GATE admission routes at University of Hyderabad

The School of Computer and Information Sciences at Gachibowli

The University of Hyderabad is a central university established by an Act of Parliament in 1974. Its address is Prof. C.R. Rao Road, P.O. Central University, Gachibowli, Hyderabad 500046, and its admission-procedure note says it is a unitary university with no study centres, branches or affiliated colleges elsewhere. For exam-centre and travel planning, see the Hyderabad city page.

Computing sits in the School of Computer and Information Sciences (SCIS). The 2026-27 prospectus traces it to MCA, M.Tech and PhD teaching from 1983, a department from 1993 and a school from 2012. It says SCIS started its M.Tech in AI in 1987 and calls it "the first and the oldest running AI programme in the country", with more than 800 graduates. It lists 27 faculty and research in deep learning, NLP, computer vision, cryptography, IoT, cloud computing and theoretical computer science.

SCIS runs a 5-year Integrated M.Tech (CSE) through JEE Main and JoSAA, an MCA through NIMCET, the two GATE M.Tech programmes and a PhD in Computer Science. Only the last three concern a GATE DA or CS taker.

GATE and CCMT, not CUET-PG or a university test

Most postgraduate programmes at the university admit through CUET-PG, and a few PhD programmes use the university's own entrance examination. The M.Tech programmes in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence use neither. The university's admission-procedure note puts it in one line: "M.Tech. Programmes: GATE score + CCMT counselling". The prospectus adds that the application is made through CCMT.

In practice that means:

  1. Register on the CCMT portal and add the UoH programmes to your choices. University of Hyderabad appears there as its own institute.
  2. If you are allotted a seat, submit the university's own application on its Samarth portal (uohydadm.samarth.edu.in) before reporting. The university's notice of 23 July 2026 makes this a condition.
  3. Report in person. In 2026, CCMT entrants to M.Tech (Computer Science), M.Tech (Artificial Intelligence) and M.Tech (Bioinformatics) reported at 10 am on 12 August 2026 at the CIS Building, South Campus.

One M.Tech works differently. M.Tech in Microelectronics & VLSI Design (36 seats) takes GATE EC, IN or PH and is applied for directly on the university's portal; in 2026 the window ran from 25 May to 30 June. It does not accept DA or CS.

Eligibility for M.Tech CS and M.Tech AI

The 2026-27 prospectus gives one rule for both programmes:

Requirement What the prospectus says
GATE paper Computer Science and Information Technology OR Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (codes CS, DA)
Degree At least 60% or equivalent grade in Computer Science & Engineering or equivalent (as determined by AICTE), OR 60% in MCA/M.Sc. Computer Science or equivalent
Relaxation 5% lower marks for SC and ST candidates in M.Tech courses
Application Through CCMT

This is where a GATE DA taker needs care. The paper is accepted, but the prospectus wording ties the degree to CSE or an equivalent. The CCMT 2026 seat-mapping table for SCIS is wider: for both programmes it lists B.E./B.Tech. in any discipline and a 4-year B.S. in Data Science and Applications against DA and CS, and adds an M.Sc. in Data Science against DA for Computer Science. Since the university verifies documents at reporting, a non-CSE graduate should confirm with the academic section before locking these choices.

Seat break-up for 2026-27 (Table II of the admission announcement):

Programme UR SC ST OBC EWS PwD Total
M.Tech Artificial Intelligence 10 5 2 8 3 2 30
M.Tech Computer Science 16 7 3 13 4 2 45

The prospectus notes that PwD seats in M.Tech courses are within the notified intake, not supernumerary.

CCMT 2026 GATE scores at the University of Hyderabad

The university does not publish its own cut-off list for these programmes. CCMT does publish the highest and lowest GATE score (out of 1000) among candidates allotted each programme in each round. The figures below are as printed. CCMT reports one figure per group, so DA and CS scores are combined.

Round Category AI max AI min CS max CS min
Round 1 OPEN 629 545 606 534
Round 1 EWS 514 491 503 495
Round 1 OBC-NCL 538 476 533 484
Round 1 SC 393 383 438 400
Round 1 ST 343 324 411 337
National Spot Round OPEN 503 496 503 484

In Round 1 the AI programme's OPEN figures were higher than Computer Science's, while for SC and ST the Computer Science figures were higher. These are single-year numbers that depend on who applied and what they locked, so read them as a rough marker for 2027.

PhD in Computer Science with GATE DA or CS

The 2026-27 prospectus lists 15 seats for the PhD in Computer Science, in the group of PhD programmes that admit through UGC-NET rather than the university's entrance examination. Its eligibility text asks for a degree at NCRF level 6.5 or higher with 60% in CSE (or equivalent), computer applications or computer science, and a UGC-NET score in Computer Science and Applications. The mode-of-admission column and the SCIS admission section also accept a valid GATE score in CS or DA.

Selection combines the normalised NET or GATE score (70%) with an interview (30 marks). The interview break-up is 15 marks for the interview itself, which runs "from basic concepts and general awareness in Computer Science" to PhD-level core CS and AI, and 15 for a research proposal: 9 for presenting and defending it, 3 for its fit with faculty research and 3 for documentation and bibliography. Bring a 4 to 6 page research plan.

For the September 2026 session the 15 seats split as GE 6, SC 2, ST 1, OBC 4, EWS 1, PwD 1. Applications ran from 1 September to 10 October 2026, interviews are scheduled for 12 to 14 November 2026 and admission counselling for 2 December 2026.

Timeline, contacts and preparation

The 2026 M.Tech cycle at the university followed CCMT's calendar rather than the university's PG schedule. Seats were allotted over CCMT's regular rounds, two special rounds and the National Spot Round, and CCMT entrants reported on 12 August 2026. Watch the notifications page and the SCIS website for the 2027 equivalents.

For admission queries the university gives 040-2313 2444 and 040-2313 2102, and aao@uohyd.ac.in. The full rules are in the Prospectus 2026-27.

Because the CCMT figures above combine both papers, take whichever of DA or CS you are stronger in. The GATE DA guide and GATE CSE guide set out study plans, and practice questions help you check progress. Other Hyderabad institutes with GATE pages: IIT Hyderabad and IIIT Hyderabad.
