Madurai is an IIT Madras zone GATE 2027 exam city. Which south Tamil Nadu and Kerala cities you can pair it with, plus dates and nearby institutes.

What the form calls Madurai
Open the official exam-city list and look under Tamilnadu. You will find one entry, "Madurai". The city is not split the way Chennai has Chennai North and Chennai South, and you cannot ask for a particular college or locality. GATE allots the centre, and you learn it from the admit card.
Madurai sits in the IIT Madras zone. IIT Madras is also the institute organising GATE 2027, so for us the zone office and the organiser are the same place.
Two rules from the same page decide everything else. You choose six cities, and all six must be from one zone. The list is also tentative: GATE can drop or add a city, and it can allot you a city outside your six if it has to. The exam is held only in India.
The south Tamil Nadu cities around us
For a Madurai student the zone rule is easy inside the state. All 24 Tamil Nadu exam cities on the list are IIT Madras zone, so no Tamil Nadu city is ruled out.
The southern half of the Tamil Nadu list is where most of us will look for back-ups: Virudhunagar, Theni, Dindigul, Karaikudi, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari - Nagercoil. All of them are on the same form as Madurai without any question.
Puducherry is IIT Madras zone too, under its own heading, and so are Chennai North, Chennai South, Coimbatore and the other western cities.
A list I would suggest for someone who will be in Madurai in February is Madurai, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Theni, Karaikudi and Tiruchirappalli. If your home is near Tirunelveli or Nagercoil, swap two of those for Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari - Nagercoil. Order them by where you could sleep the night before, because a centre in a town you have no way of reaching by morning is no use to you.
Across the Western Ghats, the zone changes
The trouble starts only if you want to mix in Kerala or Karnataka. Kerala is split between two zones.
- Idukki, Kottayam, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, Aluva - Ernakulam and the other southern and central Kerala cities on the list are IIT Madras zone. They can share a form with Madurai.
- Palakkad, Thrissur, Angamaly, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod and Pathanamthitta are IISc zone. They cannot.
Pathanamthitta catches people out. Kollam, Kottayam and Chengannur are IIT Madras zone, yet the list puts Pathanamthitta in the IISc zone.
All of Karnataka is IISc zone as well, so a Madurai student studying in Bengaluru or Mysuru has to choose. Either the whole form is IIT Madras zone with Madurai on it, or the whole form is IISc zone with Bengaluru North, Bengaluru South or Mysuru on it. The Bengaluru and Mysuru pages cover the IISc side, and Thiruvananthapuram covers south Kerala.
Who to write to
Questions about your exam city go to the IIT Madras zone office, as listed on the official page:
- IIT Madras, Chennai – 600 036: helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in, 044-22578200
Write from the email address you registered with and put your enrolment ID in the subject. If you are asking whether your city choices can still be changed, check the important-dates page first. Registration closed with the special window on 16 October 2026, and the data correction window on request is still marked TBA.
From the January notice to the exam morning
The city allotment notification is due on 4 January 2027. The admit card date is TBA, and the admit card is what gives you the exact centre address and reporting time. All dates on the official page are liable to change, so check it rather than relying on a forwarded message.
When the admit card arrives, find the centre on a map that day. Centres in and around a city can be some distance from the parts you know. If you were allotted a back-up such as Karaikudi or Tirunelveli, plan to reach the town the evening before. On the day, carry the printed admit card and the original photo ID you gave in the form, along with anything else the admit card asks for, and follow its rules on what you may take into the hall.
Results are due on 19 March 2027.
Institutes a Madurai aspirant looks at
The closest institutes with a GATEiit page are in Tiruchirappalli: NIT Trichy and IIIT Tiruchirappalli. Further north are IIT Madras, IIITDM Kancheepuram and Anna University in and around Chennai, and NIT Puducherry and Pondicherry University. IIT Palakkad, across the border in Kerala, also has a page. Each page sets out the GATE routes for DA and CSE candidates. The full list is on /institutes.
Your exam zone has nothing to do with where you can apply. Writing GATE in Madurai does not help you at IIT Madras, and it does not count against you at IIT Palakkad because Palakkad happens to be in another zone.
Preparing for the paper from Madurai
GATEiit has no centre, office or classroom in Madurai or anywhere else. It is a free website, so it works the same from a hostel room in the city or from home in a nearby district.
Start by fixing the paper: GATE DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) or GATE CSE (Computer Science and Information Technology). DA and CS are an allowed two-paper combination for 2027, in either order. Past papers are on /pyq and topic-wise questions on /practice. For a week-by-week plan, use the GATE DA 2027 guide or the GATE CSE 2027 guide, with more on /guides. Each paper page links a WhatsApp group for doubts.
All six exam days are Saturdays and Sundays. Take your full-length mocks on weekend mornings from December onwards so the timing feels normal by February. The GATE 2027 page and the exam-city overview carry the national details.
