What is GATE AG?

AG is GATE's Agricultural Engineering paper. If your B.Tech had farm machinery workshops, a soil and water conservation lab and a post-harvest technology course, this is your paper. Its score counts for M.Tech, MS and PhD admission at the IITs, IISc, NITs and other institutes, and some public sector organisations look at GATE scores when they recruit.

AG is unusually spread out. One question may ask for the effective field capacity of a seed drill, the next for a unit hydrograph ordinate, and the one after that for the time to dry paddy from 22% to 14% moisture. Students who come from a single specialisation feel the gaps quickly.

How the GATE AG paper is marked

Each of the 65 questions is worth 1 or 2 marks. Ten General Aptitude questions account for 15. Engineering Mathematics written for AG takes 13 of the 85 subject marks, and the six agricultural engineering sections share the remaining 72. IIT Madras does not publish how those 72 are divided.

Questions come in three forms. MCQs have exactly one right option. MSQs can have more than one, and only the complete correct set earns marks. NATs ask for a number typed into a box.

Only MCQs carry a penalty: lose 1/3 of a mark for a wrong 1-mark answer, 2/3 for a wrong 2-mark answer.

Recent GATE exams gave candidates an on-screen scientific calculator and kept physical ones out; the GATE 2027 information brochure will confirm this year's rules. AG is full of short sums, so get used to the virtual one early.

Where to begin with GATE AG

Think of the paper as three tracks resting on shared foundations, and lay the foundations first.

Engineering Mathematics opens the plan and never stops; its statistics also turn up inside hydrology problems.

For the water track, fluid mechanics comes before anything else. Pipe flow, weirs and open channels sit underneath irrigation conveyance, drainage, wells and pumps. Hydrology and soil mechanics follow, and only then erosion, watershed management, irrigation and drainage.

On the machinery track, IC engine thermodynamics has to precede tractors, since transmission and drawbar calculations assume you can already find brake power. Gears, belts and chains from machine design pair well with farm implements.

The processing track rests on heat and mass transfer plus psychrometry. Drying, evaporation, pasteurisation and freezing all lean on them.

Surveying and storage are short and descriptive. Slot them into tired evenings. Aptitude starts in week one, half an hour a few days a week.

A 14-week GATE AG timetable

Built for four or five focused hours a day. Less time means longer blocks in the same sequence.

Weeks Focus Finish the block with
1 Linear algebra, calculus, vector calculus Standard question types timed
2 Fluid Mechanics; differential equations Pipe flow, weir and open channel numericals
3 Hydrology; probability and statistics Unit hydrograph and runoff questions
4 Soil Mechanics; numerical methods Consolidation, compaction and seepage questions
5 Soil and water erosion, watershed management, surveying Soil loss and contour bund questions
6 Soil-water-plant relationship and irrigation methods Irrigation efficiency and scheduling numericals
7 Drainage, groundwater hydrology, wells and pumps Well discharge and pump power questions
8 Sources of power; IC engines Engine power and fuel consumption questions
9 Tractors and power tillers; traction Gear ratio, drawbar power and hitch questions
10 Machine design elements and farm machinery Field capacity and cost analysis questions
11 Engineering properties, drying, evaporation, psychrometry Drying rate and chart-reading questions
12 Size reduction, material handling, storage; heat and mass transfer, food preservation A timed mixed test
13 Full-length mocks (3) and weak-topic repair Your error log, sorted by section
14 Mocks (3), formula sheets, light revision A calm last week

Water subjects come first because they form the largest block and each one feeds the next, and from week 3 you should reserve one session a week for whatever you studied a month earlier.

Fitting GATE AG around college or work

With two or three hours on weekdays, stretch the timetable to roughly 24 to 28 weeks.

Use your coursework. If this semester has tractor systems or drainage design, study those GATE topics while the lectures run.

Give weekdays to one subject and weekends to mixed past-paper questions from all three tracks, since switching between a hydrograph and a thresher is exactly what the real paper demands.

Subject-wise strategy for GATE AG

Engineering Mathematics

Complex variables are absent from the AG list, so spend the time on what is listed: eigenvalues, partial derivatives and Euler's theorem, Green's, Stokes and Gauss theorems, ODEs with Laplace transforms, distributions and regression, and the trapezoidal and Simpson's rules. Two or three minutes per question is the target.

Farm Machinery

Know how each implement works, from ploughs to seed drills, sprayers and combines. The numbers revolve around performance: theoretical and effective field capacity, field efficiency, seed and fertilizer rates, and the fixed and variable costs of owning a machine. Machine design adds speed ratios and power transmitted by belts, chains and gears.

