The campus and the CSE department's three M.Tech programmes
NIT Calicut's address is NIT Campus P.O., Calicut 673 601, Kerala. Its 2026-27 bulletin places the campus about 22 km north-east of Kozhikode city, along the Calicut-Mukkam Road, at the foothills of the Western Ghats.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering runs three M.Tech programmes, each with a code you will see on forms:
| Code | Programme | How you get in (2026-27) |
|---|---|---|
| CS61 | Computer Science & Engineering | CCMT, GATE CS |
| CS62 | Computer Science & Engineering (Information Security) | CCMT, GATE CS |
| CS63 | Computer Science and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence & Data Analytics) | Self-sponsored or sponsored, department test/interview |
CS61 covers advanced algorithms, programming languages, operating systems design, middleware, bioinformatics and machine learning, according to the bulletin. CS62 is described as training CSE, IT and MCA graduates to design policies and techniques that secure information systems. CS63 is aimed at graduates of any engineering branch and science postgraduates with an interest in AI and data science.
The CCMT route, and why the GATE paper matters here
NIT Calicut's 2026-27 regular admissions bulletin says admission to its M.Tech programmes runs through CCMT 2026, coordinated that year by NIT Agartala, with selection by GATE score subject to eligibility and seats. The bulletin asks for 60% or 6.5 CGPA in the qualifying degree (55% or 6.0 for SC, ST and PwD) and a valid GATE score in the appropriate discipline.
Annexure 1 of that bulletin, "Eligible Degrees and GATE Mapping for M. Tech./ M. Plan. 2026-27 Admissions", is the part to read closely. For both CS61 and CS62, every listed qualifying degree is mapped to one GATE paper: Computer Science and Information Technology (CS). That list includes a B.Tech in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, but even that degree is mapped to the CS paper. The DA paper does not appear anywhere in the annexure.
So if you plan to take only GATE DA in 2027, NIT Calicut's CCMT seats in CSE were closed to you under the 2026-27 mapping. Check the 2027-28 bulletin when it is out, since mappings are revised each year.
Seats and reporting in the 2026-27 cycle
The bulletin's 2026-27 seat matrix gives each programme 25 seats:
- CS61: OPEN 9, OPEN-PwD 1, EWS 3, SC 4, ST 2, OBC 6.
- CS62: OPEN 10, EWS 2, SC 4, ST 2, OBC 6, OBC-PwD 1.
Candidates who froze a CCMT seat at NIT Calicut completed data entry and balance fee payment on the Institute Management System, then reported in person at Bhaskara Hall. The 2026 reporting schedule put the Department of Computer Science & Engineering on 6 August 2026 at 9:30 am, with orientation and classes from 12 August 2026. Final-semester candidates had until 30 September 2026 to submit their provisional degree certificate.
CCMT 2026 GATE scores for CS61 and CS62
From CCMT's Maximum and Minimum GATE Score of CCMT Counselling 2026 table, copied as printed (GATE scores out of 1000):
| Programme | Round | Category | Max | Min |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Science & Engineering | Round 1 | OPEN | 735 | 714 |
| Computer Science & Engineering | Round 1 | OBC-NCL | 686 | 674 |
| Computer Science & Engineering | Round 1 | EWS | 698 | 689 |
| Computer Science & Engineering | Round 3 | OPEN | 682 | 682 |
| Computer Science & Engineering (Information Security) | Round 1 | OPEN | 712 | 689 |
| Computer Science & Engineering (Information Security) | Round 1 | OBC-NCL | 673 | 655 |
| Computer Science & Engineering (Information Security) | Round 1 | EWS | 686 | 682 |
| Computer Science & Engineering (Information Security) | Round 3 | OPEN | 665 | 653 |
Both programmes are a single group, G1 in Round 1 and "Group 1" in later rounds. The Round 1 SC and ST rows and the National Spot Round OPEN rows are in the cut-off list on this page. Because NIT Calicut mapped these programmes only to the CS paper, every score here belongs to a GATE CS taker.
The institute spot round after CCMT
Seats still vacant after CCMT and CCMN were offered in an institute spot round on 20 August 2026. The rules were short:
- A valid GATE score of 2024, 2025 or 2026 and the same 60% / 6.5 CGPA minimum (55% / 6.0 for SC, ST and PwD).
- Eligibility as per CCMT 2026 norms and NIT Calicut's own conditions, so the CS-paper mapping still applied.
- Online registration by 5 pm on 19 August, then in-person registration at Bhaskara Hall between 9:30 and 10:30 am on 20 August. Late arrivals were not considered.
- Allotment by GATE score only, fee payment the same day, and classes from 20 August.
Students already admitted to NIT Calicut through CCMT or CCMN could not take part. Tentative vacancies were published on the NIT Calicut website on 14 August 2026.
CS63, Artificial Intelligence & Data Analytics: the non-CCMT route
CS63 does not appear in the CCMT seat matrix or the CCMT score table for NIT Calicut. It is offered under the 2026-27 self-sponsored and sponsored bulletin, with 20 self-sponsored seats and 5 industry-sponsored seats.
Eligibility is broader than CS61: a four-year bachelor's degree in any branch of engineering, technology or science, or a two- or three-year master's in science, mathematics, statistics, computer science or computer applications, with 60% or 6.5 CGPA (55% or 6.0 for SC, ST and PwD). Selection is on a test and/or interview run by the department, reservation rules do not apply, and students in this category receive no stipend or scholarship. Sponsored applicants also need two years of relevant experience.
For 2026-27, applications went through the institute's PG admission portal, and the admissions page shows the deadline extended to 15 May 2026, 10:00 AM. For a GATE DA aspirant this is the one NIT Calicut M.Tech whose official eligibility does not hinge on the GATE paper, though it carries self-sponsored fees and no stipend.
PhD in CSE: Winter (December) 2026-27
The Winter 2026-27 PhD page and its information brochure set the CSE route. The CSE department asks for an M.E./M.Tech./M.S. with a UG or PG degree in CSE, IT, EEE, ECE or an equivalent discipline, or an M.Sc./M.S. in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Electronics, Physics or Bioinformatics, or an MCA.
For the full-time Institute Fellowship scheme and the self-sponsored scheme, candidates must qualify NIT Calicut's National level PhD entrance examination and an interview, held at NIT Calicut. A B.Tech holder can apply with a valid NET or GATE score and 7.5 CGPA or 75% (7.0 or 70% for SC, ST and PwD). The deadline was extended to 30 October 2026; the shortlist is due around 10 November and the selection process is planned for 23 to 27 November 2026, with reporting on 17 December 2026 (all tentative).
Contacts and preparation
The Winter 2026-27 PhD brochure gives pgadmissions@nitc.ac.in for PG admissions and dao@nitc.ac.in, telephone 0495 2286119, for the Dean (Academic). NIT Calicut's CCMT admissions page carries the year's notices, including the spot round and reporting schedule.
If NIT Calicut's CSE seats are your target, the 2026-27 mapping means you need GATE CS: start with the GATE CSE syllabus and the GATE CSE 2027 guide. If you are a GATE DA aspirant, the GATE DA 2027 guide still applies for other institutes, and CS63 is the NIT Calicut option to watch. Practise with previous year questions and timed practice.
