What GATE MN covers
MN is the Mining Engineering paper. Its syllabus tracks a four-year mining degree closely, from rocks and minerals at the start to mine valuation and operations research at the end, with strata control, ventilation and safety in between.
It is a small, specialised paper, so a graduate who revises all six sections honestly is in a strong position.
MN also stands alone in the two-paper rules. In the official GATE 2027 combination table, no second paper is listed for MN as the primary paper. IIT Madras says further combinations may be opened later and would be announced on the GATE 2027 website. Until then, plan for MN as your only paper. You can still browse all 30 GATE papers to see how other branches are organised.

Inside the GATE MN question paper
You get 65 questions in three hours, each worth 1 or 2 marks, for 100 in all. Ten are General Aptitude, worth 15 marks. The remaining 55 carry 85 marks, and 13 of those are Engineering Mathematics set specifically for MN. Mining subjects take the last 72.
| Format | What you do | Wrong answer |
|---|---|---|
| MCQ | Pick the one correct option | Minus 1/3 (1-mark) or 2/3 (2-mark) |
| MSQ | Pick every correct option; no partial credit | No deduction |
| NAT | Type a numerical value | No deduction |
In MN, a NAT is typically something like the airflow through two airways in parallel, the safety factor of a coal pillar, a reduced level from a levelling sheet or the net present value of a small project. MCQs and MSQs carry most of the recall load, such as which stoping method suits a steep, narrow orebody.
As for calculators, recent GATE exams have offered an on-screen virtual scientific calculator and kept physical ones out. The GATE 2027 information brochure will settle the rules for this year. Practise ventilation and economics numericals on a virtual calculator regardless, because compound-interest powers are clumsy on a mouse-driven keypad.
A sensible order for GATE MN subjects
Begin with two foundations. Engineering Mathematics is a fixed 13 marks and feeds geostatistics and reliability; Engineering Mechanics sits under ground control and machinery.
Read Mining Geology before Geomechanics. Rock types, joints, folds and faults are what rock mass classification and slope stability are describing. Geomechanics then leads straight into Ground Control, since stress around an opening is the reason a pillar or a support has to be designed at all.
Pair Mine Development with Mining Methods. Ventilation pairs with Underground Hazards in the same way: you cannot reason about methane layering or a fire behind a stopping without knowing how air is moving.
Surveying is self-contained, so run it on the side.
Keep Mineral Economics, Mine Planning and Systems Engineering for last. They borrow statistics and linear programming, and they go quickly once that mathematics is recent.
Add short aptitude sets a few times a week.
Fourteen weeks to GATE MN 2027
Built for four to five focused hours a day after a mining degree. Short on time? Stretch each block and keep the order.
| Weeks | Focus | Finish the block with |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Linear algebra, calculus, vector calculus; Engineering Mechanics | Past-paper questions on equilibrium, friction and trusses |
| 2 | Differential equations, probability and statistics, numerical methods | A timed mathematics test |
| 3 | Mining Geology: minerals, rocks, ore genesis, structural geology | Short recall questions until error-free |
| 4 | Geomechanics: rock properties, classification, failure theories, in-situ stress | Rock mechanics numericals from recent papers |
| 5 | Ground Control: stress around openings, pillars, supports, filling, subsidence, slopes and dumps | Pillar and slope stability questions |
| 6 | Mine Development: drivages, drilling, explosives, blast design, ground vibration | Blast design numericals |
| 7 | Mine Surveying | Levelling, traverse and curve questions |
| 8 | Mining Methods: surface, coal and metal mining | Method-selection and layout questions |
| 9 | Mining Machinery: power, ropes, haulage, conveyors, hoisting, pumps, comminution | Hoisting, conveyor and pump numericals |
| 10 | Mine Ventilation | Airflow, fan and network questions |
| 11 | Underground Hazards and Surface Environment, including legislation | A mixed recall test on gases, fires, dust and pollution |
| 12 | Mineral Economics, Mine Planning, Systems Engineering | DCF, cut-off grade, LP and reliability questions |
| 13 | Full-length mocks (3) and weak-topic repair | An error log sorted by subject |
| 14 | Mocks (3), formula sheets, light revision | A calm final week |
From week 3, set aside one session weekly to revisit old blocks. A rock mass rating you forgot in week 4 will hurt you when a week 10 question asks about roof support.
Studying for GATE MN while at college or at a mine
Plenty of MN candidates are either final-year students juggling vocational training and a project, or graduates already on a mine site. If two or three hours on weekdays is all you have, spread the plan over about six months.
Weeknights suit a single subject; weekends suit mixed official questions.
If you are working underground or in an opencast pit, use it. Walk the ventilation circuit with the syllabus in mind. Notice where stoppings and regulators sit, how the support plan changes near a fault, how the blast pattern on a bench is laid out and why the haul road has the gradient it has.
Students have an advantage too: write up what you saw on mine visits and training, since recall questions draw on exactly that.
How to prepare each GATE MN subject
Engineering Mathematics
Eigenvalues, rank, ODEs and probability are reliable marks. Spend a little extra on statistics, because hypothesis testing, distributions and regression return in geostatistics and safety data analysis.
