GATE DA 2026 Q55: Regularised loss for one ridge regression example

Question

Consider that Linear Ridge Regression is being used to learn a prediction function ypred=wTxy_{pred} = w^T x, where w,x∈R2w, x \in \mathbb{R}^2 and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) is used to measure the prediction error. A weight of 0.20 is associated with the regularizer.

At an intermediate step of the training process, assume that the parameter w=[−3.00,4.00]Tw = [-3.00, 4.00]^T. In the next step, for the input x=[1.00,2.00]Tx = [1.00, 2.00]^T, the predicted value of yy is noted. Let the relation between x=[x1,x2]Tx = [x_1, x_2]^T and the true value of yy be ytrue=x1+x2y_{true} = x_1 + x_2.

The value of the overall regularized loss function for this instance is _______. (Rounded off to two decimal places)

Try it: numerical answer: type the value

Numerical answer. No negative marking.
Show answer and explanation

Answer: 6.9 to 7.1 (official GATE 2026 final answer key)

Concept used: Ridge loss = error + λ∥w∥22\lambda \|w\|_2^2.

First step: ypred=−3+8=5y_{pred} = -3 + 8 = 5 and ytrue=3y_{true} = 3, so MAE =2= 2; the penalty is 0.2×(9+16)0.2 \times (9 + 16).
