GATE DA 2026 Q26: Operations that never violate a foreign key

Question

Consider two relations r and s defined on the relational schemas R(A,B) and S(E,C), respectively. A is the primary key of R and E is a foreign key of S referencing A in R.

Which of the following operations will NEVER violate the foreign key constraint?

Try it: multiple select: one or more correct options

Select one or more options
Select all correct options. No negative marking, no partial marks.
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A, B (official GATE 2026 final answer key)

Concept used: Referential integrity: every foreign-key value in s must exist as a key in r.

First step: Deleting from r can orphan rows of s, and inserting into s can reference a missing key; the other two cannot.
