GATE 2027 in Chandigarh: Mohali-Chandigarh Exam City and IIT Roorkee Zone

GATE 2027 in Chandigarh: the Mohali-Chandigarh exam city, IIT Roorkee zone, which Haryana and Himachal cities fit, and nearby institutes.

Updated 3 November 2026 · GATEiit Team

One entry for the tricity

Look for "Chandigarh" on the official GATE 2027 exam-city page and you will not find it on its own. The entry is Mohali-Chandigarh, and it sits under Punjab, in the zone coordinated by IIT Roorkee. The list has no separate Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula option.

The three places come under three different governments. Chandigarh is a Union Territory run by the Chandigarh Administration. Mohali is a tehsil of SAS Nagar district, Punjab. Panchkula is a district of Haryana. GATE does not care about that split. Whichever side of the tricity you live or study in, you select Mohali-Chandigarh and GATE allots the centre. The admit card gives the address, so do not assume it will be on your side of the tricity.

The official page sets three rules. You choose six cities. All six must come from the same zone. The list is tentative, and GATE may add or remove a city or allot one outside your options. GATE 2027 is held only in India.

Haryana and Himachal: which cities fit

Because Mohali-Chandigarh is an IIT Roorkee-zone city, every other choice on your form must be in that zone too. The two neighbouring states behave very differently.

State IIT Roorkee zone (fits with Mohali-Chandigarh) Other zone (does not fit)
Haryana Ambala Faridabad, Gurugram (IIT Delhi)
Himachal Pradesh Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Palampur, Shimla-Solan, Una none
Punjab Amritsar, Bathinda, Jalandhar-Phagwara, Ludhiana, Pathankot, Patiala none

Haryana has only three exam cities on the list, and two of them are in the IIT Delhi zone. If your family is in Gurugram, you cannot put Gurugram as a back-up behind Mohali-Chandigarh. Towns such as Panchkula and Kurukshetra have no entry of their own, so a student from there picks a listed city, and Mohali-Chandigarh or Ambala keeps you in the IIT Roorkee zone.

Himachal is the easy one. All eight of its cities are in the IIT Roorkee zone. One detail to watch: the list has two cities called Bilaspur. The Himachal one is in our zone; the other, under Chhattisgarh, is in the IIT Kharagpur zone. Pick the one under Himachal Pradesh.

Six choices starting from Mohali-Chandigarh

The IIT Roorkee zone also covers Uttarakhand (Almora, Dehradun, Haldwani, Pauri-Garhwal, Roorkee) and part of western Uttar Pradesh, so you will not run short of back-ups. One list for a tricity student:

  1. Mohali-Chandigarh
  2. Ambala
  3. Patiala
  4. Ludhiana
  5. Shimla-Solan
  6. Una, Dehradun or Jalandhar-Phagwara

Put your home town higher if it is in the zone. A student from Kangra or Mandi might move it to second, because a night at home before the exam beats a night in a strange city. The aim is a list of places you could actually reach on an exam morning, not the longest list possible.

Cross-zone traps for students from elsewhere

If your home is outside the tricity, remember that GATE 2027 falls on three weekends: 6 and 7, 13 and 14, and 20 and 21 February. Decide which zone you are writing in before you build the list.

  • Jammu and Kashmir: Jammu - Samba and Srinagar are in the IIT Delhi zone. A Jammu student studying in Mohali has to pick one zone or the other.
  • Delhi NCR: New Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad and Greater NOIDA are IIT Delhi zone. NOIDA, Ghaziabad and Meerut are IIT Roorkee zone and do fit with Mohali-Chandigarh.

If you are going to be in NCR in February, read the Delhi page, which works through both NCR zones.

Registration closed with the special window on 16 October 2026. The important dates page lists the application data correction window (on candidate request, with a fee) as TBA, so check it before you assume a city can still change.

The IIT Roorkee zone office and exam day

Questions about your exam city go to the zone office, as listed on the official page:

Write from your registered email ID with your enrolment ID. For the portal or the paper, the organising institute for GATE 2027 is IIT Madras (helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in, 044-22578200).

The city allotment notification is due on 4 January 2027. The admit card date is TBA, and the admit card is where your centre and reporting time appear. Since Mohali-Chandigarh covers more than one town, look up the centre as soon as you have it and plan the route from where you will stay the night before.

Carry the printed admit card, the original photo ID you entered in the application, and whatever else the admit card lists. If you are writing DA and CS as two papers, the two-paper page says the second centre may differ from the first but will be in the same city. Results are due on 19 March 2027.

In Chandigarh itself, GATEiit has a page for PEC Chandigarh. Nearby in the region:

Each page explains the GATE routes for DA and CSE candidates. Further away, GATEiit has pages for IIT Roorkee in Uttarakhand, which is also our zone office, and IIT Delhi. The rest are on /institutes.

The exam city plays no part in admission. Writing in Mandi does not help with IIT Mandi.

Preparing from the tricity with GATEiit

GATEiit is an online site with free material. It has no centre, office or classroom in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula or anywhere else.

Start from your paper page, GATE DA for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence or GATE CSE for Computer Science and Information Technology. Each has the syllabus and the WhatsApp group link. DA and CS are an allowed two-paper combination in GATE 2027.

Past papers are on /pyq and topic-wise questions on /practice. The GATE DA 2027 guide and the GATE CSE 2027 guide set out a plan, and /guides has more. All GATE 2027 sessions are on Saturdays and Sundays, so a weekend mock is the best rehearsal. The GATE 2027 page has the full schedule and the exam-city overview links other cities.
