GATE 2027 in Hyderabad: Exam City, IISc Zone Rules and Institutes
Hyderabad is in the IISc zone for GATE 2027, unlike Warangal or Karimnagar. Plan six same-zone exam cities, exam day and nearby institutes.

Hyderabad on the GATE 2027 exam-city list
The official exam-city page lists Hyderabad as a single exam city. Unlike Bengaluru, which is split into Bengaluru North and Bengaluru South, or Chennai, split into Chennai North and Chennai South, the form offers no separate east or west Hyderabad option. You choose "Hyderabad" and GATE decides which centre inside the city you get.
Telangana is split across two zones on the list:
| Zone (coordinating institute) | Telangana exam cities |
|---|---|
| IISc, Bengaluru | Hyderabad, Nalgonda |
| IIT Madras, Chennai | Adilabad, Karimnagar, Khammam, Kodad, Kothagudem, Nizamabad, Warangal |
That split is easy to miss, because a student from Hanamkonda who studies in Hyderabad naturally wants Hyderabad and Warangal together. The form does not allow it. All six choices must come from one zone.
The list is tentative. GATE says it may add or remove a city, and may allot a city outside your choices if it has to. GATE 2027 is held only in India.
Filling six choices when you live in Hyderabad
If Hyderabad is your first choice, every other choice has to be an IISc-zone city. Within Telangana that leaves only Nalgonda. The rest of the zone is spread over Karnataka, Kerala, western Andhra Pradesh and Port Blair.
A sensible order for a Hyderabad student:
- Hyderabad
- Nalgonda, the only other Telangana city in the IISc zone
- Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh, IISc zone)
- Bidar (Karnataka, IISc zone)
- Kalaburagi (Karnataka, IISc zone)
- Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh) or Bengaluru North / Bengaluru South, depending on where you could stay with family
Ballari is another IISc-zone option in the same belt. Reorder by where you can actually reach and spend a night, since a back-up choice only helps if you can get there.
Cities that look close but cannot be combined
- IIT Madras zone: Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Kodad and Kothagudem in Telangana; Guntur, Amaravati, Nellore, Tirupati and Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh.
- IIT Kharagpur zone: Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Rajamahendravaram and Kakinada-Surampalem.
- IIT Bombay zone: Nanded, Latur and Chandrapur in Maharashtra.
If your home is in Warangal or Karimnagar
Then the real decision is which zone to pick. If you will be at home in February, an all-IIT Madras zone list (Warangal, Karimnagar, Khammam, Nizamabad, Kothagudem, Kodad) keeps you in Telangana. If you will be in a Hyderabad hostel or job, the IISc-zone list above makes more sense. Decide where you will physically be in February, then pick the zone.
Who to ask about your exam city
Hyderabad's exam-city questions go to the IISc zone office, not to IIT Madras, even though IIT Madras organises GATE 2027. The contact on the official page:
- IISc, Bengaluru-560 012: helpdesk.gate@iisc.ac.in, 080-22932644, 080-22932392, 080-22933333
Write from the email ID you registered with and quote your enrolment ID. For questions about the paper itself or the application portal, the organising institute's helpdesk is helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in (044-22578200).
Registration for GATE 2027 closed with the special window on 16 October 2026. The official dates page has extended the scrutiny-defect rectification window, most recently to 3 November 2026, so check it for the current date. The official dates page shows the data correction window as TBA, so check it when it opens before assuming your city order can still change.
Getting to your centre on exam day
GATE 2027 runs over three weekends: 6 and 7 February, 13 and 14 February, and 20 and 21 February 2027. The city allotment notification is due on 4 January 2027. The admit card date is still TBA; the admit card will name your exact centre and the reporting time.
Hyderabad is large and centres can be on the city's edges, so do not assume your allotted centre is near your hostel or home. Once the admit card is out:
- Find the centre on a map that evening and work out the route from where you will sleep the night before.
