogeographic zones, and the flora, fauna and biogeography of India.
Section 2: Evolution
Seven parts. Fundamentals runs from Lamarckism and Darwinism to the Modern Synthesis, with variation, heritability, fitness and stabilising, directional and disruptive selection. Diversity of Life covers the origin and history of life, palaeobiological evidence, and classical taxonomy versus cladistics. Life History Theory deals with allocation, trade-offs, r/K selection, semelparity and iteroparity. Interactions brings in co-evolution, mimicry, crypsis and host-parasite dynamics. Population and Quantitative Genetics includes Mendelian genetics, Hardy-Weinberg, drift, one-locus two-allele selection, gene flow and FST, polygenic traits, plasticity, heritability, epistasis and epigenetic inheritance. Molecular Evolution and Phylogenetics covers mutation rates, molecular clocks, neutral processes, chromosomal and genome evolution (hybridisation, ploidy, introgression), parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods, and phylogeography. Macroevolution closes with species concepts, speciation and extinction, adaptive radiation, convergence, biogeographic processes and continental drift.
Section 3: Mathematics and Quantitative Ecology
Mathematics and Statistics in Ecology: linear, quadratic, exponential and logarithmic functions, derivatives and slopes, permutations and combinations, basic and conditional probability, binomial, normal and Poisson distributions, descriptive statistics and confidence intervals. Study Design and Statistical Methods: hypothesis testing, p-values, Type I and Type II errors, the t-test and chi-square test, correlation, linear regression and ANOVA.
Section 4: Behavioural Ecology
Classical Ethology and Sensory Ecology takes in proximate and ultimate explanations, innate and learnt behaviour, neuroethology, behavioural endocrinology, communication, movement and navigation. Foraging and Reproduction covers optimal foraging, territoriality, mating systems, sexual selection and sexual conflict (runaway, good genes, the handicap principle) and parental care. Social Behaviour looks at the costs and benefits of group living, scramble and contest competition, kin selection and altruism.
Section 5: Applied Ecology & Evolution
Biodiversity and Conservation: biodiversity and ecosystem function, ecosystem services, endemism, hotspots, protected areas, global initiatives (COP, IUCN, CBD, CITES), conservation genetics, inbreeding depression, DNA fingerprinting and barcoding. Disease Ecology and Evolution: epidemiology, zoonotic diseases, antibiotic resistance. Global Change: causes, consequences, adaptation and mitigation of climate change, threats to biodiversity, invasive species.
Functional traits, phylogeography and the biogeography of India are the lines most often missed on a quick read.
How the EY paper works
Every one of the 65 questions carries 1 or 2 marks. General Aptitude has 10 of them, worth 15 marks. The remaining 55 are spread over the five EY sections and carry 85 marks. EY has no separate Engineering Mathematics share; the mathematics you need sits inside Section 3 of its own syllabus.
You will see MCQs with a single right option, MSQs where one or more options can be right, and NATs where you type a number. A wrong MCQ costs 1/3 of a mark on a 1-mark question and 2/3 on a 2-mark question. MSQs and NATs carry no negative marks, but an MSQ scores nothing unless your selection is exactly right.
Many EY questions start from a figure. Expect isocline plots, life tables, small contingency tables or a phylogeny, followed by a question about what they imply.
Recent GATE exams have provided an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and have not allowed physical calculators. The information brochure for GATE 2027 will confirm this year's rules. Practise your growth-rate and chi-square arithmetic on a virtual calculator so the interface is familiar.
Where to start preparing for GATE EY
Several EY topics run on the same few ideas, so begin with those ideas.
Natural selection, fitness, heritability and Hardy-Weinberg come first. They are the logic behind life history theory, co-evolution, behavioural ecology and conservation genetics, and they are where the calculations start. Run the Section 3 mathematics in parallel: exponential and logistic growth, logarithms, slopes and simple probability turn up in population ecology, genetics and molecular clocks.
Next, population and community ecology. Growth models, Lotka-Volterra competition and predation, diversity indices and island biogeography are all model-driven. Ecosystems, nutrient cycles, biomes and the biogeography of India are more descriptive and go well together.
