NIT Trichy and its two computing departments
NIT Trichy sits in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu (PIN 620 015), on the central Tamil Nadu plains rather than near any of the large IT cities. For a GATE DA or CSE aspirant, two departments matter.
- The Department of Computer Science and Engineering runs the M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, described on its own page as "The M.Tech. Programme in Computer Science".
- The Department of Computer Applications runs the M.Tech in Data Analytics. Its current curriculum document is marked "with effect from 2024–2025 onwards".
That split is worth knowing early. The Data Analytics programme is not a CSE department specialisation, so when you fill choices on CCMT it appears as a separate programme line under the institute, and its seat count, groups and closing scores move independently of the CSE line.
Both departments also take research scholars. The January 2027 PhD call lists the CSE department and the Computer Applications department separately, each with its own seat matrix and qualifying-degree list.
M.Tech admission through CCMT: how the 2026 cycle worked
NIT Trichy does not run a separate M.Tech application for regular GATE candidates. Its M.Tech admissions page for 2026–27 points GATE takers to CCMT 2026 at ccmt.admissions.nic.in, and lists two other channels: a sponsored category with its own brochure (online application extended to 21 August 2026) and DASA 2026 for foreign nationals, PIOs, NRIs and OCIs.
The CCMT 2026 information brochure set these rules for the 2026 cycle:
- A valid GATE score of 2024, 2025 or 2026.
- In the qualifying degree, at least 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale or 60% for GEN, GEN-EWS and OBC candidates, and 6.0 CGPA or 55% for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
- Three regular rounds of seat allotment, then two Special Rounds and a National Spot Round for seats still vacant.
- Some institutes split a programme's seats into groups G1, G2, G3 by degree discipline, and the eligibility matrix that maps degree names to GATE papers is published on the CCMT website.
After allotment, you report to NIT Trichy for document verification and fee payment as per the institute's own reporting instructions, published on its M.Tech admissions page.
What a GATE DA or CSE taker can apply for
Start with the official eligibility wording, because the two programmes are worded differently on NIT Trichy's own documents.
M.Tech in Data Analytics
The Department of Computer Applications' Data Analytics curriculum, applicable from 2022–23, states the qualification for admission as a B.E./B.Tech. in CSE or IT, or an M.Sc. in Computer Science, Information Technology or Software Engineering, or an MCA, "and a valid GATE score in Computer Science". The newer 2024–25 curriculum does not repeat an eligibility line. I found no official NIT Trichy page that names the GATE DA paper for this programme, so a DA paper holder should confirm on the CCMT eligibility matrix during registration before adding it to the choice list.
M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering
The CSE department's M.Tech page links to an admission procedure page that reads "under construction", so the department does not print its own eligibility list. For this programme, the CCMT eligibility matrix shown at registration is the only official statement of which degrees and GATE papers qualify.
If you are writing GATE DA in 2027 and want an M.Tech at NIT Trichy, this is the one point to settle before you lock choices. If you are writing GATE CSE, the Data Analytics wording above already names your paper.
CCMT 2026 GATE scores for Data Analytics and CSE
CCMT publishes a table titled "Maximum and Minimum GATE Score of CCMT Counselling" for every round. The 2026 table lists both NIT Trichy programmes under group G1 in Round 1 and "Group 1" in later rounds. The figures below are copied as printed, as GATE scores out of 1000.
| Programme | Round | Category | Max | Min |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Analytics | Round 1 | OPEN | 803 | 747 |
| Data Analytics | Round 1 | OBC-NCL | 743 | 694 |
| Data Analytics | Round 1 | EWS | 728 | 711 |
| Data Analytics | Round 3 | OPEN | 714 | 710 |
| Computer Science & Engineering | Round 1 | OPEN | 815 | 782 |
| Computer Science & Engineering | Round 1 | OBC-NCL | 762 | 739 |
| Computer Science & Engineering | Round 1 | EWS | 778 | 777 |
| Computer Science & Engineering | Round 3 | OPEN | 758 | 758 |
The Round 1 SC and ST rows and the National Spot Round OPEN row are in the cut-off list on this page. Two cautions apply. CCMT's table does not say which GATE paper each admitted candidate wrote, so these are scores for the programme group, not for the DA or CS paper separately. And for Special Rounds and the National Spot Round, CCMT notes that the scores cover only candidates who got a new seat or were upgraded, so they are not comparable with Round 1.
