GATE admission routes at IIT (BHU) Varanasi

Where a GATE DA or CS taker fits at IIT (BHU)

The institute gives its address as Varanasi 221 005, and its PhD brochure describes ten engineering departments, three science departments, a Humanistic Studies department and three interdisciplinary schools. Three of these units are worth a close look if you are writing GATE DA or GATE CS.

  • Computer Science and Engineering was established in July 1983. Its department page lists a B.Tech, a dual degree, a full-time M.Tech with specialisations in Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things, and a PhD. It says M.Tech admission is through GATE.
  • Mathematical Sciences admits PhD students, and its eligibility includes a B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing, Computer Engineering or Computer Science.
  • The School of N.C. Jain Decision Sciences and Engineering runs an M.Tech that the 2025 cut-off sheet opens to any GATE paper, plus a PhD whose research areas include data analytics, AI and ML.

Everything below comes from IIT (BHU)'s own PDFs and pages. Where the current year's M.Tech brochure is not online, the page says so rather than filling the gap.

M.Tech programmes and the GATE papers printed for them

The portal's list of M.Tech programmes gives each one a code, and the same codes appear on the 2025 cut-off sheet. For a DA or CS taker the relevant rows are these.

Programme Code GATE paper column on the 2025 sheet
Computer Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence CS-AI CS IT and DA
Computer Science and Engineering, Internet of Things CS-IOT CS IT and DA
Decision Sciences and Engineering DE ANY GATE PAPER

So the institute treated GATE DA as eligible for both CSE specialisations in 2025, alongside the CS paper. The two specialisations are separate programmes with separate cut-offs, so you choose between AI and IoT at the application stage rather than after joining.

The PG ordinance sets the frame: M.Tech admission may be on valid GATE scores, a written test, an interview, or any combination, as decided by the departmental postgraduate committee (DPGC). It also says that where candidates from allied disciplines are eligible, no single allied discipline may take more than 40% of a department's seats.

How the M.Tech cycle runs, and what is not online yet

The 2025 cut-off sheet is titled "M.Tech. Admissions through COAP for the year 2025 in IIT(BHU)", so GATE-based M.Tech offers that year were made through COAP, the common offer portal the IITs share. Applications themselves go through the institute's own PG admission portal at pgadmission.iitbhu.ac.in.

As of November 2026 that portal carries only the PhD call for the even semester of 2026-27. The M.Tech brochure for the 2026 cycle is no longer posted, and the DOAA PG admissions page links only the 2025 cut-off PDF for M.Tech. This page therefore does not state 2026 M.Tech dates, seat numbers or minimum marks. For the 2027 cycle, expect the M.Tech call to appear on the same portal after GATE 2027 results; the ordinance says admissions are normally made in April-May for the first semester and November-December for the second.

If you are coming from the south, note that the ordinance says the Dean of Academic Affairs notifies the admission calendar each semester, and that M.Tech and PhD admissions may happen in either semester. The portal is the only place the dates appear, so check it rather than relying on last year's timeline.

The 2025 GATE cut-off scores IIT (BHU) published

The institute's 2025 sheet gives non-PwD and PwD cut-offs for GEN, OBC-NCL, SC, ST and EWS. For the rows that matter here, the non-PwD figures are printed as follows.

Programme (code) GEN OBC-NCL SC ST EWS
CSE, Artificial Intelligence (CS-AI) 772 721 569 - -
CSE, Internet of Things (CS-IOT) 757 706 564 - -
Decision Sciences and Engineering (DE) 380 504 417 254 563

A dash is printed where no cut-off is given, including every PwD column for these three programmes. These are GATE scores out of 1000, and the sheet does not say which round they belong to. Treat them as a record of one year. They are not a promise about 2027, and the sheet is a single combined figure for each programme, so it does not separate DA takers from CS takers.

For the exam itself, the GATE 2027 hub collects dates and paper details.

PhD in Computer Science and Engineering: the open December 2026 call

The PhD call for the even semester of 2026-27 is live. The portal opened on 23 October 2026 and closes at 1700 hrs on 9 November 2026. The CSE eligibility row asks for a B.Tech, B.E., M.Tech or M.E. in Computer Science, Computer Technology, IT, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Artificial Intelligence or Maths and Computing, or an M.Sc. (Computer Science), MCA or equivalent master's, and says all such candidates "must have qualified GATE in CSIT/DA".

