What GATE XL is
XL is the Life Sciences paper of GATE, meant for students of the biological and food sciences. Its score is used for M.Tech, MS and PhD admissions at the IITs, IISc, NITs and other institutes.
XL is built from sections. General Aptitude and Chemistry (XL0) are common to everyone. After that you answer any two of five optional sections: XL1 Biochemistry, XL2 Botany, XL3 Microbiology, XL4 Zoology and XL5 Food Technology. A biochemist and a food technologist can sit the same paper and share only the first 40 marks, which is why so much of XL strategy is about which sections you pick.

General Aptitude (15 marks)
Verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial aptitude, common to every GATE paper.
How GATE XL is scored
All 65 questions carry 1 or 2 marks. Ten are General Aptitude, worth 15 marks. XL0 Chemistry, answered by everyone, brings 25. Your two optional sections, picked from XL1 to XL5 during the exam, are worth 30 each.
XL has no Engineering Mathematics section. Its 85 subject marks contain no separate maths share, though Chemistry and some sections still involve calculation.
Question formats are MCQ (one right option), MSQ (one or more right options, and you must select exactly the right set to score) and NAT (type a number). Only MCQs carry a penalty, of 1/3 for a wrong 1-mark answer and 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark answer.
On calculators, recent GATE exams have offered an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and kept physical calculators out. The GATE 2027 information brochure will confirm the arrangement. Practise pH, Nernst and D-value sums on a virtual calculator anyway.
Picking your two GATE XL sections
The question paper pattern lets you select your two optional sections in the exam itself. Make the real choice months earlier, guided by your degree and by what the sections share.
| Your degree | First section | Good second section |
|---|---|---|
| Biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology | Biochemistry (XL1) | Microbiology (XL3) or Zoology (XL4), whichever you studied more |
| Microbiology | Microbiology (XL3) | Biochemistry (XL1) or Food Technology (XL5) |
| Botany, plant sciences | Botany (XL2) | Biochemistry (XL1) or Microbiology (XL3) |
| Zoology, animal sciences | Zoology (XL4) | Biochemistry (XL1) or Botany (XL2) |
| Food technology, food science | Food Technology (XL5) | Microbiology (XL3) or Biochemistry (XL1) |
On overlap, XL1 and XL3 both cover metabolism (glycolysis, the TCA cycle, the pentose phosphate pathway, oxidative phosphorylation) along with gene regulation and DNA repair. XL1 and XL4 share biomolecules, replication, transcription, translation and core metabolism. Botany and Zoology meet in Mendelian genetics, linkage and mapping, and ecology. Microbiology and Food Technology share microbial growth and death, food-borne pathogens and fermentation. And XL0 itself overlaps XL1 on amino acids, proteins, nucleic acids, enzyme kinetics, chromatography and spectroscopy.
Overlap saves weeks, but never take a section you dislike for it. Read both.
Where to start for GATE XL
Start with Chemistry, and read its biomolecules part alongside your biology. XL0 is fixed at 25 marks for everyone, and its later units (enzyme kinetics, biomolecules, chromatography, spectroscopy) run straight into Biochemistry and Microbiology.
Next comes the optional section you know best, and then the second one, beginning with whatever units it shares with the first so the overlap works for you. Physical chemistry numericals (buffers, Nernst, rate constants, free energy) run through the whole plan in small daily doses, because a single push the month before rarely holds.
Give General Aptitude half an hour, a few days a week.
Fourteen weeks of GATE XL preparation
Assumes four to five focused hours a day. Section A means your stronger optional section, Section B the other one.
| Weeks | Focus | Close the block with |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chemistry: atomic structure, bonding, s, p and d block, bioinorganic | Past-paper Chemistry questions on these units |
| 2 | Chemistry: equilibria, electrochemistry, kinetics, thermodynamics | Buffer pH, cell potential and rate constant sums until error-free |
| 3 | Chemistry: mechanisms, stereochemistry, biomolecules | A timed Chemistry test |
| 4–6 | Section A, one third of its syllabus per week | Section A past-paper questions each week, a timed test in week 6 |
| 7 | Section B: units shared with Section A or Chemistry | Section B past-paper questions |
| 8–9 | Section B: the remaining units | A timed Section B test |
| 10 | Chemistry revision; weak units in both sections | A mixed timed test |
| 11 | Numerical units across your sections: growth kinetics, Hardy-Weinberg, D and F values, mass balances | A NAT-only practice set |
| 12 | Two full past papers; error-log repair | Mistakes logged under XL0 and your two sections |
| 13 | Three full mocks | Revision notes per section |
| 14 | Two mocks, summary sheets | A calm final week |
From week 4, give Chemistry one revision session a week.
GATE XL with practicals, a dissertation or lab work
With two or three hours on weekdays and more at weekends, spread the plan over 24 to 28 weeks.
