VNIT Nagpur and its CSE department
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology gives its address as South Ambazari Road, Nagpur 440010, in Maharashtra. For a reader in the south it means travelling north for reporting, so plan for that before you fill choices.
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering says it was established in 1987 and offers B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD degrees. Its academics page adds the detail that matters for a GATE taker:
- M.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering has run full-time since 2007, and the current intake is 38, in full-time mode only. The part-time M.Tech has been discontinued.
- M.Tech electives are grouped under areas including CS core, image processing, security, NLP, data analytics and AI/ML.
- The PhD programme has run full-time since 2007.
- A B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence & Data Science starts in 2026 with 60 seats.
GATE DA or CS: what CCMT accepts for M.Tech CSE
In the CCMT 2026 mapping, VNIT's Department of Computer Science & Engineering has one programme, Computer Science & Engineering, in Group 1. It lists 80 qualifying degrees, and every one of them appears twice: once against GATE DA and once against GATE CS. No other paper is mapped.
The 80 degrees are broad. They include Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Science, and also Electronics and Communication, Electrical, Electrical and Electronics, Instrumentation and Telecommunication degrees, as well as Bioinformatics. So a DA taker with an electrical or electronics B.Tech had a mapped route into M.Tech CSE in 2026, as did a CS taker from the same branches.
Two programmes outside the CSE department also showed up for these papers. Biomedical Engineering, under Mechanical Engineering, listed DA and CS against any B.E./B.Tech, M.Sc., MBBS and several other degrees. Control and Automation, under Electrical Engineering, listed CS for 10 degrees. Check the 2027 mapping when CCMT publishes it, since it changes each year.
How CCMT 2026 ran for VNIT
The CCMT 2026 schedule opened registration and choice filling on 15 May 2026, with the last date for registration on 5 June and for locking choices on 8 June. Seat allotments followed:
| Round | Allotment announced |
|---|---|
| Round 1 | 12 June 2026 |
| Round 2 | 22 June 2026 |
| Round 3 | 27 June 2026 |
| Special Round 1 | 22 July 2026 |
| Special Round 2 | 27 July 2026 |
| National Spot Round | 5 August 2026 |
VNIT's admissions page set institute reporting for CCMT and CCMN 2026 admits from 6 to 11 August 2026, with the Auditorium named as the reporting venue. The academic section lists dr_acd@vnit.ac.in and acadsection@vnit.ac.in for queries.
CCMT 2026 GATE scores for M.Tech CSE
CCMT's Maximum and Minimum GATE Score report gives the highest and lowest GATE score among candidates allotted each programme in each round. These are GATE scores out of 1000, copied as printed.
Round 1 (group printed as G1)
| Category | Max GATE score | Min GATE score |
|---|---|---|
| OPEN | 679 | 648 |
| EWS | 641 | 633 |
| OBC-NCL | 633 | 625 |
| SC | 512 | 491 |
| ST | 422 | 407 |
National Spot Round (group printed as Group 1)
| Category | Max GATE score | Min GATE score |
|---|---|---|
| OPEN | 625 | 583 |
| EWS | 574 | 545 |
| OBC-NCL | 571 | 568 |
| SC | 442 | 434 |
| ST | 341 | 331 |
The report does not separate DA from CS. Both papers were mapped to the same group, so these figures can include candidates from either paper in one merit list. The same report also lists Rounds 2 and 3 and two special rounds. Read them as a record of who was allotted in 2026, not a promise for 2027.
The Institute Spot Round in August 2026
After CCMT, VNIT ran its own Institute Spot Round II (ISR-2026) on 25 August 2026 for provisional vacant seats. According to the ISR-II brochure on the admissions page, it admitted Group A (GATE qualified) and Group B (non-GATE) candidates, with Group B sitting a written test on the day and separate merit lists by category.
For a CSE aspirant the useful fact is a negative one. The provisional vacant-seat list for ISR-II named 18 programmes and 168 seats, and Computer Science & Engineering was not among them. The written-test timetable for that day also had no CSE slot. In 2026, then, the M.Tech CSE seats were filled inside CCMT.
The provisional merit list VNIT posted for ISR-II covers other departments. Several of its pages are scanned images without a text layer.