Phylogenetics and macroevolution make more sense once population genetics is secure. Statistical methods (hypothesis tests, p-values, regression, ANOVA) are best practised on realistic data after you know the biology behind it. Behavioural ecology applies evolutionary reasoning to individuals, and applied ecology draws on everything, so these two close the syllabus.
General Aptitude: 20 to 30 minutes, three or four days a week, from week one.
A 14-week GATE EY study plan
Assumes 4 to 5 focused hours a day and a degree that touched on ecology and evolution. With less time, lengthen the blocks.
| Weeks | Topics | Practise until |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Evolution fundamentals; functions, logarithms, slopes | You can explain each type of selection with an example |
| 2 | Mendelian and population genetics: Hardy-Weinberg, drift, selection, gene flow, FST | Allele-frequency numericals are error-free |
| 3 | Quantitative genetics, plasticity, epistasis; probability and distributions | Heritability and probability problems feel easy |
| 4 | Ecology fundamentals; population growth, age structure, meta-populations | Life tables and growth rates come out right |
| 5 | Species interactions, Lotka-Volterra, trophic effects | You can sketch isoclines and predict the outcome |
| 6 | Community assembly, succession, diversity indices, species-area, island biogeography | Shannon and Simpson indices are quick by hand |
| 7 | Ecosystems, cycles, biomes, Indian biogeography, flora and fauna | India's biogeographic zones fit on one page |
| 8 | Diversity of life, life history, co-evolution, host-parasite interactions | r/K and trade-off questions are routine |
| 9 | Molecular evolution, phylogenetics, phylogeography, macroevolution | Tree reading and clock calculations are reliable |
| 10 | t-test, chi-square, correlation, regression, ANOVA | You pick the right test every time |
| 11 | Ethology, foraging, mating systems, sexual selection, social behaviour | Hamilton's rule and marginal value questions are quick |
| 12 | Conservation, disease ecology, global change | COP, IUCN, CBD and CITES are clear in your notes |
| 13 | Three timed official papers, weak-topic repair | Your error log is sorted by section |
| 14 | Two or three timed papers, definition and formula sheets | Nothing new is being started |
Set aside one session a week from week 3 to revisit earlier topics.
Preparing for EY between fieldwork and lectures
EY candidates are often final-year students with dissertations and field seasons, or graduates on research projects with irregular hours. With 2 to 3 hours on weekdays and longer weekends, spread the plan over 24 to 28 weeks.
Field data are an advantage here. If your project involves quadrats, transects or species counts, calculate richness, evenness and diversity indices on your own data, and run a chi-square or t-test on it. That practice transfers directly to EY questions.
Keep weekdays for one topic each, weekends for mixed past-paper questions, and a fixed daily slot even when the field season makes it short.
GATE EY, BT or XL: choosing your paper
Life-science graduates often weigh EY against Biotechnology (BT) and Life Sciences (XL). Under the official GATE 2027 list, BT or XL may be the second paper when EY is primary, so writing two is an option.
EY suits you if ecology, evolution, behaviour, wildlife or conservation research is where you want to work, and you enjoy models, data and field biology.
XL fits a classical life-science background. It has a common Chemistry section and two optional sections chosen from Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology and Food Technology. The GATE XL preparation guide explains how those sections are chosen.
BT leans towards molecular biology, bioprocesses and biotechnology; compare its scope in how to prepare for GATE BT.
Check which GATE papers your target programmes accept before you decide.
Section-by-section strategy for GATE EY
Ecology
The broadest section. Learn exponential and logistic growth both as equations and as curves, and be able to read the result of competition or predation from Lotka-Volterra isoclines: coexistence, exclusion or oscillation. In community ecology, compute richness, evenness, Shannon and Simpson indices by hand, and know what a species-area curve and island biogeography each predict. Students often mix up alpha, beta and gamma diversity; define each with one example. Keep a separate sheet for biomes, biogeographic zones and the flora, fauna and biogeography of India.