Mining Geology
Mostly recall. Identification of common minerals and rocks, ore-forming processes, and folds, faults and joints. Keep compact tables and reread them weekly.
Mine Development
Learn the access choices (shaft, incline, adit) and when each fits, the drivage cycle, drilling machines, and properties of explosives and initiation systems. Blast design numericals (burden, spacing, charge per hole, powder factor) and the factors behind ground vibration are worth practising until they are quick.
Mine Surveying
Formula-heavy and very scoreable. Levelling with curvature and refraction corrections, tacheometric distance and elevation, triangulation, error adjustment, setting out curves, contouring and correlating surface and underground surveys.
Engineering Mechanics
Start every problem with a clean free-body diagram, because equilibrium, trusses, friction on inclines and beam bending appear both on their own and hidden inside haulage and support questions.
Geomechanics
Uniaxial and triaxial strength tests, rock mass classification, Mohr-Coulomb and other failure criteria, and in-situ stress measurement. Know the stress concentration around circular and rectangular openings properly, together with the basics of subsidence and of slope and dump stability.
Ground Control
Pillar strength formulas, tributary area loading and safety factor, support design, filling methods and strata behaviour around a longwall face. Most of this becomes routine after twenty or thirty worked problems.
Mining Methods
Compare instead of memorising methods one at a time. Why longwall over bord and pillar for a given seam? Which stoping method suits a weak hanging wall? How do haul road design, loading and continuous systems fit a surface layout?
Mining Machinery
Calculation questions cluster around wire ropes, haulage, conveyors and hoisting: rope tension, power needed, capacity. Add pumps, comminution and the basics of rock cutting.
Mine Ventilation
Probably the most numerical subject in MN. Atkinson's equation, airway resistances in series and parallel, natural ventilation pressure, fan curves and operating points, heat load and simple network solving. No shortcut exists; solve a large number of problems.
Underground Hazards and Surface Environment
Gas properties and detection, methane drainage, fires and explosions, dust, inundation, rescue, safety management plans and legislation, then pollution standards, reclamation and EIA. Flashcards suit this material well.
Mineral Economics, Mine Planning and Systems Engineering
DCF, NPV and mine valuation; reserve estimation and basic geostatistics; cut-off grade, ultimate pit and equipment selection. Systems engineering adds reliability, LP, transportation and assignment, network analysis, inventory and queuing.
General Aptitude
Fifteen marks in about twenty minutes. Timed sets, a few times a week.
Using official GATE MN past papers
Recent papers and answer keys are on the official GATE 2026 download page, run by IIT Guwahati.
Work them subject by subject as you finish each block of the plan, then in the last month switch to complete papers under a three-hour limit, marked against the official key.
Your error log matters more than your score on any one paper. For every miss, note the topic and the cause: a concept gap, a formula slip, a unit error or a misread question. Redo those items a week later. If a 2027 topic hardly ever appears in old papers, study it from the textbook anyway.
Mocks and time management in GATE MN
Sit six to eight full mocks in the final five weeks, at the time of day your session runs. Past MN papers taken under strict conditions make perfectly good mocks.
In the hall, begin with General Aptitude and finish it in roughly twenty minutes. Then go through the recall questions on geology, methods, hazards, legislation and environment, which either you know or you do not. A second sweep handles the numericals you can set up confidently: a ventilation network, a level book, a pillar load, a hoist, a DCF table or a reliability block diagram. Flag long calculations for the end.
Only guess an MCQ after ruling out two options. MSQs and NATs carry no penalty, so always submit an answer you have worked through. Check units and decimal places before you enter any NAT.

Mistakes that cost GATE MN marks
Recall subjects get neglected because they feel easy, yet geology, hazards, legislation and environment turn up in every paper and fade quickly without repeated revision.
Ventilation is the opposite problem. Reading Atkinson's equation is easy; solving a three-airway network under time pressure is not.
Units cause steady losses in surveying, ventilation pressure and hoisting work. Pascals against millimetres of water gauge is a classic trap.
Leaving Engineering Mathematics to the last fortnight throws away 13 of the easiest marks.
An MSQ guess is rarely worth it, because one wrong option voids the answer.
The last month before GATE MN
New topics stop about four weeks before the exam.
Take two or three full mocks a week, give the analysis as much time as the paper itself, and keep working on your error log until nothing in it trips you up. Read single-page formula sheets for surveying, ventilation, ground control, machinery and economics daily.
Rotate quick recall sessions through geology tables, gas properties, legislation, pollution standards and rescue procedure. Keep a timed aptitude set in every day. During the final week, fix your sleep and match your study hours to your exam session.
After GATE MN: higher studies and recruitment
Your GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced, which gives you more than one admission cycle to use it.
For M.Tech, IITs issue offers through COAP. NITs, IIITs and many other institutes fill seats through CCMT. MS by research and PhD admissions at IISc and several IITs are handled by the institutes themselves.
Some public sector organisations also shortlist using GATE scores. Each one publishes its own notification with the papers it accepts and its selection steps, so read those carefully rather than relying on hearsay.
Other branches are covered in our GATE preparation guides if you want to compare how their papers are put together.
