GATE admission routes at NIT Puducherry

Where NIT Puducherry is and what its CSE department runs

NIT Puducherry's campus is not in Puducherry town. Every 2026 admission circular carries the address Thiruvettakudy, Karaikal 609 609, and the CCMT 2026 reporting circular adds "Puducherry UT". In 2026 both the CCMT reporting and the self-support written test were held on this campus.

For a GATE DA or CS taker, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering is the one to watch. In CCMT 2026 it offered a single M.Tech, listed by CCMT as Computer Science & Engineering (programme code XG). NIT Puducherry's other CCMT M.Tech programmes that year were VLSI Design, Power Electronics, Structural Engineering - Resilience and Sustainability, and Thermal Engineering. None of those is a computing programme.

The same department also takes PhD scholars. Its research areas in the July 2026 PhD brochure are artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, bioinformatics, information security, IoT security, geospatial intelligence, quantum computing and post-quantum cryptography.

Which GATE papers CCMT 2026 accepted for the CSE M.Tech

NIT Puducherry does not run its own M.Tech application for regular seats. You register on CCMT, and CCMT's 2026 seat mapping ("View Mapping of [Institute, Department, PG Program] VS [GATE Paper & Qualifying Degree]") decides who is eligible. For NIT Puducherry's Computer Science & Engineering M.Tech it printed four rows, all in Group 1:

Qualifying degree GATE paper
B.E./B.Tech. in any discipline Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA)
B.E./B.Tech. in any discipline Computer Science and Information Technology (CS)
B.E./B.Tech. in any discipline Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC)
B.E./B.Tech. in any discipline Electrical Engineering (EE)

Two things follow. First, a GATE DA score was enough to choose this programme in 2026, and the degree could be in any engineering branch. Second, DA, CS, EC and EE takers all sat in the same group, so the CCMT score table cannot tell you which paper the allotted candidates wrote.

The other NIT Puducherry M.Tech programmes did not list DA or CS at all in the 2026 mapping. VLSI Design took EC, EE and IN, and Power Electronics took EE only. Mappings are revised every year, so check the CCMT 2027 mapping before you fill choices.

CCMT 2026 GATE scores for Computer Science & Engineering

CCMT's Maximum and Minimum GATE Score table for 2026 gives the highest and lowest GATE score (out of 1000) among candidates allotted NIT Puducherry's Computer Science & Engineering seats. The Round 1 figures, copied as printed:

Category Max Min
OPEN 665 579
EWS 518 518
OBC-NCL 522 516
SC 427 427
ST 414 414

The OPEN figures fell as the rounds went on. The same table prints OPEN as 554 / 541 in Round 2, 536 / 536 in Round 3, 492 / 491 in Special Round 1 and 480 / 468 in the National Spot Round. Where Max and Min are the same, the table printed one score for that row.

Read these as a record of who was allotted in 2026, not a promise for 2027. They mix DA, CS, EC and EE scores, and seat matrices and applicant numbers change each year.

Reporting at Karaikal and the 2026-27 fee

The reporting circular dated 29 July 2026 asked CCMT and CCMN 2026 candidates to pay the Partial Admission Fee on CCMT first, then report in person on 11 August 2026 from 9:30 AM at the Academic Office, First Floor, V O Chidambaram Pillai Block. Classes for first-year M.Tech began on 12 August 2026.

The document list is long. Items that catch people out:

  1. The CCMT provisional allotment letter and the letter from the last round, including NSR, even if you were not upgraded.
  2. Your GATE scorecard, and OBC-NCL or EWS certificates issued on or after 1 April 2026 (or valid up to 31 August 2026).
  3. An SBI savings bank passbook (M.Tech only), a medical fitness certificate and the institute's affidavit.

The 2026-27 fee structure for M.Tech admitted through CCMT lists ₹57,810 for the first semester for GEN/OBC/EWS (₹35,000 tuition plus ₹22,810 institute fee, which includes one-time payments) and ₹22,810 for SC/ST/PwD, who pay no tuition. From the second semester it is ₹45,360 and ₹10,360. Hostel fees are not part of this table.

The self-support M.Tech round after CCMT

Seats that stayed vacant after CCMT 2026 were offered under a self-support notice dated 12 August 2026. This is a separate route with its own rules:

  • Eligibility for CSE was a B.E./B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering or a relevant discipline, with 6.5 CGPA or 60% (6.0 or 55% for SC/ST/PwD).
  • Selection was by the institute's written test and interview. GATE candidates uploaded their scorecard; non-GATE candidates uploaded their consolidated mark sheet.
  • Self-support students are not eligible for the institute's HTTRA scholarship.
  • The CSE vacancy shown was 2 seats, both OPEN, with a note that vacancies may vary.

Applications went through the Samarth portal (nitpyadm.samarth.edu.in) with a fee of ₹1,000 (₹500 for SC/ST/PwD). An addendum extended the deadline to 23 August 2026, 5 PM. The CSE department's shortlist of 24 August 2026 set the written test for 31 August 2026 in CSE208, APJ Abdul Kalam Block: 30 multiple-choice questions for 30 marks on the GATE CSE syllabus, with the interview the same day.

If your GATE score falls short in CCMT, this round is worth watching, but note the degree condition is CSE or a relevant discipline, and the notice does not define "relevant".

PhD in Computer Science and Engineering (July 2026 session)

The PhD brochure for July 2026, dated 4 May 2026, invited full-time Institute Fellowship applications in the CSE research areas listed above, plus part-time applications in CSE.

For a PhD in engineering, a master's in engineering or technology (or an M.S. by Research) with 60% or 6.5 CGPA (55% or 6.0 for SC/ST/PwD) is the standard entry. The Direct Ph.D. category is the one that involves GATE: a bachelor's in engineering or technology from a CFTI, or with a valid GATE score, and 80% or 8.5 CGPA (75% or 8.0 for SC/ST/PwD).

Selection is a written test and interview by the Departmental Selection Committee, common to full-time and part-time candidates. In 2026 the application ran on nitpyadm.samarth.edu.in until 25 May 2026 (fee ₹1,000, ₹500 for SC/ST/PwD), with the test and interview tentatively on 15 and 16 June and reporting on 8 July 2026. A separate application and fee is needed for each category you apply under.

Contacts and how to prepare

For PG academic queries, the reporting circular gives ad-pgacad@nitpy.ac.in and 04368-265235, extension 308 (9 AM to 5:30 PM). The PhD brochure lists academicoffice@nitpy.ac.in and dean-acad@nitpy.ac.in. Notices appear on NIT Puducherry's M.Tech admission page.

Because the 2026 mapping accepted both papers, choose the one you can score higher in. If that is DA, the GATE DA 2027 guide and the GATE DA syllabus page are the place to start; for CS, see GATE CSE and the GATE CSE 2027 guide. The self-support written test also follows the GATE CSE syllabus. Work through previous year questions and timed practice, and check the GATE 2027 dates. Other South Indian options are on the institutes list, including NIT Trichy and IIITDM Kancheepuram.
