GATE 2027 in Coimbatore: IIT Madras Zone, Kerala Border and Institutes
Coimbatore is in the IIT Madras zone for GATE 2027, but Palakkad and Thrissur are IISc zone. Plan six same-zone cities and nearby institutes.

The state border is also a zone line
Coimbatore itself is simple. The official exam-city list has one entry, "Coimbatore", under Tamil Nadu in the IIT Madras zone. You cannot ask for a particular area such as a college campus or a part of town; GATE assigns the centre.
The complication is to the west. Kerala is split between two zones, and the split does not follow what feels near to us:
| Zone | Kerala exam cities |
|---|---|
| IISc | Angamaly, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Wayanad |
| IIT Madras | Alappuzha, Aluva - Ernakulam, Attingal, Chengannur, Idukki, Kanjirapally, Kollam, Kothamangalam, Kottayam, Muvattupuzha, Thiruvananthapuram |
Palakkad, the Kerala name most of us think of first, is IISc. So are Thrissur and Kozhikode. Aluva - Ernakulam is IIT Madras, but Angamaly is IISc. Every Karnataka exam city, Mysuru and both Bengaluru options included, is IISc as well.
GATE calls the list tentative. It can add or remove cities, and it can allot a city outside your six if needed. The exam is held only in India.
Six choices without leaving the zone
With Coimbatore first, the western Tamil Nadu cities give you plenty of same-zone back-ups. A list for someone who will be in Coimbatore in February:
- Coimbatore
- Pollachi
- Erode
- Ooty
- Salem
- Namakkal or Dindigul
If your family is further south, Madurai, Theni or Tiruchirappalli fit in the same slots. If you have somewhere to stay in central Kerala, Aluva - Ernakulam, Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha and Kottayam are IIT Madras zone too, so they can sit on the same form as Coimbatore.
What you cannot add: Palakkad, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur or Angamaly in Kerala, and Mysuru, Mandya or Bengaluru North / Bengaluru South in Karnataka. They are all IISc zone.
Order your back-ups by where you could actually spend the night before the exam. A city on the list is no help if you have no way to get there for a morning session.
From Palakkad or Thrissur, studying in Coimbatore
If you study in Coimbatore but your home is in Kerala, decide where you will physically be on the exam weekends, then pick the zone that matches.
- Staying in your Coimbatore hostel or flat: the IIT Madras list above.
- Going home to Palakkad, Thrissur or Kozhikode: an all-IISc list, such as Palakkad, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Angamaly, Wayanad and Kannur.
You cannot hedge by mixing Coimbatore and Palakkad. The application will not accept two zones. The Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram pages cover the Kerala side in more detail, and the Bengaluru page covers the IISc zone.
Your zone office is also the organiser
For Coimbatore the zone office and the organising institute are the same: IIT Madras. The contact as listed on the official page:
- IIT Madras, Chennai – 600 036: helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in, 044-22578200
Write from your registered email address and include your enrolment ID. A Palakkad-side student who went with the IISc zone writes to helpdesk.gate@iisc.ac.in instead.
Registration closed with the special window on 16 October 2026. The data correction window is marked TBA on the dates page; check what it allows when it opens before you assume your cities can still be changed.
The three weekends and what comes before
Papers are on 6 and 7 February, 13 and 14 February, and 20 and 21 February 2027. The city allotment notification is scheduled for 4 January 2027. The admit card date is TBA; the admit card is what tells you the centre address and reporting time.
Once it is out, find the centre straight away. A Coimbatore centre may be well away from the part of the city you know, and if you were allotted Ooty or Salem, plan to arrive the day before. Carry the printed admit card and the original photo ID you entered in the form, plus anything else the admit card lists, and follow its rules on what can go into the hall. Results are due on 19 March 2027.
Institutes on both sides of the border
The nearest institute with a GATEiit page is IIT Palakkad, at Kanjikode in Palakkad, Kerala. Within Tamil Nadu, look at NIT Trichy in Tiruchirappalli and IIT Madras in Chennai. NIT Calicut in Kerala and IISc Bengaluru also have pages. Each page sets out the GATE routes for DA and CSE candidates, and the full list is on /institutes.
The zone you write in has no effect on admission. Taking the exam in Coimbatore does not favour you at IIT Madras, and it does not count against you at IIT Palakkad because Palakkad happens to be IISc zone. Exam city and institute choice are separate decisions.
Studying for the paper from here
GATEiit has no centre or office in Coimbatore or anywhere else. It is a free website, so you can use it from a hostel, a PG or home.
Decide on the paper first: GATE DA (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) or GATE CSE (Computer Science and Information Technology). DA and CS are an allowed two-paper combination for 2027 if you want to attempt both.
Past papers are on /pyq and topic-wise practice on /practice. For a study plan, use the GATE DA 2027 guide or the GATE CSE 2027 guide, with more on /guides. The WhatsApp group linked on each paper page is the place to talk through doubts.
Because every paper falls on a Saturday or Sunday, schedule full-length mocks on weekend mornings and get used to that rhythm. The GATE 2027 page and the exam-city overview have the national details, and the Chennai page covers the rest of the IIT Madras zone.
