In the 2026-27 cycle, admission to the 30 category-wise TA seats was purely on GATE score with a valid GATE score in CSE, and offers were made through COAP; 3 supernumerary seats went to IIT/IISc graduates with CGPA 8.0+ on CGPA alone.

The campus and the CSE department

IIT Dharwad gives its address as Permanent Campus, Chikkamalligawad, Dharwad 580 011, Karnataka. Its contact page notes that Hubballi and Dharwad are twin cities about 20 km apart, that Hubballi is a major railway junction with daily trains to Bengaluru, and that Hubballi airport is about 30 minutes from the campus.

For DA and CSE aspirants, the unit that matters is the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Through GATE it runs three PG routes: the M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, the M.Tech by Research (M.Tech[R]) in CSE, and the PhD in CSE. The institute's programme menu also lists an Executive M.Tech in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, which sits outside the GATE routes covered on this page.

IIT Dharwad warns on its admission pages that it offers no management quota and authorises no agent to arrange admission. All offers come through official channels.

M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering: GATE CS through COAP

The M.Tech admission brochure for 2026-27 (Version 01) says the CSE department invited applications for the M.Tech in CSE under the Teaching Assistantship (TA) category only, with students admitted through COAP.

Who can apply

The qualifying degree can be a B.Tech/B.E. in CSE, a B.Tech/B.E. in an allied branch (the department decides what counts as allied), an MCA, or an M.Sc. in Computer Science. You need 60% aggregate or CGPA 6.0, with a 5% relaxation for SC/ST/PwD. A valid GATE score in CSE is essential for everyone except IIT B.Tech and IISc BS graduates in CSE or allied branches with CPI/CGPA of 8.0 or more. The brochure does not list GATE DA for this programme.

How seats are filled

The brochure lists 33 TA seats: 30 distributed by social category and filled purely on GATE score, and 3 supernumerary seats for IIT/IISc graduates with CGPA 8.0 or more, who are selected on CGPA alone. Higher GATE scores get seats within each category. Ties go first to the higher B.Tech/B.E. aggregate, then to the earlier date of birth.

For screening applications, the brochure sets a soft GATE cutoff of 600 for General and EWS, 540 for OBC-NCL and 400 for SC/ST/PwD. TA students received ₹12,400 a month under MoE norms and assist for 8 hours a week.

The GATE DA route: M.Tech by Research in Computer Science

The M.Tech[R] in CSE is the IIT Dharwad programme where the brochure explicitly accepts a valid GATE score in Computer Science and Engineering or Data Science and AI. The qualifying degrees are the same as for the M.Tech: B.Tech/B.E. in CSE or a related branch, MCA, or M.Sc. in Computer Science.

A valid GATE score is essential in the TA category, again with an exception for IIT/IISc graduates with CGPA 8.0 or more. The minimum GATE score for eligibility is 500 for General/EWS, 450 for OBC-NCL and 333 for SC/ST/PwD. GATE is not mandatory for the External (EX) and Sponsored (SP) categories.

Selection does not run through COAP. It runs in two online rounds: the first tests aptitude, programming, discrete structures and data structures and algorithms; candidates who clear it face a panel interview based on the research area they picked. The listed areas include machine learning and AI (NLP, LLMs, computer vision, reinforcement learning), systems for machine learning, networks and security, computer systems, and theoretical computer science. The TA stipend is ₹12,400 a month for up to 2½ years or until the thesis defence.

2026-27 dates, including the Spring round that is open now

IIT Dharwad says its M.Tech dates follow the COAP timeline and that you must register on COAP and note your registration number before applying on the institute portal.

The M.Tech[R] Spring round lists TA, EX and SP categories in CSE, with instruction beginning on 04/01/2027. The M.Tech page also carried a notice for a 2026-27 merit-based additional round. Watch the M.Tech admissions page for the 2027-28 cycle once GATE 2027 results are out.

Official GATE cut-offs for M.Tech CSE, 2026-27

IIT Dharwad publishes round-wise opening and closing GATE scores on its admission cut-off history page. For the 2026-27 M.Tech in CSE (Paper CS), the summary row reads:

Category Opening Closing
GEN 739 601
EWS 678 601
OBC 697 593
SC 625 446
ST 466 419

These are GATE scores out of 1000. The same document shows offers running from Round 1 to Additional Round 12, with the GEN closing score at 702 in Round 1 and 601 by Additional Round 12. No PwD offers are shown. Cut-offs move every year with the number of applicants and their scores, so read these as one year's record rather than a target.

PhD in CSE

The PhD brochure for Autumn 2026-27 (Version 1.1) asks for an M.Tech or equivalent in CSE or a related stream, or an M.Sc. in Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics with a valid GATE score or a UGC/CSIR NET JRF/LS scorecard. The qualifying degree needs 60% or CGPA 6.0, relaxed for SC/ST/PwD.

Selection follows the same two-round pattern as the M.Tech[R]: an online interview on aptitude, programming, discrete structures, and data structures and algorithms, then a panel interview by research area. The brochure's syllabus covers discrete maths, linear algebra, calculus, probability, computer organisation, operating systems and computer networks.

Planning your GATE attempt around IIT Dharwad

If you write GATE CS, the M.Tech in CSE is decided almost entirely by your score, and the 2026-27 closing score for GEN was 601. If you write GATE DA, the M.Tech[R] is the CSE route that names your paper, and the interviews lean on programming, discrete maths and algorithms, so keep those sharp alongside the DA syllabus.

The GATE DA page and GATE CSE page lay out each syllabus, and the GATE DA 2027 guide and GATE CSE 2027 guide cover planning. Use the PYQ page and practice to work through past papers, and see the institutes page for other campuses we cover, such as IIT Hyderabad.