Farm Power

Treat the engine as applied thermodynamics: air-standard cycles, indicated and brake power, mechanical and thermal efficiency, specific fuel consumption and heat balance. Tractor problems need gear trains and the differential, traction and drawbar power, weight transfer and stability, and three-point hitch geometry.

Soil and Water Conservation Engineering

No AG section lists more subjects. Fluid and soil mechanics give classic numericals; watch gauge versus absolute pressure and the units in Darcy's law. Hydrology wants rainfall averaging by Thiessen polygons, runoff estimation, unit hydrograph derivation and routing. For erosion, practise soil loss estimation and the sizing of bunds, terraces and spillways.

Irrigation and Drainage Engineering

Crop water requirement, evapotranspiration and scheduling are calculation work. Add design and efficiency of surface, sprinkler and drip systems, drainage coefficient and drain spacing, leaching requirement, and steady flow to wells in confined and unconfined aquifers. Pump curves and selection send you back to fluid mechanics.

Agricultural Process Engineering

Start with engineering properties, then drying: moisture on wet and dry basis, constant and falling rate periods, and reading the psychrometric chart. Rittinger's, Kick's and Bond's laws, screen effectiveness and conveyor capacity are reliable short numericals.

Dairy and Food Engineering

Conduction through slabs and cylinders, heat exchanger analysis and material and energy balances form the core. Then microbial death kinetics with D-value, z-value and process time, milk pasteurisation and sterilisation, freezing and refrigeration, water activity and sorption isotherms.

General Aptitude

Fifteen marks in about twenty minutes. Timed sets keep it sharp.

GATE AG past papers and how to work through them

Earlier official papers show you how AG actually words its questions. Recent AG papers and keys are in the official GATE 2026 archive, maintained by IIT Guwahati.

As each block of the timetable ends, pull that subject's questions from several years and solve them together. In the final month, switch to complete papers under a three-hour limit.

Mark against the official key and note why each miss happened: concept gap, wrong formula, a hectare and square-metre mix-up, a misread question. Redo it a week later.

GATE AG mocks and exam-day order

Plan six to eight full mocks across the last five weeks, written at the time of day your paper is scheduled.

A sequence that suits AG:

  1. Aptitude, about twenty minutes.
  2. One-line conceptual questions on implements, power sources, storage structures and processing equipment.
  3. Numericals you can set up immediately: hydrographs, irrigation depth, engine power, drying.
  4. Long multi-step problems, such as a full drain-spacing or heat exchanger calculation, in the time left.

Wrong MCQs cost marks, so guess only once two options are gone. MSQs and NATs are penalty-free; enter every answer you have worked out. Read the unit in each NAT carefully, because the answer box will not tell you if it expected hectares and you typed square metres.

Free NPTEL courses by IIT and IISc faculty cover many of these subjects and pair well with the books.

Fluid mechanics, soil mechanics, hydrology and surveying in this list are also core Civil Engineering material. That overlap is why CE is the second paper GATE allows with AG; the GATE CE preparation guide covers those subjects at civil-engineering depth.

Mistakes that cost GATE AG marks

Students often prepare only the track they enjoyed in college, so the machinery person skips food engineering and the water person skips tractors, yet all seven sections are examined.

Farm machinery gets treated as theory. Its field capacity, efficiency and cost questions need as much practice as a hydrograph.

Drying problems go wrong when wet-basis and dry-basis moisture are mixed. Convert first, every time.

Irrigation and hydrology answers suffer from unit slips between hectares, cubic metres and millimetres of water depth.

Engineering Mathematics left to January is 13 marks thrown away. Random MSQ guesses lose too, since one wrong tick voids the answer.

The final month before GATE AG

About four weeks out, stop opening new topics.

Two or three full mocks a week is plenty, provided each gets an equal stretch of analysis afterwards and you clear your mistakes notebook question by question.

Write a one-page sheet per section. Hydrology, irrigation, engines and tractors, drying and thermal processing benefit most, because their formulas are easy to half-learn, such as Thiem's well equation, drawbar power, the wet-to-dry basis conversion, F-value and D-value relations.

Do a timed aptitude set every day. In the last week, fix your sleep to match your session.

After GATE AG: higher studies and jobs

A valid AG score opens M.Tech, MS by research and PhD applications in farm machinery and power, soil and water engineering, and processing and food engineering. IIT M.Tech offers run through COAP, while NITs, IIITs and many other institutes use CCMT. IISc and several IITs hold their own MS and PhD rounds.

Some public sector organisations recruit using GATE scores and list the papers they accept in their own notifications, which you should read before applying.

Your GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced. That gives you room to work for a year or two and still apply with it.
