GATE CSE 2025 Session 1 Q49: Algebraic structure of functions under pointwise addition

Question

A={0,1,2,3,…}A = \{0, 1, 2, 3, \ldots\} is the set of non-negative integers. Let F\mathcal{F} be the set of functions from AA to itself. For any two functions, f1,f2∈Ff_1, f_2 \in \mathcal{F}, we define

(f1⊙f2)(n)=f1(n)+f2(n)(f_1 \odot f_2)(n) = f_1(n) + f_2(n)

for every number nn in AA. Which of the following is/are CORRECT about the mathematical structure (F,⊙)(\mathcal{F}, \odot)?

Answer: B (official GATE 2025 final answer key)

Concept used: Pointwise addition inherits closure, associativity, commutativity and identity from (A,+)(A, +), but not inverses.

First step: The zero function is the identity; check whether a function like f(n)=1f(n) = 1 has an inverse whose values stay non-negative.