- If you are going to use the metro, check timings against your reporting time. According to Hyderabad Metro Rail's train-timings page, the metro runs seven days a week with the first service at 06:00 hrs. Its three lines are the Red Line (Miyapur to L B Nagar), the Green Line (JBS Parade Ground to MG Bus Station) and the Blue Line (Nagole to Raidurg), with interchanges at Ameerpet, MG Bus Station and JBS Parade Ground. A morning session can start early, and the last stretch from a station to a centre outside the city may need other transport.
- If your allotted city is Nalgonda or another back-up, plan to reach the day before.
Carry the printed admit card and the original photo ID you entered in the form, plus whatever else the admit card lists. Follow the admit card's instructions on what is and is not allowed inside; they are the final word.
Institutes around Hyderabad that admit through GATE
Three institutes with GATEiit pages are in Telangana, and each page explains its GATE routes for DA and CSE candidates:
- IIT Hyderabad, at Kandi in Sangareddy district
- IIIT Hyderabad, at Gachibowli
- NIT Warangal, in Warangal
If you are also looking further south, IISc Bengaluru (also your zone office), IIT Madras, IIT Tirupati and IIT Dharwad all have pages. The full list is on /institutes.
Your exam city has no bearing on admission. Writing GATE in Hyderabad does not help with IIT Hyderabad, and writing it in Bengaluru does not help with IISc. Choose the city for convenience on the day and choose institutes separately.
Preparing from Hyderabad with GATEiit
GATEiit is online only. It has no centre or office in Hyderabad or anywhere else, and everything on the site is free to use from a hostel room or a flat in any part of the city.
Start with the paper you are writing. GATE DA is the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence paper; GATE CSE is the Computer Science and Information Technology paper. Each page sets out the syllabus. GATE 2027 allows DA and CS as a two-paper combination, so some students write both.
From there:
- Work through past papers year by year on /pyq, then use /practice for topic-wise questions.
- Read the GATE DA 2027 preparation guide or the GATE CSE 2027 preparation guide and the other guides.
- Join the WhatsApp group linked on the DA or CSE paper page if you want to discuss questions with other aspirants.
If you have a job in Hyderabad, plan your mock tests for weekends, since that is when the real exam happens. For the national picture, see GATE 2027 and the exam-city overview. Students in the same zone may find the Bengaluru page useful; the Chennai page covers the IIT Madras zone.

Frequently asked questions
Is Hyderabad in the IIT Madras zone for GATE 2027?
No. The official list puts Hyderabad in the IISc (Bengaluru) zone, along with Nalgonda. IIT Madras organises GATE 2027 as a whole, but Hyderabad's exam-city zone is IISc.
Can I choose Hyderabad and Warangal together?
No. Warangal is in the IIT Madras zone and Hyderabad is in the IISc zone, and all six choices must come from the same zone. The same applies to Karimnagar, Khammam, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Kodad and Kothagudem.
Which cities can I add after Hyderabad and Nalgonda?
Any IISc-zone city. Kurnool, Anantapur, Bidar, Kalaburagi and Ballari are the IISc-zone cities nearest Telangana, and Bengaluru North or Bengaluru South work if you can stay there.
Can I pick a particular area of Hyderabad, like Gachibowli or Secunderabad?
No. Hyderabad is one exam city on the list. GATE allots the centre within the city, and your admit card will show it.
Is Vijayawada an option with Hyderabad?
No. Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam are in the IIT Kharagpur zone, so they cannot be combined with Hyderabad.
When will I know my exam city?
The city allotment notification is scheduled for 4 January 2027. Your exact centre comes on the admit card, whose date is still TBA.
Whom do I contact about my Hyderabad exam city?
The IISc zone office: helpdesk.gate@iisc.ac.in or 080-22932644, 080-22932392, 080-22933333.
Does writing GATE in Hyderabad help for IIT Hyderabad admission?
No. Admission depends on your GATE score and the institute's own process, not on the city where you took the exam.