Timeline for this call

Step Date
Shortlist notified on the portal by 16 November 2026
CSE test/interview 23-24 November 2026
Offers and wait list announced 4 December 2026
Admission fee deadline 14 December 2026
Classes begin 5 January 2027

The brochure says selection is by written test, interview or both for shortlisted candidates, run by the department. Applicants with a qualifying degree from an IIT and a CPI of 8.00 or above are exempt from the written test and are interviewed first. Table 1C lists 13 Institute Assistantships in CSE for this semester, and the brochure warns that this number should not be read as the number of seats. One supernumerary seat is also offered under the Jay Chaudhry Software Innovation Centre project.

Two things to know before you travel. The portal says hostel facility will not be available for this intake and HRA will be paid as per institute norms. Shortlists, call letters and offers are sent only through the portal and by email.

PhD routes in Mathematical Sciences and Decision Sciences

The same December 2026 call covers these two units, with interviews on different days.

Mathematical Sciences accepts a master's in Statistics, Computer Science or Computer Engineering with Mathematics at bachelor's level, or a B.Tech or B.E. in Mathematics and Computing, Computer Engineering or Computer Science. The brochure does not name a GATE paper for this department, so check with the department before applying on a DA score. Its tests and interviews are on 28-29 November 2026, and the brochure lists 13 assistantships.

Decision Sciences and Engineering asks for a master's (M.Com., MBA, MCA, an allied M.Sc., or an M.Tech in any branch) with at least 60% or CPI 6.0, or a B.Tech or B.E. in an allied area with a CGPA of 8.0 or above. Its interviews are on 26-27 November 2026, and only one assistantship is listed for the semester.

For all PhD applicants, the general rule in the brochure is a GATE, GPAT or NET-JRF qualification with the stated minimum marks. A bachelor's-only applicant in engineering needs 75% or a CPI of 7.5.

Contacts and a plan for the 2027 cycle

Portal and application queries go to help.admission@iitbhu.ac.in. Programme queries go to the head or coordinator of the department or school, whose contacts are listed on the portal. The application fee for the current PhD call is Rs. 500 for GEN, OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS candidates and Rs. 250 for SC, ST and PwD candidates, paid online.

A workable sequence for a DA or CS aspirant:

  1. Prepare for GATE 2027 with the GATE DA plan or the GATE CSE plan, and test yourself on past papers.
  2. After results, watch the DOAA PG admissions page and the portal for the M.Tech call and register on COAP when it opens.
  3. Decide between CS-AI and CS-IOT before applying, since they are ranked separately.
  4. If research appeals more, the PhD calls run each semester; the December 2026 one closes on 9 November.

Other national IITs with DA-friendly routes are on IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur, and the full list is on Institutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get into the IIT (BHU) CSE M.Tech with a GATE DA score?

In 2025, yes. The institute's COAP 2025 cut-off sheet prints "CS IT and DA" as the GATE paper for both CS-AI and CS-IOT. Confirm the paper list in the 2027 M.Tech call when it is posted on the PG admission portal.

What were the 2025 GATE cut-offs for M.Tech CSE at IIT (BHU)?

For CS-AI the sheet prints 772 (GEN), 721 (OBC-NCL) and 569 (SC); for CS-IOT it prints 757, 706 and 564. ST and EWS show a dash. These are GATE scores out of 1000, and no round is stated.

Is there a written test or interview for the M.Tech?

The PG ordinance lets each department decide between GATE score, a written test, an interview or a mix. The 2026 M.Tech brochure is no longer online, so this page cannot say what CSE used in 2026.

Which GATE papers does the CSE PhD accept?

The even semester 2026-27 brochure says candidates must have qualified GATE in CSIT/DA, which covers the CS and DA papers. IIT graduates with a CPI of 8.00 or above are exempt from the written test.

Can I still apply for a PhD this semester?

The portal for the December 2026 intake is open until 1700 hrs on 9 November 2026. CSE tests and interviews are on 23-24 November and offers are due on 4 December 2026.

Is hostel accommodation available for new PhD students?

Not for the current even semester call. The portal says hostel facility will not be available and HRA will be provided as per institute norms.

Does IIT (BHU) have a separate data science M.Tech for DA takers?

The portal's programme list shows no M.Tech titled data science. The closest options are CSE's Artificial Intelligence specialisation and the Decision Sciences and Engineering M.Tech, which took any GATE paper in 2025.

Who do I contact about an IIT (BHU) application?

Write to help.admission@iitbhu.ac.in for portal issues. For programme questions, contact the head or coordinator of the department, listed on the portal's contact page.
