GATE CSE 2025 Session 1 Q44: Regularity of αβα languages over {a, b}

Question

Consider the following two languages over the alphabet {a,b}\{a, b\}:

L1={ αβα∣α∈{a,b}+ AND β∈{a,b}+ }L_1 = \{\, \alpha\beta\alpha \mid \alpha \in \{a, b\}^+ \text{ AND } \beta \in \{a, b\}^+ \,\}

L2={ αβα∣α∈{a}+ AND β∈{a,b}+ }L_2 = \{\, \alpha\beta\alpha \mid \alpha \in \{a\}^+ \text{ AND } \beta \in \{a, b\}^+ \,\}

Answer: C (official GATE 2025 final answer key)

Concept used: A finite automaton can remember a bounded amount of information: a repeated block of a's can be shrunk to one aa, but an arbitrary repeated string cannot.

First step: For L2L_2, every akβaka^k \beta a^k equals a(ak−1βak−1)aa(a^{k-1}\beta a^{k-1})a, so L2=a(a+b)+aL_2 = a(a+b)^+a. For L1L_1 the repeat cannot be shrunk: with α=ab\alpha = ab, β=a\beta = a the string abaababaab starts with aa but ends with bb, so the automaton would have to remember a whole prefix; apply the pumping lemma to anb a anba^n b\, a\, a^n b.
