GATE 2027 in Guntur: Exam City, the Vijayawada Split and Institutes

On the official exam-city page, Andhra Pradesh has nine cities under IIT Madras. Three of them are close to home for us, and the form treats each as its own city:

• Guntur
• Amaravati
• Chirala-Bapatla

So "Guntur" on your form means a centre that GATE places under Guntur, and Amaravati is a different line. If you are fine with either, list both. You cannot pick a locality within Guntur; the admit card tells you the centre.

IIT Madras coordinates the zone and also organises GATE 2027. The list is tentative: GATE may add or remove a city and may allot one outside your choices. The exam is held only in India.

If you live in Guntur but study, work or take classes in Vijayawada, the natural instinct is to write Guntur first and Vijayawada second. The form will not take that. Vijayawada is listed under IIT Kharagpur, and all six choices must come from one zone.

The same goes for Eluru, Tadepalligudem, Bhimavaram, Rajamahendravaram, Visakhapatnam and Kakinada-Surampalem. Every one of them is IIT Kharagpur zone.

So decide where you will be on the exam weekends:

• At home in Guntur: stay in the IIT Madras zone and leave Vijayawada off.
• In a Vijayawada hostel or flat: you may be better off with an all-IIT Kharagpur list starting with Vijayawada. Our Vijayawada page covers that list.

Pick one. A list with Guntur and Vijayawada mixed is not something the zone rule allows.

With Guntur first, all five back-ups come from the IIT Madras zone. One workable order:

1. Guntur
2. Amaravati
3. Chirala-Bapatla
4. Ongole
5. Nellore
6. Kodad or Khammam

Kodad, Khammam and Kothagudem may surprise you. They are in Telangana, but they are IIT Madras zone, so they can sit on the same form as Guntur even though Vijayawada cannot. Tirupati, Kadapa, Nandyala and Chittoor are further same-zone options in Andhra Pradesh.

Reorder by where you have family or a friend's room. A back-up you cannot reach the evening before is not much of a back-up.

Two zones are closed to you with Guntur on the form:

Because Guntur is IIT Madras zone, one office handles both the zone and the exam as a whole. The official page lists:

Write from your registered email and include your enrolment ID. The official dates page shows the data correction window as TBA; that is when changes to your application, such as your city order, would be possible. Check it when it opens rather than assuming.

All dates below are from the official dates page, which says they may change:

The allotment tells you the city. The admit card tells you the centre and reporting time, and that is the moment to look it up properly. If you got Ongole, Nellore or Kodad rather than Guntur, go the day before a forenoon session.

Take the printed admit card, the original photo ID you entered in the application, and anything else the admit card lists. Follow its rules on what you can carry into the hall.

No institute with a GATEiit page is in Guntur itself. The ones within Andhra Pradesh:

• IIT Tirupati, in Tirupati
• IIIT Sri City, at Sri City, Chittoor

In Telangana, look at IIT Hyderabad, IIIT Hyderabad, University of Hyderabad and NIT Warangal, and in Chennai, IIT Madras. Each page explains that institute's GATE routes for DA and CSE candidates. The rest are on /institutes.

Do not choose your exam city with admission in mind. NIT Andhra Pradesh sits at Tadepalligudem, an IIT Kharagpur-zone exam city, and writing GATE in Guntur makes no difference to your chances there or anywhere else.

GATEiit is online only, with no centre in Guntur or any other city, and the resources are free.

1. Choose the paper. GATE DA is Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and GATE CSE is Computer Science and Information Technology. Each page has the syllabus and a WhatsApp group link. DA and CS can be written together as a two-paper combination in 2027.
2. Work past papers on /pyq, then topic-wise questions on /practice.
3. Follow the GATE DA 2027 guide or the GATE CSE 2027 guide, and dip into the other guides as needed.