Sponsored M.Tech and M.Tech (Research)
Working candidates have two separate routes, both described in documents linked from the admissions page.
The M.Tech sponsored admissions brochure for 2026-27 lists M.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering) among its programmes, with up to 5 non-stipendiary sponsored seats per programme. Candidates need at least two years of full-time work experience after the qualifying degree. Group C1 is for candidates recommended by government bodies, R&D organisations and PSUs; Group C2 for industry candidates and private-college teachers with qualified GATE scores; and Group C3 for the same people without GATE, who sit a written test.
The M.Tech (Research) brochure for January 2027 adds 5 supernumerary seats per M.Tech programme, CSE included. It needs a 6.0 CGPA and at least five years of industry, teaching or academic staff experience. GATE is not mandatory, and selection is through a research proposal presentation, an interview and a written test if the Board of Studies decides on one. A final-year student is not the audience for either route.
PhD in CSE: the January 2027 cycle
The Ph.D. information brochure for January 2027 and its important-dates sheet, both linked from the admissions page, set out the cycle now running:
| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| Notification | 25 September 2026 |
| Last date for application | 2 November 2026 |
| List of eligible candidates | 20 November 2026 |
| CSE written test and interview | 2 December 2026 |
| Provisional selection list | 8 December 2026 |
| Joining | 4 to 11 January 2027 |
For CSE the eligible degrees are a B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in computer science, IT, computer engineering or allied branches, or in electronics and allied branches. The general minimum for OPEN candidates is 6.5 CGPA or 60% at UG or PG. The CSE written test covers programming and data structures, operating systems, compilers, theory of computation, algorithms, discrete mathematics, computer organisation, DBMS and networks.
GATE matters in two ways. The institute assistantship (Category 1A) is only for GATE or NET qualified candidates. And the final list weights a GATE or NET score at 40%, with the written test at 40% and interview at 20%; without a score, the split is 60% written and 40% interview.
Planning a 2027 attempt with VNIT in mind
Because CCMT mapped DA and CS to the same 80 degrees in 2026, the choice of paper for VNIT's M.Tech CSE comes down to which one you will score higher in. Both papers feed one merit list, so a score in either counts the same way. If you are weighing the two, the GATE DA and GATE CSE pages set out each syllabus, and the DA 2027 guide and CSE 2027 guide give a study plan.
The same CCMT form can carry southern NITs as well; their routes are on our pages for NIT Warangal and NIT Calicut. For exam dates and rules, see the GATE 2027 page and gate2027.iitm.ac.in.

Frequently asked questions
With a GATE DA score, can I get into VNIT's M.Tech CSE?
Yes, on the 2026 record. CCMT's 2026 mapping lists GATE DA and GATE CS against the same 80 qualifying degrees for M.Tech Computer Science & Engineering, so a DA score was as valid as a CS score.
My B.Tech is in Electrical or ECE. Am I eligible?
In 2026, yes. The 80 degrees mapped include Electronics and Communication, Electrical, Electrical and Electronics, Instrumentation and Telecommunication, with either DA or CS.
What GATE score got a Round 1 seat in 2026?
CCMT's 2026 report shows Round 1 OPEN allotments from 679 down to 648. EWS ran 641 to 633, OBC-NCL 633 to 625, SC 512 to 491 and ST 422 to 407.
How low did it go by the National Spot Round?
The National Spot Round printed OPEN 625 and 583, EWS 574 and 545, OBC-NCL 571 and 568, SC 442 and 434, and ST 341 and 331.
How many M.Tech CSE seats are there?
The CSE department's academics page gives the current intake as 38, in full-time mode only. Sponsored seats, up to 5 per programme, are separate.
Did VNIT fill M.Tech CSE seats in its own spot round?
Not in 2026. The provisional vacant-seat list for Institute Spot Round II on 25 August 2026 covered 18 programmes and did not include Computer Science & Engineering.
Does a GATE score help for a PhD in CSE?
Yes. In the January 2027 cycle a GATE or NET score is weighted at 40% of the final list, and the institute assistantship is only for GATE or NET qualified candidates.
Is there a non-GATE M.Tech in CSE at VNIT?
Only for working candidates: Group C3 sponsored seats with a written test and two years of experience, or M.Tech (Research) with five years of experience. Regular M.Tech CSE seats go through CCMT.