Evolution
Population genetics gives most of the calculations. Practise Hardy-Weinberg frequencies, the change in allele frequency after one generation of selection, drift in small populations and FST between subpopulations. For quantitative genetics, understand narrow-sense heritability and the breeder's equation idea of response to selection. With trees, practise identifying monophyletic groups and sister taxa, separating homology from homoplasy, and counting the minimum number of changes under parsimony.
Mathematics and Quantitative Ecology
Unfamiliar to many biology students, though the content is basic. Functions, slopes, permutations and combinations, conditional probability and the binomial, Poisson and normal distributions are all school or first-year level. The methods part asks you to choose between a t-test, chi-square, correlation, regression and ANOVA for a given design, interpret a p-value correctly, and tell Type I from Type II errors.
Behavioural Ecology
Ask two questions of every behaviour: how does it work (proximate), and why did it evolve (ultimate)? Then cover optimal foraging and the marginal value theorem, territoriality, mating systems, runaway, good genes and handicap models of sexual selection, parental care, and kin selection through Hamilton's rule, rB > C.
Applied Ecology and Evolution
Know endemism, hotspots and protected areas, what COP, IUCN, CBD and CITES do, and how inbreeding depression, conservation genetics and DNA barcoding are applied. Disease ecology covers basic epidemiology, zoonoses and the evolution of antibiotic resistance. Global change brings climate impacts, invasive species and mitigation.
General Aptitude
Fifteen marks in about twenty minutes. Practise it against the clock.
GATE EY previous year papers
Recent EY question papers with answer keys are on the official GATE 2026 download page at IIT Guwahati. Use every EY paper you can get.
As you finish each block of the plan, solve the matching questions. In the final month, sit whole papers to time and mark them against the official key. For every error, write down whether it was a concept gap, a slip in calculation, a misread graph or an unfamiliar term, and redo it a week later.
Prepare every 2027 syllabus topic from textbooks, including those that have not yet appeared in a past paper.
Timed practice and exam technique for EY
Aim for five to seven full timed papers in the last five weeks, written at your session's time of day. Official past papers are the most trustworthy material.
On the day:
- Aptitude first, about twenty minutes, for 15 steady marks.
- A fast pass through one-minute conceptual questions on evolution, behaviour and conservation.
- A second pass for calculations you can set up: allele frequencies, growth rates, diversity indices, test statistics.
- Long data-interpretation questions last.
Because wrong MCQs cost marks, guess only after ruling out two options. Worked MSQ and NAT answers should always be entered. Check the rounding instruction on each NAT.

Traps in GATE EY preparation
Avoiding the mathematics is the commonest. Section 3 is a full section, and growth, genetics and diversity questions elsewhere use the same skills.
Learning ecology as a list of definitions. Questions usually hand you a graph or data and ask what follows.
Confusing proximate and ultimate explanations in behaviour questions.
Weak tree reading. Practise on trees you have never seen before.
Skipping India-specific content such as biogeographic zones and Indian flora and fauna, which the syllabus names explicitly.
Guessing MSQs. A single wrong option scores zero for the question.
The last month before GATE EY
No new topics in the final four weeks. Instead:
- two or three timed papers a week, each reviewed for as long as it took to write
- every error-log question solved again
- one sheet each for growth and competition equations, population genetics formulas, diversity indices, and which statistical test fits which design
- a quick run through conservation initiatives, biomes, Indian biogeography and zoonoses
- aptitude daily
- regular sleep in the final week
After GATE EY: research programmes and beyond
A valid EY score lets you apply to postgraduate and research programmes that accept this paper. GATE scores are used for M.Tech, MS and PhD admissions, with IIT M.Tech offers through COAP and NIT and IIIT admissions through CCMT. For EY candidates, research programmes in ecology, evolution and related life sciences are the more usual path. Each institute's notice lists the GATE papers it accepts, so check before applying. Some public sector organisations also use GATE scores and list eligible papers in their own notifications. A GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced.
For a wider view, see all 30 GATE papers and the full collection of GATE preparation guides. If you are still deciding on a second paper, the GATE BT preparation guide and the guide to GATE XL Life Sciences are the two to compare.
