GATE CSE 2024 Session 2 Q25: Events that always move the running process out of running
- Operating System
- 1 mark
- MSQ
- No negative marking
Question
Consider a process P running on a CPU. Which one or more of the following events will always trigger a context switch by the OS that results in process P moving to a non-running state (e.g., ready, blocked)?
Try it: multiple select: one or more correct options
Show answer and explanation
Answer: A, B (official GATE 2024 final answer key)
Concept used: A process must leave the running state when it has to wait for I/O; interrupts are handled and may return to it.
First step: For each event ask whether P itself must wait for a disk operation, or whether the OS may simply resume P after handling it.
