What GATE XH is, and who it is for
XH is the Humanities and Social Sciences paper. If you studied economics, English, linguistics, philosophy, psychology or sociology, this is the GATE paper written for you.
That surprises people, because GATE has an engineering reputation, yet its eligibility rules cover arts, commerce and science graduates too and XH exists precisely for them. You write a common section, XH0, which tests reading and reasoning, plus the one subject section you selected at application.
Browse the full list of GATE papers if you want to see how XH sits among the other twenty-nine.

Choosing your GATE XH optional section
For XH, the optional section is fixed at the time of application. Several other sectioned GATE papers let you pick in the exam hall; XH does not. GATE 2027 registration has now closed, with the special registration window ending on 16 October 2026. If you registered, your section is decided, and your job is to prepare for it.
Planning for a later GATE instead? Start with your degree, since the section matching your major is nearly always right.
Next, read the admission notices of the programmes you want, because each institute decides which GATE papers and sections it accepts.
Finally, read the whole section syllabus rather than its title. Economics needs real comfort with calculus, matrices and econometrics. Psychology opens with a substantial statistics unit. Linguistics asks you to analyse sound systems and draw syntax trees from data.
How the GATE XH paper adds up
| Part | Questions or marks | Who takes it |
|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 10 questions, 15 marks | Every GATE candidate |
| XH0 Reasoning and Comprehension | 25 marks | Every XH candidate |
| Optional section (XH1 to XH6) | 60 marks | The one section you chose at application |
That is 65 questions and 100 marks in three hours, each worth 1 or 2 marks.
GATE asks three kinds of question. An MCQ has one right answer. An MSQ can have several, and you score only by selecting exactly the right set, with no partial credit. A NAT asks you to type a number; in XH this most often turns up in Economics or Psychology, for instance an elasticity, a multiplier, a correlation coefficient or a standard score.
Only MCQs carry a penalty: 1/3 of a mark for a wrong 1-mark question and 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark one.
On calculators, recent GATE exams have provided an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and have not permitted physical ones. The GATE 2027 information brochure will confirm the rule. Practise statistics on a virtual calculator anyway.
Where to start in each GATE XH section
Begin with the units your section leans on everywhere else. A workable order for each:
| Section | Start with | Then | Finish with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economics | Microeconomics; mathematical and statistical tools | Macroeconomics | International, public and development economics, with the Indian Economy running alongside |
| English | Literary forms; a chronological history of English literature | Critical theories | Translation, contemporary literary cultures, research methods |
| Linguistics | Fundamental concepts; phonetics | Phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics | Historical, social, typological and applied units |
| Philosophy | Logic (it helps XH0 as well) | Classical Indian and Western philosophy in parallel | Contemporary thinkers |
| Psychology | Research methods and statistics | Biological bases, perception, learning, cognition | Personality, social, developmental, clinical and applied units |
| Sociology | Classical theory; core concepts | Research methods; Indian society | The thematic units |

