GATE DA 2025 Q55: Nearest-mean classifier: is the decision function linear?

Question

Consider a two-class problem in Rd\mathbb{R}^d with class labels red and green. Let μred\mu_{red} and μgreen\mu_{green} be the means of the two classes. Given test sample x∈Rdx \in \mathbb{R}^d, a classifier calculates the squared Euclidean distance (denoted by ∥⋅∥2\lVert \cdot \rVert^2) between xx and the means of the two classes and assigns the class label that the sample xx is closest to. That is, the classifier computes

f(x)=∥μred−x∥2−∥μgreen−x∥2f(x) = \lVert \mu_{red} - x \rVert^2 - \lVert \mu_{green} - x \rVert^2

and assigns the label red to xx if f(x)<0f(x) < 0, and green otherwise. Which of the following statements is/are correct?

Answer: B, C (official GATE 2025 final answer key)

Concept used: Expanding squared distances: the ∥x∥2\lVert x \rVert^2 terms cancel.

First step: Expand both squared norms: f(x)=∥μred∥2−∥μgreen∥2−2(μred−μgreen)⊤xf(x) = \lVert \mu_{red} \rVert^2 - \lVert \mu_{green} \rVert^2 - 2(\mu_{red} - \mu_{green})^{\top}x.