Keep weekday sessions to one section and use weekends for mixed past-paper questions. When your semester covers a GATE unit, study it in the same weeks.
GATE XL strategy for each section
XL0 Chemistry
Treat it as three blocks. Physical chemistry is where the NATs live: a buffer pH, a cell EMF, an activation energy. Inorganic is reasoning from structure. Organic means drawing mechanism arrows and assigning R and S until both are automatic.
XL1 Biochemistry
For each pathway, know the key enzymes, regulatory steps, energy yield and linked disorder. Michaelis-Menten parameters and Henderson-Hasselbalch give the numerical questions. For techniques, know what each one separates or detects and on what basis.
XL2 Botany
Nine units, mostly descriptive. Build tables: plant families with their diagnostic features, hormones with their effects, crop diseases with their causal organisms. C3, C4 and CAM comparisons and the ABC model of flowering lend themselves to MSQs.
XL3 Microbiology
Ten units, from Pasteur to metagenomics. Practise generation-time calculations from cell counts until they are quick. Tabulate antibiotics by target and resistance mechanism. Put transformation, conjugation and transduction side by side in one table.
XL4 Zoology
Eleven compact units. Genetics is the problem-solving part: dihybrid crosses, map distances from recombination frequencies, Hardy-Weinberg frequencies. Physiology, development and behaviour reward labelled diagrams. The GATE EY 2027 preparation guide goes deeper into evolution and ecology.
XL5 Food Technology
The most engineering-like section. Food engineering (mass and energy balances, heat and mass transfer, drying, psychrometry) and thermal death kinetics are numerical; a typical question asks for a process time from D and Z values. Keep food products notes by commodity.
General Aptitude
Fifteen marks in roughly twenty minutes. Practise it timed.
GATE XL past papers and the old section codes
Recent XL papers and answer keys are in the GATE 2026 question paper archive at IIT Guwahati.
One trap: in GATE 2026 the XL sections carried letter codes, P for Chemistry and Q to U for Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology and Food Technology. The 2027 codes are XL0 to XL5 in the same order. Keep the mapping handy when you open older papers.
Solve only Chemistry and your two sections. Take each unit's questions from several recent papers as soon as you finish it. In the final month, switch to whole papers in a single three-hour sitting. Check every answer against the official key, note each mistake together with the reason it happened, and then solve that question again a week later.
GATE XL mocks and how to run the three hours
Sit at least six full mocks over the last five weeks, at your session's time of day.
In the hall, select your two sections carefully and confirm them before starting. Then do General Aptitude, which should take about 20 minutes. A first sweep picks up one-minute factual questions, a second handles numericals and long MSQs, and doubtful ones wait for the end.
MCQs are the only questions with a penalty, so guess on them only after striking out two options. Enter every NAT value you have worked out, since a wrong one costs nothing.
Textbooks for GATE XL

For video lectures, NPTEL has free IIT and IISc courses in chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and food engineering.
Pairing GATE XL with BT, CY or EY
The official two-paper list lets XL candidates add BT, CY or EY. Each one leans on a different part of XL.
Biotechnology suits those taking Biochemistry or Microbiology, since BT's genetics, cellular and molecular biology and its recombinant DNA section build on the same ground, though BT also has Engineering Mathematics and biological engineering topics that XL does not. The GATE BT preparation guide sets out that syllabus.
Chemistry (CY), a full paper of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, fits candidates whose strongest section is XL0. See how to prepare for GATE CY 2027.
Ecology and Evolution (EY) is the natural partner for Zoology and Botany students, with ecology, evolution, behavioural ecology and quantitative ecology at its core.
Where GATE XL candidates slip
Treating Chemistry as an afterthought is the most expensive mistake on this paper. XL0 carries 25 marks for everyone, and no section choice gets you out of it.
Changing optional sections in December wastes the weeks already spent, and preparing three "to be safe" wastes more, as only two count.
Skipping numericals in pH, kinetics, microbial growth or food engineering throws away some of the most reliable marks.
On MSQs, one wrong option voids the question. And check that you are working from the official 2027 PDFs, which list topics such as genome editing, next-generation sequencing and microplastics in food that older notes may lack.
Your last month before GATE XL
Four weeks before the exam, close the syllabus.
Sit two or three full mocks a week, review each for as long as it took, and re-solve the error log.
Condense each section to a page or two of formulas, pathway maps or tables. Do timed General Aptitude every day. In the final week, keep regular sleep and move your study hours so that you are most alert at exactly the hour when your exam session is scheduled to run.
What you can do after GATE XL
A GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced, which gives you more than one admission cycle to use it.
IITs make M.Tech offers through COAP; NITs, IIITs and many other institutes admit through CCMT. IISc and several IITs also run their own MS and PhD admissions. Some public sector organisations use GATE scores in recruitment and publish their own notifications naming eligible papers and process, so read each one directly.
To compare XL with other papers, see all 30 GATE papers and the rest of the GATE preparation guides.
