IIIT Hyderabad PG Admission: Where GATE Counts and Where PGEE Decides
IIIT Hyderabad fills M.Tech CSE and MS seats through its own PGEE, not COAP. Where GATE does count: PhD shortlisting and the M.Tech in PDM.

Why IIIT Hyderabad works differently from the IITs
IIIT Hyderabad is not an IIT or an NIT, and it does not make M.Tech offers through COAP or CCMT. Its PG admissions page says all admissions are handled directly through the portals on the institute's own website. The PG Admissions office is at IIIT Hyderabad, Gachibowli, Hyderabad 500 032, open Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM IST.
The main route is the Postgraduate Entrance Examination (PGEE), a computer-based test held at centres in several cities. For the Monsoon 2026 cycle it covered three programme levels:
- M.Tech (coursework-based, 2 years) in Computer Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Information Security, Product Design and Management, Computer Aided Structural Engineering, and VLSI and Semiconductor Technologies
- MS by Research (2 years) in CSE, ECE, CE and BIO
- PhD (5 years) in CSE, ECE and several other research areas
If you live in or near the city, the Hyderabad exam city page covers GATE centres there. For PGEE centres, IIIT Hyderabad publishes its own list.
M.Tech in CSE and CSIS: the PGEE decides, not GATE
The PGEE page says it plainly: admission for M.Tech programmes is solely based on the written exam, which involves General Aptitude and Subject Tests. CSE candidates take the CSE & GA paper. Neither the PGEE page nor the M.Tech admission process page mentions GATE, so on the official record a GATE score plays no part in M.Tech CSE or M.Tech CSIS selection.
Who can sit for it
For both the M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering and the M.Tech in Computer Science and Information Security, the qualifying degree listed is B.E/B.Tech/M.E/M.Tech in any branch, a 4-year B.S (with Maths), M.Sc, MCA or MA (Maths). All programmes need 60% or equivalent in the qualifying degree.
This is good news for a GATE DA candidate without a CS degree. The eligibility is open to all engineering branches and to maths graduates, and the selection rests on one written test. Bad news if you were counting on a strong GATE score alone: you will have to sit the PGEE as well. The syllabus is on IIIT Hyderabad's Monsoon syllabus page.
The Monsoon 2026 PGEE timeline
The 2026 cycle ran early in the year, well before most GATE-based IIT offers. Dates from the official PGEE and M.Tech pages:
| Step | Date (Monsoon 2026) |
|---|---|
| Application portal opened | 20 February 2026 |
| Admit cards released | 21 April 2026 |
| PGEE written exam | 2 May 2026, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM |
| M.Tech results and Round 1 seat allocation | 9 May 2026 |
| M.Tech Round 2 and Round 3 results | 15 May and 20 May 2026 |
| MS by Research interviews (on campus) | 10 and 11 June 2026 |
| PhD interviews (on campus) | 12 and 13 June 2026 |
| M.Tech final round results | 30 June 2026 |
The closing date on the official page is printed in a garbled form ("31st March 5th April 2026"), so we have not stated it. The CSE paper's official syllabus lists digital logic, C programming, data structures, basic algorithms and problem solving, discrete mathematics and probability, relational databases (functional dependencies, SQL), computer networks and operating systems, all of which also appear in GATE CS. Applications for the 2027 cycle had not opened when we checked.
MS by Research in CSE
The MS by Research in Computer Science and Engineering goes through the same PGEE, followed by an on-campus subject interview for shortlisted candidates. Eligibility mirrors the M.Tech CSE: any B.E/B.Tech branch, M.E/M.Tech, a 4-year B.S with Maths, M.Sc, MCA or MA (Maths), with 60% or equivalent.
The official MS/PhD process page does not mention GATE for MS applicants, and the PGEE research results for the CSE group were announced separately on 23 May 2026. The final offer depends solely on interview performance.
A separate Standing Committee route exists for MS by Research and PhD, meant for candidates with extraordinary academic performance and R&D experience. Applications go by email with a CV and Statement of Purpose to scadmissions@iiit.ac.in and can be sent through the year. That page does not mention GATE either.
PhD in CSE: where a high GATE score helps
This is where GATE has a defined role. The official MS/PhD process page states that PhD applicants with a high GATE score will be shortlisted directly for interview, skipping the PGEE written test. Others exempted from the test include CFTI graduates with a GPA of at least 7 out of 10 after internal screening, and candidates with a currently valid NET qualification. The page does not give a number for what counts as a high GATE score, and it does not name a GATE paper.
IIIT Hyderabad also runs Winter Research Admissions for PhD programmes. For the 2026 round (for Spring 2027), applications are screened on academic performance, standard exam scores such as GATE, merit scholarships such as CSIR-UGC NET, and CV or work experience. Shortlisted applicants come to campus for a technical interview, and final selection is based on the interview alone. The official page lists:
- Portal open from 14 October to 20 November 2026
- Shortlist on 29 November 2026
- Interviews on 11 and 12 December 2026
- Selections on 17 December 2026
The same page says NET/GATE-qualified full-time PhD students receive a monthly stipend between Rs. 37,000 and Rs. 42,000.
M.Tech in Product Design and Management: GATE required
The one M.Tech at IIIT Hyderabad with a GATE requirement printed on its admission page is the M.Tech in Product Design and Management (PDM). For the 2026 intake, the PDM admissions page says applicants must have a qualified GATE score, from either 2026 or 2025. The degree can be a 4-year Bachelor's in Engineering, Technology, Design or Science, or a 2-year Master's in Science or Computer Applications, with 60% or equivalent.
Selection was by application and Statement of Purpose, a shortlist, and an on-campus interview with a case study assessed by a panel from technology, management and design. The 2026 interviews were held on 27 June 2026, with results on 1 July 2026. The page also says GATE scholars get a stipend as per AICTE norms. The page does not restrict the GATE paper, so read the current notice if you are applying on a DA score.
Cut-offs at IIIT Hyderabad
IIIT Hyderabad does not publish GATE cut-offs for any programme on the pages we checked, and none would be meaningful for M.Tech CSE since GATE is not part of that selection. The PGEE page does not print PGEE qualifying marks either. For PhD shortlisting, the official wording is only "high GATE score", with no number. We have left the cut-off table empty and will add figures only if the institute publishes them.
Planning for IIIT Hyderabad alongside GATE
If IIIT Hyderabad is on your list for an M.Tech in CSE, treat the PGEE as a separate exam with its own application window in February to April. The official syllabus says the General Aptitude paper emphasises basic aptitude, logical reasoning and basic questions on computers and mathematics. A GATE DA candidate should look at the CSE paper's topic list early: it includes digital logic, C programming, computer networks and operating systems, so compare it with what your DA preparation already covers.
Our GATE DA page and GATE CSE page set out both syllabi, the GATE DA 2027 guide and GATE CSE 2027 guide cover planning, and the PYQ page has past GATE papers. For GATE-based routes in the same city, see IIT Hyderabad.
Frequently asked questions
Does a GATE DA or CS score get me into M.Tech CSE at IIIT Hyderabad?
