IIT Palakkad Admission Through GATE: M.Tech in Data Science, MS and PhD

IIT Palakkad's address is Kanjikode West, Palakkad, Kerala 678 623. The 2026 PG brochure says the institute moved to full operations on its permanent Sahyadri campus (504 acres, at the foothills of the Sahyadri range) in 2023, with the Nila transit campus close by.

Two departments matter if you are writing GATE DA or GATE CS.

• The Department of Data Science, which hosts the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. It offers the M.Tech in Data Science, MS (by Research), PhD and a B.Tech in Data Science and Engineering.
• The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, which runs the M.Tech in Computing and Mathematics (jointly with Mathematics), the M.Tech in System-on-Chip Design (jointly with Electrical Engineering), and the MS and PhD in CSE.

Notice that IIT Palakkad has no M.Tech titled "Computer Science and Engineering" here. A GATE CS taker who wants an M.Tech at IIT Palakkad chooses between Data Science, Computing and Mathematics, and System-on-Chip Design.

The PG Information Brochure 2026 sets out the process for 2026-27.

The brochure is strict on two points. Applications without a valid COAP registration number are "rejected outright", and you must submit a separate application with a separate fee for each programme. If you want both Data Science and Computing and Mathematics, that is two applications. The brochure also says dates will not be extended.

M.Tech students admitted as regular GATE candidates are eligible for a Half-Time Teaching Assistantship of ₹12,400 per month for up to 24 months, in return for at least eight hours a week of academic work.

Table 1 of the 2026 brochure gives the minimum qualifications.

The Data Science route is the most open of the three. Any 4-year engineering branch is accepted, so a mechanical or civil graduate who has prepared well for GATE DA qualifies on paper. The department's April 2026 notice said the programme considered GATE DA and CS for 2026 admissions. In 2025 the same department had listed DA, CS, EC and EE, so the accepted papers have narrowed. Check the list again in the 2027 brochure.

Computing and Mathematics is narrower on degree: CSE/IT graduates or mathematics graduates. The brochure describes a first semester of bridge courses, where CS students take core mathematics and mathematics students take core computer science.

IIT Palakkad published an M.Tech GATE cut-off PDF for AY 2026-27, titled "M. Tech. GATE Cut off Score (COAP Rounds)". The scores below are GATE scores out of 1000, as printed. Where a cell lists more than one paper, the PDF gives a separate figure for each.

A blank for a paper in a category means the PDF printed no figure for that paper there, not that the score was zero. These numbers record one year's COAP rounds. They are not a promise for 2027.

Research admissions run through resap.iitpkd.ac.in. The portal currently lists the January 2027 cycle, with MS in Computer Science and Engineering, MS in Data Science, PhD in Computer Science and Engineering and PhD in Data Science among the openings, and a last date of 1 November 2026.

The Department of Data Science says it admits twice a year: a May cycle (advertised in March, interviews in May, start in July) and a December cycle (advertised in September, interviews in December, start in January).

The portal's eligibility page states the requirements.

• MS (by Research): a valid GATE score with your degree certificate, or a CFTI degree with CGPA proof.
• Direct PhD: a four-year bachelor's degree with an exceptionally good record and a valid GATE score in an eligible discipline, or a CFTI degree with CGPA of at least 8 (7.5 for OBC-NCL, 7.0 for SC/ST/PwD).
• PhD in engineering: a master's in engineering or technology with a good record. Master's in science holders need GATE, CSIR-UGC NET, NBHM or equivalent.

The January 2025 research brochure (the latest full brochure on the portal's own domain) describes selection as an interview and/or test by a selection committee, with a statement of purpose of up to 500 words listing research areas in order of preference. Departments tell shortlisted candidates about the interview and any written test. Data Science research areas in that brochure included machine learning, NLP, information retrieval, computer vision, federated learning and multi-agent systems.

A few M.Tech routes in the 2026 brochure skip GATE.

• IIT B.Tech graduates with CGPA of 8 or above can apply as regular candidates without GATE.
• Sponsored candidates need two years of study leave and full financial support from their employer, and do not need GATE.
• Defence-sponsored candidates are selected through the Ministry of Defence's own procedure.

The institute keeps the right to hold a suitability test or interview for some of these categories. For a final-year student, GATE DA or CS remains the route that matters.

For the 2027 cycle:

1. Decide early whether you want the Data Science M.Tech (DA or CS) or Computing and Mathematics (CS or MA). It affects which paper you write.
2. Prepare with how to prepare for GATE DA 2027 or how to prepare for GATE CSE 2027, and practise with previous year questions.
3. Register on COAP as soon as it opens, then watch pgadmit.iitpkd.ac.in for the 2027 brochure, likely around March if the 2026 pattern repeats.
