GATE 2027 in Mysuru: Exam City, IISc Zone and Back-up Choices
Mysuru is an IISc zone GATE 2027 exam city. Which Karnataka and Kerala back-ups fit, why Ooty and Coimbatore cannot, and the key dates.

Mysuru sits with the rest of Karnataka
On the official exam-city list, Mysuru appears under Karnataka in the IISc zone. Karnataka has 19 exam cities and all of them are IISc zone, from Mysuru and Mandya to Bidar and Kalaburagi.
That makes Karnataka easy. Any Karnataka city you can reach is a legal back-up.
You pick cities, never centres. "Mysuru" on your form means GATE may put you in any centre it uses for Mysuru, and you find out which from the admit card. Keep in mind that the list is tentative. GATE can remove or add a city and can allot you somewhere outside your six choices if needed. GATE 2027 has no centres outside India.
Building the six from Mysuru
All six cities must be from one zone. For a student who will spend February in Mysuru, a reasonable IISc-zone form looks like this:
- Mysuru
- Mandya
- Hassan
- Bengaluru South
- Bengaluru North
- Chikkamagaluru or Tumakuru
Bengaluru North and Bengaluru South are two separate entries on the list. If you want Bengaluru as a fallback, decide which half suits you, or use both and take two slots. The Bengaluru page explains the split.
Students whose families live near Mangaluru or Udupi can use Mangaluru and Manipal - Udupi instead; the Mangaluru page covers that side. Kerala's northern cities are IISc zone too. Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod can all go on a form that starts with Mysuru.
Put the cities in the order you would honestly prefer them, and only list places where you could stay the night before a morning paper.
Ooty and Coimbatore are on the wrong side of the line
The zone rule bites at Tamil Nadu. Every Tamil Nadu exam city is IIT Madras zone. That includes the ones a Mysuru student is most likely to think of:
| Can go with Mysuru (IISc zone) | Cannot go with Mysuru (IIT Madras zone) |
|---|---|
| Mandya, Hassan, Kolar, Chikkballapur | Ooty, Coimbatore, Erode |
| Bengaluru North, Bengaluru South | Krishnagiri, Salem, Vellore |
| Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, Palakkad | Kottayam, Aluva - Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram |
So if you study in Mysuru and your home is in Coimbatore or Erode, you cannot list both cities. Decide where you will physically be on the exam weekends and fill the whole form from that zone. The Coimbatore page shows what an IIT Madras zone form looks like from western Tamil Nadu.
Kerala is split between the two zones, so check each Kerala city against the list before adding it. Thrissur, Palakkad and Angamaly are IISc; Kottayam and Aluva - Ernakulam are not.
Your zone office is IISc
IIT Madras is organising GATE 2027, but questions about Karnataka exam cities go to the IISc zone office. As listed on the official page:
- IISc, Bengaluru – 560 012: helpdesk.gate@iisc.ac.in, 080-22932644, 080-22932392, 080-22933333
Use the email address you registered with and quote your enrolment ID. Registration closed with the special window on 16 October 2026, and the data correction window on request is marked TBA, so do not assume a change of city is still possible until it opens and you have read what it allows.
Dates to note
From the official important-dates page, which says all dates are liable to change:
| What | When |
|---|---|
| City allotment notification | 4 January 2027 |
| Admit card | TBA |
| Exam days | 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 |
| Results | 19 March 2027 |
The admit card gives the centre address and reporting time. Look the centre up the day you download it. A Mysuru centre may be in a part of the city or its outskirts you have never been to, and if you were allotted Hassan or Bengaluru, plan to arrive the previous evening. Carry the printed admit card and the original photo ID you entered in the application, along with anything else the admit card lists, and follow its rules on what is allowed in the hall.
Institutes worth a look from Mysuru
Bengaluru has IISc Bengaluru and IIIT Bangalore. NITK Surathkal is in Mangaluru. IIT Dharwad and IIIT Dharwad are in Dharwad. Over the border in Kerala, NIT Calicut is in Kozhikode. Each page explains that institute's GATE routes for DA and CSE candidates, and /institutes lists the rest.
None of this depends on your zone. Writing GATE in Mysuru does not change how IISc, an NIT or an IIT outside Karnataka treats your application.
Studying for it from Mysuru
GATEiit runs no centre, office or classes in Mysuru. It is a free website, used from wherever you are.
First choose your paper: GATE DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) or GATE CSE (Computer Science and Information Technology). DA and CS are an allowed two-paper combination for 2027 if you want both. Solve past papers on /pyq and topic-wise questions on /practice. The GATE DA 2027 guide and the GATE CSE 2027 guide set out a study plan, and /guides has the rest. Each paper page links a WhatsApp group where you can ask doubts.
Every exam day is a Saturday or Sunday, so keep weekend mornings for full mocks. The GATE 2027 page and the exam-city overview have the national picture.