A 14-week GATE XH plan
Built around four focused hours a day for someone who studied the subject at college. Stretch it if you have less time.
| Weeks | Optional section | XH0 and General Aptitude |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Foundations: the first units in your section's study order above | Untimed reading comprehension and GA basics |
| 3–4 | Core theory units; make one-page notes per unit | Expression questions: sentence correction and rhetoric |
| 5–6 | Next block of core units; solve past-paper questions on everything done so far | Analytical reasoning sets |
| 7–8 | Remaining large units of your section | Logical reasoning: arguments, assumptions, conclusions |
| 9–10 | Smaller and newer units in the 2027 syllabus; revise weeks 1–4 | Timed mixed XH0 and GA sets |
| 11 | Revise weeks 5–10; past-paper questions by unit | Two timed XH0 sets |
| 12 | Full official past papers, timed | Analyse every reasoning error |
| 13 | Full-length mocks (3) and weak-unit repair | Daily short timed sets |
| 14 | Mocks (2 or 3), notes revision, rest | Light daily practice |
Names, schools and definitions slip away quickly in humanities subjects, so set aside one weekly session for older units.
Preparing for GATE XH alongside a degree or job
Two or three hours on weekdays, with more at weekends, will carry you through this plan in about six months.
Use weekdays for your optional section and weekends for past-paper questions plus one timed XH0 set. If this semester covers macroeconomics, research methods or critical theory, do those GATE units now while lectures reinforce them.
Above all, read something dense for twenty minutes every day, whether an editorial argument, a journal abstract or a philosophical essay, because XH0 rewards reading speed with comprehension and nothing builds that faster than a daily habit.
Strategy for XH0 and each optional section
XH0: Reasoning and Comprehension
Practise the four question types one at a time before you mix them, and in a comprehension passage pin down the author's main claim before you look at the options. In logical reasoning, train yourself to spot hidden assumptions, evidence that strengthens or weakens an argument, and conclusions that go further than the text allows. Critical reasoning material written for the GRE, GMAT or LSAT matches the official description of this section closely.
Economics (XH1)
Microeconomics and macroeconomics are the biggest units, so work the derivations on paper (the Slutsky equation, IS-LM equilibrium, the Solow steady state) until you can reproduce them without notes. Practise regression output, probability and constrained optimisation on the virtual calculator. For the Indian Economy, government sources such as the Economic Survey are the most reliable reading.
English (XH2)
Draw a timeline of English literature, period by period, with the major authors and works of each age set against it, and keep it beside you as you read. For theory, know each school's key thinkers, terms and texts, and practise applying a concept to an unseen passage. Indian poetics, translation studies, and research ethics and citation are all named in the 2027 syllabus; do not leave them out.
Linguistics (XH3)
Much of this section is problem-solving: transcribe in IPA, separate phonemes from allophones, segment morphemes and draw trees on real data sets. Learn theories by their central claims. The applied unit covers computational linguistics, including large language models, so understand the basic ideas.
Philosophy (XH4)
Turn the syllabus into a table with three columns for thinker or school, key concepts and core argument, and keep all the Sanskrit terms you meet in one running glossary. Drill logic until syllogisms, the square of opposition and truth tables are routine.
Psychology (XH5)
Research methods and statistics sit under the whole section, so know which test, correlation or design fits which situation. For learning, intelligence, personality and motivation, learn each theorist's model and vocabulary. Clinical and organisational psychology name specific therapies and leadership theories; comparison tables help.
Sociology (XH6)
Know the classical thinkers thoroughly, with concepts and principal works. For Indian sociology, connect each perspective to its scholars, as the syllabus does with Ghurye, Srinivas, Desai and Guha.
General Aptitude
The verbal part will feel natural. The quantitative and spatial parts may not, after years away from mathematics, so begin early with arithmetic, percentages, data interpretation and paper-folding problems.
GATE XH past papers and the change in section codes
IIT Guwahati keeps recent papers and answer keys on the official GATE 2026 download page.
Watch the codes. In 2026, Reasoning and Comprehension was B1 and the optional sections were C1 to C6 (Economics, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology). For 2027 they are XH0 to XH6.
Solve XH0 questions from every year available, since they are the most reusable practice you have. Work your own section unit by unit first, and keep full timed papers for the last month. Check against the official key, log every error, and redo those questions a week later.
Statistics graduates considering a second paper should note that ST is the only one allowed with XH; the GATE ST preparation guide explains what that paper involves.
Timed practice and exam-day order for GATE XH
Sit five or six full timed papers over the last five weeks, at the same time of day as your exam.
In the exam, take General Aptitude first and bank its 15 marks. Move to XH0 next; if one long passage starts swallowing time, flag it and come back. Then turn to your optional section, answering what you know before attempting the harder questions on a second pass.
Only guess an MCQ once two options are eliminated. With MSQs, tick only the options you are sure of, since one wrong choice voids the question. A NAT has no penalty, so always enter a value you have worked out.
Books for each GATE XH section
Start from your degree textbooks.
| Section | Widely used texts |
|---|---|
| Economics | Hal R. Varian, Intermediate Microeconomics; N. Gregory Mankiw, Macroeconomics; Damodar N. Gujarati, Basic Econometrics; Alpha C. Chiang, Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics; Paul Krugman and Maurice Obstfeld, International Economics; Debraj Ray, Development Economics |

| Linguistics | Victoria Fromkin, Robert Rodman and Nina Hyams, An Introduction to Language; Peter Ladefoged, A Course in Phonetics; Ronald Wardhaugh, An Introduction to Sociolinguistics; Lyle Campbell, Historical Linguistics: An Introduction |
| Philosophy | M. Hiriyanna, Outlines of Indian Philosophy; S. Chatterjee and D. Datta, An Introduction to Indian Philosophy; Frank Thilly, A History of Philosophy; Irving M. Copi, Introduction to Logic |
| Psychology | Anne Anastasi and Susana Urbina, Psychological Testing; John W. Creswell, Research Design; Calvin S. Hall and Gardner Lindzey, Theories of Personality |
| Sociology | Anthony Giddens, Sociology; George Ritzer, Sociological Theory; Lewis A. Coser, Masters of Sociological Thought; M. N. Srinivas, Social Change in Modern India |

Common GATE XH mistakes
XH0 looks easy, so people skip practising it. It is 25 marks of close reasoning, identical for every XH candidate, and careless reading costs more there than anywhere else.
The quantitative half of General Aptitude gets neglected too, even though arithmetic and data interpretation need steady practice if you last did them at school.
Some candidates revise from an older syllabus. The 2027 sections name specific units and thinkers, so work from the 2027 PDF.
Others guess MSQs, where one wrong tick loses the question.
Your last month before GATE XH
Close the syllabus about four weeks out.
Each week, sit two full timed papers and spend at least as long analysing your answers as you spent writing them, paying most attention to reasoning slips. Every day, do a short XH0 set and a General Aptitude set. Work back through your error log, and reread your one-page notes on thinkers and concepts, theories and their vocabulary, and any statistics formulas your section needs.
In the final week, keep regular sleep and match your study hours to your exam session.
After GATE XH: using your score
Your GATE 2027 score remains valid for three years from the date the result is announced.
Its main use for XH candidates is postgraduate and PhD admission. Every institute decides which GATE papers it accepts for each programme, so read the admission notice of each one you target. COAP (for IIT M.Tech offers) and CCMT (for NITs and IIITs) are the centralised M.Tech routes; for humanities and social science programmes, expect to apply through each institute's own process.
Some public sector organisations use GATE scores in recruitment and list accepted papers in their own notifications.
You can compare XH with other papers through our GATE preparation guides.
