The Warangal campus and its CSE M.Tech programmes
NIT Warangal's address on its admission documents is Warangal 506 004, Telangana. It is a separate city from Hyderabad, so plan travel for reporting days accordingly.
All three M.Tech programmes that matter for a GATE DA or CSE aspirant sit in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering:
- Artificial Intelligence, the closest fit for someone preparing for GATE DA.
- Computer Science & Engineering.
- Computer Science & Information Security.
The department-specific qualification table in NIT Warangal's 2026 Institute Spot Round brochure shows how they differ. For CSE and Information Security, it lists a long set of computing B.Tech/B.E. degrees, including Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, CSE (Data Science) and CSE (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning). For Artificial Intelligence, the same list applies, and it also admits a B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering or in Electrical / Electrical and Electronics / Electrical Power Engineering. That table is printed for the self-finance stream, but it explains why the AI programme has more than one seat group on CCMT.
M.Tech through CCMT: the 2026 cycle at NIT Warangal
Regular, stipend-carrying M.Tech seats at NIT Warangal are filled through CCMT. The CCMT 2026 brochure required a valid GATE score of 2024, 2025 or 2026 and a qualifying-degree minimum of 60% or 6.5 CGPA (55% or 6.0 CGPA for SC, ST and PwD). It ran three regular rounds, two Special Rounds and a National Spot Round.
NIT Warangal's brochure is blunt about eligibility: if your qualifying degree is not mapped to a specialisation in CCMT's seat mapping of programme against GATE paper and qualifying degree, you are not eligible for that specialisation even with a valid GATE score. The institute tells candidates to open that page, choose "National Institute of Technology, Warangal", the department, the programme and Group "ALL".
After allotment, the 2026 reporting instructions had candidates complete registration and fee payment on the NITWAS ERP portal on 10 and 11 August 2026, then report in person at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Learning Centre. Computer Science and Engineering candidates reported on 13 August 2026.
Artificial Intelligence: four seat groups, one programme
CCMT lets an institute split one programme's seats into groups by degree discipline. NIT Warangal did this for Artificial Intelligence in 2026: CCMT's score table lists it under G1, G2, G3 and G4 in Round 1, while CSE and Information Security each appear under a single group, G1.
The score table does not say which degrees or GATE papers each AI group covers. That mapping lives only in the CCMT seat mapping page linked above, and no NIT Warangal page I could find names the GATE DA paper for any of these programmes. So if you hold a GATE DA score, check the mapping for Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science & Engineering and Computer Science & Information Security one by one before you lock choices. If you hold a GATE CS score with a CSE or IT degree, your degree is on the list NIT Warangal printed for all three in its 2026 self-finance table, though the CCMT mapping still decides regular seats.
Groups also matter late in counselling. The CCMT 2026 brochure says unfilled seats in G2, G3 and higher groups convert to the next lower group in the same category after the regular rounds, ending in G1.

After CCMT: institute spot round and M.Tech (Self Finance)
NIT Warangal runs its own round in August for seats still vacant after CCMT reporting. The 2026 Institute Spot Round brochure set out two streams.
M.Tech with institute stipend
Vacant regular seats go first to candidates with a valid GATE score, allotted by GATE score with reservation rules applied and no written test. Seats still left can go to candidates without a valid GATE score, who do not receive a stipend. In 2026 the vacancy list went up on 15 August, applications closed on 17 August, and selected candidates reported on 21 August, with classwork from 24 August.
M.Tech (Self Finance)
Admission is by a written test based on the GATE syllabus, compulsory for every applicant with or without a GATE score, and reservation rules do not apply. In 2026 the brochure also said hostel accommodation on campus would not be given to self-finance students because of hostel renovation work. A GATE candidate may apply to both streams, with separate registration forms and fees.
PhD in CSE: the December 2026 session
The December 2026 PhD brochure applies to every engineering department, CSE included.
- GATE is not mandatory for full-time or part-time applicants in engineering departments.
- A full-time Institute Fellowship applicant with GATE qualification skips the written test and goes to interview. Without GATE, you sit a written test whose Part A follows the department-specific GATE syllabus.
- Everyone faces an interview.
- A B.Tech-only applicant needs at least 7.5 CGPA or 70% (7.0 or 65% for SC, ST and PwD).
For CSE, the qualification is a B.Tech/B.E. in CSE with an M.Tech/M.E. in CSE or equivalent, or a B.Tech/B.E. in CSE alone. The department's listed research areas include artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining, deep learning, big data analytics and natural language processing. The December 2026 call closed on 14 October 2026, with written tests and interviews from 4 to 10 November 2026.
Where to apply and how to prepare
Everything run by the institute itself, from the spot round to PhD, goes through the NIT Warangal admissions portal. When checked in November 2026, it listed PhD and M.Tech notices but no MS (by Research) notice. CCMT matters are handled on ccmt.admissions.nic.in.
The 2026 Round 1 OPEN minimums of 766 for CSE and 750 for Information Security show how much rests on the GATE score itself. Use the GATE DA page with the GATE DA 2027 preparation guide, or the GATE CSE page with the GATE CSE 2027 guide, then previous year questions and timed practice. If you will write GATE 2027 from Telangana, the Hyderabad exam city page covers that centre. Other institutes are listed under institutes, including NIT Trichy and NIT Calicut.

Frequently asked questions
Which NIT Warangal M.Tech should a GATE DA candidate look at?
Artificial Intelligence, offered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, is the closest in subject. Whether your DA score is accepted depends on CCMT's seat mapping of degree and GATE paper for that programme and group, which NIT Warangal asks candidates to check.
Why does Artificial Intelligence appear four times on CCMT?
Its seats were split into groups G1 to G4 in 2026. CCMT allows institutes to divide seats by degree discipline, and NIT Warangal's AI qualification list includes computing degrees as well as ECE and electrical degrees.
What was the CCMT 2026 Round 1 OPEN score for M.Tech CSE at NIT Warangal?
CCMT printed a maximum of 811 and a minimum of 766 for Computer Science & Engineering, group G1, OPEN category, in Round 1. By Round 3 the OPEN row read 743.
Can I get an NIT Warangal M.Tech without a GATE score?
Only through the M.Tech (Self Finance) stream, admitted by a written test based on the GATE syllabus, or through leftover regular seats in the institute spot round without stipend. Regular seats with stipend need a valid GATE score.
Is there a written test for GATE candidates in the institute spot round?
No. In 2026, candidates applying for the stipend-carrying M.Tech with a valid GATE score were exempt from the written test and allotted by GATE score.
Do I need GATE for a PhD in CSE at NIT Warangal?
Not for the December 2026 session. GATE helps, though: an Institute Fellowship applicant with GATE qualification skips the written test and goes straight to interview.
Where did CCMT candidates report at NIT Warangal in 2026?
At Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Learning Centre on campus. CSE candidates were scheduled for 13 August 2026, after registering and paying on the NITWAS ERP portal on 10 and 11 August.
Is NIT Warangal near Hyderabad?
It is in Warangal, Telangana (PIN 506 004), a separate city from Hyderabad. The admission documents give the Warangal address only.
