GATE DA 2026 Q29: One SGD step on f(x) = wx

Question

Consider that for a supervised learning task, the objective function being minimized is fw(x)=wxf_w(x) = wx, where x∈Rx \in \mathbb{R} is the input and w∈Rw \in \mathbb{R} is the parameter. Stochastic Gradient Descent with learning rate of 0.10 is used for parameter updates.

Suppose that at the end of iteration ii, the value of ww becomes 10.00.

Let x=10.00x = 10.00 be the input for iteration (i+1)(i + 1).

The value of ww at the end of iteration (i+1)(i + 1) is __________. (Rounded off to two decimal places)

Try it: numerical answer: type the value

Numerical answer. No negative marking.
Show answer and explanation

Answer: 8.9 to 9.1 (official GATE 2026 final answer key)

Concept used: Gradient descent update: w←w−η ∂f∂ww \leftarrow w - \eta \, \dfrac{\partial f}{\partial w}.

First step: ∂f∂w=x=10\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial w} = x = 10, so w=10−0.1×10w = 10 - 0.1 \times 10.