MS (by Research): the January 2027 call
The MS (by Research) admissions page advertises a January 2027 session with two categories only: Full-Time (Project), for candidates selected under sponsored projects run by NIT Trichy faculty, and Part-Time (Sponsored), for staff of organisations such as public sector R&D labs that have an MoU with NIT Trichy. The call has no open, GATE-based full-time category.
According to the January 2027 brochure, you need a B.E./B.Tech. with 60% or 6.5 CGPA (55% or 6.0 CGPA for SC, ST and PwD). Selection is by screening of applications followed by an offline interview, tentatively scheduled for 15 to 17 December 2026. Applications close on 13 November 2026 at 11:59 PM, through the institute's e-SAMARTH admission portal. Computer Science and Engineering is among the departments listed.
PhD in CSE or Computer Applications: January 2027
The PhD admissions page and the January 2027 brochure set out how GATE fits in for 2026–27.
- For full-time HTRA (Half-time Research Assistantship) seats in engineering disciplines and for applicants with an M.Tech, a GATE score is not mandatory. NIT Trichy instead conducts a National Level Ph.D. entrance test as the alternative for 2026–27.
- For Computer Applications applicants with an MCA or M.Sc., the brochure asks for a qualified GATE score, UGC NET or NBHM score.
- Every category is selected by screening, a written test and an interview held offline, tentatively 15 to 17 December 2026.
The tentative HTRA seat vacancy matrix lists 4 seats for Computer Science and Engineering and 5 for Computer Applications. The CSE qualifying-degree list for PhD is long and includes UG degrees in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, CSE (Data Science) and CSE (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning), with a PG degree in CS, CSE, IT or a relevant field. The application window runs from 19 October to 13 November 2026.
Official contacts and how to prepare
For M.Tech admission queries, NIT Trichy's M.Tech page gives pg@nitt.edu and +91-431-2504940. For MS (by Research), it is msadmission@nitt.edu. CCMT queries go to CCMT itself, through the contact details on ccmt.admissions.nic.in.
Since the 2026 Round 1 minimums for both programmes were in the high 700s for OPEN, your GATE score decides most of this. Work from the syllabus and past papers for your paper: GATE DA with the GATE DA 2027 preparation guide, or GATE CSE with the GATE CSE 2027 guide. Solve previous year questions and timed sets on practice. Other institutes covered on this site are listed under institutes, including NIT Warangal and NIT Calicut.

Frequently asked questions
Does NIT Trichy run its own M.Tech entrance or application for GATE candidates?
No. For regular GATE candidates, NIT Trichy's 2026–27 M.Tech admissions page sends you to CCMT. Only the sponsored category and DASA (for foreign nationals, PIOs, NRIs and OCIs) have separate applications.
Can I apply to M.Tech Data Analytics at NIT Trichy with a GATE DA score?
NIT Trichy's own Data Analytics curriculum (applicable from 2022–23) names a valid GATE score in Computer Science, and I found no NIT Trichy page that names the DA paper. Check the CCMT eligibility matrix at registration, which maps degrees to GATE papers for every programme.
Which department runs M.Tech Data Analytics?
The Department of Computer Applications, not the CSE department. It shows up as its own programme under NIT Trichy on CCMT.
What GATE score did NIT Trichy M.Tech CSE close at in 2026?
CCMT's 2026 table prints a Round 1 OPEN maximum of 815 and minimum of 782 for Computer Science & Engineering (group G1), and a Round 3 OPEN figure of 758. These are GATE scores out of 1000, not marks.
Is a GATE score from 2024 still valid for CCMT?
For the 2026 cycle, yes. The CCMT 2026 brochure accepted GATE scores of 2024, 2025 and 2026. Check the CCMT 2027 brochure for your own year.
Can I join MS (by Research) at NIT Trichy directly with GATE in January 2027?
Not as an open GATE applicant. The January 2027 call is limited to Full-Time (Project) and Part-Time (Sponsored) candidates, selected by screening and an interview.
Is GATE mandatory for a PhD in CSE at NIT Trichy?
For the January 2027 session, the brochure says GATE is not mandatory for engineering HTRA applicants with an M.Tech, and a National Level Ph.D. entrance test conducted at NIT Trichy serves as the alternative. All categories then face a written test and interview.
What minimum marks does CCMT ask for in the qualifying degree?
For 2026, at least 6.5 CGPA or 60% for GEN, GEN-EWS and OBC candidates, and 6.0 CGPA or 55% for SC, ST and PwD candidates, as per the CCMT 2026 brochure.
